How and why Varus' new story could have been just as good as his old one
No one cares about Varus' wife and kids. They care about what they represent to Varus, and how it drove his identity as "The Arrow of Retribution".
Now, the thing with Kai and Val is that there is no driving force. Val is driven to vengeance, but it's over Kai, who is right there telling him he shouldn't. If it was emphasized that the only reason Kai even persists within Varus was because it was a contract of sorts between Varus and Val, (Varus gets to use val's body, Kai stays within the amalgam) then it would make more sense and make him a more tragic character, not only being told to give in to vengeance, but forced to, in order to keep Varus from "expelling" Kai. Instead we get the opposite emphasis; that Kai is fine, that there's no reason Val should seek vengeance, and that seeking vengeance will ultimately cause him to lose himself and his ability to interact with Kai, which directly goes against his voice line "Fear a man with nothing to lose." The thing about doing it this way is that it's already implied, but only vaguely. You could have kept the fear of Val giving in to vengeance too much perfectly intact as well; Val must serve as Varus' vessel for Kai's sake, but can't give in to him completely, and is helped to resist by Kai. He seeks vengeance for Kai's sake but does not want to lose himself to it.
The way the current story is, Val (and Kai, if he has any influence whatsoever) have no driving force. He wants to go home and become a pacifist. You don't empathize with Varus' motives as a vengeful killer, but instead hate Varus for being a generic bad guy and only get to empathize with Val and Kai, who are stuck trying to stop him, but too wimpy to do so. (Kayn is shown to be able to after all) which is a pretty mediocre "gameplay fantasy", since you're controlling Varus, not Val and Kai. Varus the darkin only seems to be vengeful because he was sealed away for killing everyone.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, a follow-up comic that re-establishes Varus' sympathetic motives by showing these dynamics and/or hiring me for your writing department would be a good idea.
