I kinda get it, but why did the painter go to Vlad? Did she die? What was the ending about like can anyone just give me a summary of what happened in the story cuz it's really good but i just don't get it.
Vladimir commissioned Maura to paint him. She got more than she bargained for.
We don't know if she died - in fact it's quite plausible that she's our next champion if she survived.
Maura went to Vlad initially so she could outdo her colleagues. The more she talked to him, and the more he messed around with her mind, the more she fell under his spell, until he eventually convinced her to join him in pursuit of immortality.
I believe the story is supposed to be open-ended, but there's really only one way it could go. If you know your vampire novels, you'll know they have significant sexual overtones, which leads me to the conclusion that the story is more of a representation of Vladimir's depravity and hedonism than his appreciation for talented people like Maura.
The only thing I had questions about was why on earth is Vlad actually interested in getting back into the public eye now?
It's a detail that he opposes the Trifarix doctrine, but we don't know why he cares just that he does.
