I'm just going to get right into it. Feel free to discuss anything I mention or maybe something I left out. Thanks for reading.

General Feelings I think the quality of writing ranges from "meh" to "good" so not too many complaints. Someone on another post mentioned something about Karma's in particular, how instead of showing us she destroyed a boat, it just says "she destroyed a boat". That's pretty weak and details could have given a lot more insight into the character(s?). Other than that, the general culture details they added, the art, and pretty much everything about purely Ionia itself really fleshed out the world and is really cool. It still feels like Ionia, but now we have a better understanding of their wide and varied cultures. A definite plus with this lore update. And kudos to them for keeping the "balance" motif AND the fact that Ionia has no standing army.

Irelia This was the big one that everyone was expecting. And honestly...a lot has changed, but at the same time not really. I guess the changes feel right for the character: she still "takes up arms" she still "frees major important Ionian place" and she's still one of the harder-nosed Ionian Champions. She's the rigidity to Karma's flexibility. I like the change to her start as a "traditional dancer" (shows the big change from tradition to violent uprising), I like that her blades are her broken family crest and I like the internal conflict they've added to her.

I was disappointed that her father and her brother (now multiple brothers) were reduced to little more than tragic backstory; that was something I really liked about old Irelia was the importance of her family. Its not that her family is unimportant now, just that before they had names and felt real, whereas now they just feel like a way to add tragedy/motivation to Irelia's character. Wouldn't it have made more sense to just change her family's "blade style" into the "dance style" she goes off to study? Like, her father and brothers could have also studied it? I don't know, feels like they went from important driving characters to generic important driving force. Still important, just in a nameless, generic way. Here's hoping that Zelos returns someday in some form.

Lee Sin I don't really like the direction they've taken with Lee Sin. Its a fine direction, I don't think its an insult to his character or anything, but I just don't agree with it. Formerly, Lee Sin peacefully protested the Noxian occupation, setting himself on fire and staying that way until the League of Legends allowed Ionia a rematch, gaining the win and freeing the provinces that were occupied. That's how he became blind, peacefully, and by complete choice. Now, he becomes blind by using a power that is way too strong. Its still somewhat by choice, but I think its fundamentally different than before. Lee Sin always struck me as this character that believed in finding the peaceful solution at all costs, but having the skills to fight when it came down to it. The sort of Mr. Miyagi-type character, "don't fight for the sake of fighting, only to protect others and better yourself" type of deal.

Now, in his short story, Lee gives these bandits ONE warning, they think he's a freaking blind man so of course think they can take him, and then he brutally murders them. In my mind, Lee would have discussed with the bandits, try and help guide them to the right path, and when that didn't work, beat them up and send them packing. Not MURDER them. At one point, the main bandit is like "Take it back! I give up!" and Lee is like "Too late DEAD" and uses Dragon Kick on him. Over a bunch of treasure and material goods. Just feels wrong.

They kept his history as an arrogant, very naturally talented guy who learns humility through a horrible, irreversible mistake, and eventually this is what makes him powerful and puts him on the path to wisdom. Its what allowed him to help Udyr, who's now placed in an odd spot in the bio by the way. Lee Sin hasn't even worked through his own crap by the time he meets Udyr and realizes he needed his help. He's not even blind yet. Anyways, I digress, the bio is fine and feels like a Lee Sin story, the short story just threw me off though.

Karma Ugh, where do I even begin? Karma has been changed into this Dalai Lama/Avatar type entity that is a title that is continually reborn and utilizes all past experience/identities...why? This type of character can work just fine--Aang is great, Avatar the Last Airbender is one of my favorite shows of all time--but I felt it missed the mark for several reasons. For one, the girl who turns out to be Karma, Darha, has the Pantheon problem: not as bad as ole Atreus, but basically you sympathize with Darha and she, at least in part, loses control of the "body" and Karma takes over.

And that brings me to another point. Riot has this newfound obsession with multiple people in a body. This is a cornerstone for Kalista's character, we also have elements of this in the Targonian Aspects, there's the Varus catastrophe and now Karma. Its an interesting story element, but we really don't need it multiple times like this.

I would have much preferred they stick closer to Karma's original (well, her last lore) bio. Karma was a character all about compromise, about being willing to use both war and peace, traditions and new ideas, for the good of Ionia. "I have seen two paths and made another between". She doesn't accept that there are only a certain number of options. By all means, give her some internal conflict for using the "war" path. But I she doesn't need a thousand voices in her head in order to have that conflict. Internal conflict comes from within an individual, that's the whole point.

If we're going to have a character represent Ionia's religious side of things, Riot already has a perfectly good one with Soraka. A demi-god that got punished for using her powers for violent means. We don't need Karma/Darha going through the same arc.

Yasuo & Riven I combined these two mostly because I really don't have much to say about them. They both didn't change much, received some added details to flesh them out, that's about it. I like the bios we got.

Yasuo's story is pretty much identical, again with plenty of added details. They also added mention of Taliyah, though its pretty brief.

Riven's story, again, is similar to her old. I was hoping they'd include more of Riven's patriotism, how, while she's disenchanted with Noxus, she still believes it can be a great nation. Even as she exiles herself, I always figured she longed to go back to Noxus; she's something of idealist, having a specific idea of the Noxian way and the whole "chemical warfare" thing was not a part of that plan. Noxus grew by offering other nations a place in their Empire of the Strong, and Ionians had obviously proven themselves strong. But this is mostly just me nitpicking, I do hope to see something of this in future Riven stories though.

Conclusion That's the long of it. Overall, nothing outright awful, on the whole very few fundamental changes. There were a few things I outright dislike (the Lee Sin brutality and most of Karma's bio) but the others are well-written and serve the characters needs perfectly.

Thanks for reading, again, please comment with your own thoughts. I know there's a big Karma thread going, but feel free to mention those concerns/lack of concerns here. I'd like to hear more thoughts on the other Champs as well. Keep it friendly :) [sg-ahri-2]

Like you, i'm really bummed they decided to remove Riven's patriotism. I feel her lacking that is something that really removes a huge portion of character depth. What i sincerely hope is that they merely decided to "Turn the clock back" and have her realize that she still loves her country and its ideals as her character arc - maybe something she comes to realize and eventually confirm as she wanders Runeterra.

What i'm going to really hate is if she's Xerath'd - tossing out her character and lore for the sake of propping up and fleshing out another newer character like Yasuo. Luckily, she hasn't been Karthus'd. They got Swain right on the lore front - I hope they do the same with Riven.

Actually the Lee sin short story isn't new. It was added in 2016 when the universe site was launched.

Anyway my quick thoughts on the update: Ionia itself I think what they did with Ionia is pretty interesting,I always expected ionia to be mostly just japan/china in terms of architecture,so the fact that they live so close with nature kinda surprised me.I wish they had gone more into detail about the different subfactions making up ionia, but I guess this will be saved for later.

Irelia Her new bio and short story are ok,though I agree with you about her family, they just feel like a footnote in her lore now. I also don't really like that we aren't really given an exact reason as for why she can even levitate the blades, but this might become a plot point later on,so who knows?

Lee Sin I also feel like it was odd, that lee sin took Udyr to ionia even though he hadn't managed to deal with his own problems at the time, but that does explain why he even bothered to bring Udyr to the other monks instead of training him himself.I am pretty ok with his new bio, even if I preferred the way he lost his eyesight in the old lore.

Karma I do think that this new lore helped to solidify a theme for Karma. Before she was called the "enlightened one",but that didn't really mean anything in her old lore, she was just a mage with green fire for her spells and that was about it. Though I also feel a bit disappointed that she seems to move away from the whole "uniting both paths into one"-theme,but it is not entirely gone either,as she did compromise with her past selfs that killing 1 person was ok,so her past selves are ok with killing if its necessary. And it never really felt like she was pantheoned,as it still looks like dalha is still herself, she just uses Karmas name and fills Karmas role, but ultimately she was the one who told the others to kill the leader, she was the one who blew up the ship and when the other voices fell silent, she was left in charge. That being said, the reincarnation process of Karma feels rarther odd and her lore pretty much only shows Karma failing and doesn't give us a clear picture for the future.(not to mention that her gameplay and ingame-quotes don't match the lore update).

Yasuo&Riven Yasuos lore didn't really change much, except for Yasuo not finding any battle(only the aftermaths of a zaunite weapon) and that it did confirm that the elder was in fact Yasuos master(explaining why Yasuo was the only one who knows the wind technique). In rivens case I felt it was a bit disappointing that they toned down the "war crime"-aspect of her lore, which feels like they didn't want to portray Riven as too bad, though overall the result is pretty much the same and we might explore Rivens time in ionia later on.

I really don't think Irellia feels like a real character. She comes across as unlikeable and just TOO good in the story. I guess thats my feeling towards Ionia as a whole. Too great to be real or interesting.

Y'know what I think is the fault of why these character feel "meh" after their update. Because we dont get their colour stories anymore! We dont get that extra depth and detail into their psychology, motivations, personal battles like we use to.

From this year champion's feel.. less engaging than they otherwise could be because our understanding of them is confined just to the bio. Which is a narrated 3rd person perspective that only takes 1-2min read tops. Dont get me wrong, extended Bio are still great! But by their very nature they're too short, and very inpersonal to read because they're an "outside looking in" view into our favourite champs.

Riot has this newfound obsession with multiple people in a body.

Yup. This is getting annoying. I'm not 12 anymore to like the "OMG SHE/HE'S POSSESSED BY A DEMON/ENTITY AND IT'S GONNA TAKE THE BODY AND BE BADASS !!!11!!!!11!" as I used to.

My problem is none of these stories mesh with their kits or playstyles at all, especially Karma. Everyone knows I've been bitching about Karma incessantly for the past couple days but honestly I don't care, I've mained her for so long and will continue to do so, but like.. why? Her kit makes no sense now. So before she was a strong, successful woman who defended her people utilizing the concepts of balance and empowered herself for good things. Her kit, while quite boring after the repeated nerfs and unnecessary changes, represented this well -- a battle mage who also had supportive tendencies and wasn't too aggressive. Now she's this kumbaya gentle-as-a-flower pacifist and it makes NO sense with her kit, design, or voice lines. Not to mention, it's just plain boring and half-assed, like you said.

I was hoping Yasuo and rivens lore would be more intertwined and while I don't mind some new exposition, it seems more of a side grade than an upgrade to me.

I personally don't feel like they had to make Riven feel even worse about the war by being the cause of her teammates deaths, and I don't see why they had to turn Yasuo into a dick (but I guess it makes Yone being his role model even sadder?)

Also curious where he gets all that alcohol to drink...does he just brew it in the middle of nowhere? Lol

Still not sure why he decided to go back to his village instead of tracking riven...I mean he's still an outlaw. Doubt their opinion of him has changed at all. Also why random taliyah? Meh...

I know I will get hate for this ,but it's funny how Lee's new lore reflects new players who try him. He's a pretty good champs, but in new hands backfires ( mostly his R ). The things about him setting himself on fire, didn't really make sense. Why would anyone care if he set himself on fire? If he even did that, why were only his eyes damaged, but not his entire body?

Irelia's family are actually an EVEN BIGGER part to her character now.

Firstly, they do have names. Her father is Lito, we don't know her mother's name, she calls her grandma 'O-ma' and her brothers are Zelos, Kae, Ohn and 'Little Ruu.' She explicitly mentions them and even names them in their honor many many times in her voicelines. For instance, she'd name out her siblings when she Q's probably to honor them in some Ionian fashion.

Along with that, I remember a voiceline where she starts to remember and miss Zelos, who she was probably closest with, claiming that he "made the worst (corniest) jokes...oh how I miss them..."

I find interesting that they actually managed to keep Udyr in the Ionian War even if he is not from ionia now.
