Diana In leather pants and Leona the Deatheater
The Title is a reference to the tropes Draco in leather pants and Ron the Death Eater. This is because I wanted to discuss something that you may have noticed in the Targon lore.
In the original Lore, the Solari were a religion that had values based around compassion, honor, and defending life. It fit with Leona's then characterization, and they where of little note until Diana came into being. Noting overtly of the Solari was changed, but Diana had uncovered evidence of a cult who worshiped the moon called the Lunari. Digging further, this time in a more literal sense, she found her armor and her sword.
She eagerly presented this to the Solari elders, but they seemingly already knew... something about the Lunari, and then proceeded to both torture (Ironstylus did an art piece were it was shown that the marks around her eyes were burns caused by her tears boiling and that the Lunari Symbol was burned into her, which I personally take as canon to the original) and then execute her. She cried out to the moon, and the Moon answered, giving her the powers she now has and with them she killed the Elders,
Now, Diana here was a great character, and it had great implications for Targon as a whole; The Solari, a religion based on the virtues of compassion may have committed a genocide and have it's leaders hiding something. Diana had a tragic and bloody origin, this made Diana a vengeful, bitter woman with a vendetta against the Solari. She had plans of rebuilding the Lunari and returning the favor to those who had destroyed them.
Diana had, in many was, become just as bad as those who had harmed her. While she is sympathetic and her revenge does feel justified, in the end she became a zealous, spiteful person. Only she knows the truth, and she would have likely gotten converts for the New Lunari. A perfect foil to her solar counterpart, she was a very compelling villain and character.
Leona and the Solari, by contrast, were an interesting faction. Leona went against her culture, but knew why it was that way. She was okay with dying for her beliefs, but was saved by being the chosen of the sun. The Solari helped train her in her powers, and she planned to use their influence to find a way to end the practices that she found cruel.
Now, things are a little different. The Solari/Lunari conflict seems to have been dropped (It's still there, but it's not the main focus of Targon). However, in it's transition, Diana and Leona have changed. Diana was not tortured, but in a fit of anger (and possibly the influence of the moon aspect) she murdered the elders during her hearing. Leona had become the Solari's attack dog, and was going to execute Diana herself. She went up the mountain out of raw hatred for Diana, only having a change of heart through her aspect.
Personally, Diana doesn't come across as too sympathetic in this version. Sure she seems normal, but because she "shot first" it loses it's teeth. Heck it's even implied that she didn't want to kill them. All the scene does in this version makes me think that the Moon aspect controlled her and seemed to want the Solari to die. (Perhaps to start off Leona on her journey?)
Now, We all know the whole "Leona is a monster" thing... and I have had many discussions with people on the subject. There seems to be a universal opinion that Leona was not good at the start. However, many people share hope that she will get better from here on. I am not sure if I agree with them or not, but I'd rather focus on what we currently have.
I frequent Tv tropes, it's a great site and i learn a lot about writing and how to work with tropes. Those two tropes that I linked are common in fanfiction, bad ones mostly. I feel that Diana has become too innocent in her actions against the Solari, and Leona too dark in her actions. I also feel that Diana lost a lot of her depth, and that both lores do not capture the feel of the originals.
What do you guys think?
were justified. But with
? It's just like you said. They wanted to be the grey vs gray, and only got to reverse the roles of good vs evil.
