Who Is the Ruined King?

Hey guys! This is my first time posting on the league forums. Recently, I developed a theory after reading a bit into the lore of Yorick (Happy birthday to my man- 6 years with no skin!). Now I sent a support ticket to riot actually asking around about some of the lore, and got some responses, so I'll iterate more on those after I get the main theory out of the way. Here it goes: Who is the Ruined King?

So, knowing the history of Yorick, along with the history gathered from Hecarim and Kalista, it seems like the ruined king abandoned his nation for a good while to get to the Blessed Isles. It was extremely difficult for Kalista, and if we look at how long ago this was, it seems like the ruined king shouldn't be alive now, but the fact that the curse still lives shows that he exists. And here, the larger, more out there conclusions start to surface. Here is the major jump: King Jarvan Lightshield IV, Exemplar of Demacia, is actually the Ruined King. Now the first thing that should come to mind is, If this was so long ago that people forgot the nations name, then how could Jarvan be alive? And where is the evidence he could live that long? It starts with one of Yoricks quotes when attacking dragon: "Your kind is supposed to live long. I am sorry." Of course, we then link this to Shyvana's lore, where her father, a terrifying dragon, was slain by him. Of course, that could have been recent- but it seems more likely that this happened during Jarvan's absence of Demacia, which coincides with the absence of the Ruined King. Shyvana, having dragon ancestry (Shown wonderfully in her kit), could very well have lived long enough to be with Jarvan during his travels. And, at that, the events took place long ago to the point where Hecarim and Thresh forgot their origin, meaning most people couldn't live long enough to recall Jarvan. For if his empire fell, surely his name would have been forgotten as well- until it surged in the new nation of Demacia.

That being the original theory, I am glad I sent in the support ticket, because a gentleman named Riot Gunny was wiling to point out some. Hopefully, we can iron them out in this thread. From there, we could either solidify the account that maybe Jarvan is the Ruined king, or, more likely, form a new identity for the King. Now, onto the support ticket.

The first thing Gunny pointed out was an excerpt from The Princelings Lament (stanza 10, lines 5 and 6), as follows:

"Cursed to undeath by this grief-maddened king. He begged it all end with his very last breath."

Gunny mentioned that the line "He begged it all end with his very last breath" contradicts Jarvan being the king, because it implies the Ruined King did indeed die. Note, he also stated that while he thinks it is likely that this poem was referencing the Ruined King, he wasn't its writer, and is unsure. Next:

"As he searched, Yorick slowly pieced together the events that led to the cataclysm: A king had arrived seeking to resurrect his queen, but instead, had doomed the Isles and everything on them. Yorick wished to find this “Ruined King” and undo the curse he had unleashed. But he felt powerless in the face of the seemingly endless death that surrounded him."

This excerpt names the Ruined King as a man who brought doom to the isles. The Princeling's Lament also tells a tale earlier in the poem of a king who "damned the world to endless strife"

"The monk told tales of a time forgotten An ancient queen, now dead and mulch-rotten. Of her king brought low by sorrow and woe, Who came to this isle to bring back her life, But damned the world to endless strife, Spirits of death and carrion crow."

As Gunny said as the recap:

  • It's likely that the king in the Princeling's Lament is the Ruined King, based on the similarities between that king and the Ruined King referenced in Yorick's biography.
  • Because of this, it's likely that the Ruined King is dead, since the king in the Princeling's Lament died full of regret after failing to resurrect his queen.
  • This means that for Jarvan IV to be the Ruined King, he would have to be a resurrected abomination. Without further evidence, it would be hard to believe that somebody as clean looking and good as J4 could be the Ruined King, regardless of his absence.

So, with the theory and its counters are out of the way, I would like to get the ball rolling with a few questions. Do you think we have the ruined king in the League already, or is the only thing left of the lost man his blade? Where are some more resources for who the king might be? Who might the Princelings Lament be referring to in the league already?

Big thanks to you all for taking the time to read through my post and its corresponding reply from riot. Hopefully, we can pull some meaningful speculation out here!

As far as we know, the empire of The Ruined King is from times before the creation of Demacia or Noxus and after the fall of the Empire of Mordekaiser, so, no... The Ruined King cant be a Jarvan (any Jarvan). Also, the Ruined King is from an empire "gone to dust and forgotten" and Demacia do not fit with that description.

My personal theory suggest that the Ruined King is a character who is already in the game... The altar of the Lord.

http://i.imgur.com/JeOyw.png

According to my crazy teory, the King forgot everything about his past after the Ruinnation of the Blessed Isles due the effects of the Mist (Kalista and Hecarim have this problem as well) , a thing that he did to ressurect his Wife: The Lady Altar.

""Sometimes I - I can almost remember... her face.""

But... Why i think that The Lady and the Lord are Queen and King of the "Ruined Kingdom"? Well, because the connection between the Lady and Hecarim:

"Remember who you once were, Hecarim!"

Her quote towards him indicates that she knew who he was before the Ruinnation, because, as said in the lore of the Centaur, he was "Born into an empire long since gone to dust and forgotten, Hecarim was squired to a legendary company of knights known as the Iron Order, a brotherhood sworn to defend their king’s land. There he endured the harshest training imaginable, a punishing regime that schooled him to be a formidable warrior." What kind of woman would know personally the best knight of the King? The Queen of course.

"For the King!"

The Lady also mentions The King (Who is her Husband acording to my theory), and she did it before any other character in the game. Something that the Lord doesnt because he cant remember that he IS the King... but she does because:

"I still remember. Only fragments... but, I remember"

Did i mention that the Queen wants to be destroyed... just like the Lady Altar? "Please, end my torment!"" "...But when the queen returned to life she was a horror of decayed meat and maggot-ridden flesh who begged to be allowed to die once more." (from the lore of Hecarim)

Yoricks quote towards the dragon simply refers to the fact that Yorick is attacking and killing the dragon ingame, nothing else.(Also Shyvanas dad was killed by her mother and Jarvan only helped Shyvana to kill said mother,he wasn't the one to land the final blow).

I'm making an epic lore for The Ruined King. It's going to involve: Mordekaiser Hecarim Kalista Ryze Azir Evelynn Lucian Thresh Nautilus Maokai Yorick Bard

I'm seven chapters in so far, but I have a strong idea where my whole story is leading. My story goes more in depth in these character's personalities, but it also brings a lot of backstory to characters, items, and events. One of these items is item 3078 Trinity force. It is a symbol of a truce between three great empires that conquered Runeterra: Shurima, Ionia, and Targo. These kingdoms each gave a signature weapon to represent their kingdom: item 3086 Zeal (now item 3101 for production issues), item 3057 Sheen, and item 3044 Phage respectively.

We are aware of Shurima and Ionia being ancient civilizations. However, we aren't aware of Targo. The reason being, is that Targo was single-handedly the largest of these empires by far. It was so large that it had split itself into various kingdoms: Freljord, Targon, and The Iron Empire. The Iron Empire was the kingdom that Mordekaiser Mordekaiser had ruled over. It covered all of the eastern coast of Valoran. It was such a large kingdom that Mordekaiser just called it an empire out of his pride as a Kaiser.

Ever since the downfall of Mordekaiser in an unknown war. He was revived by liches to create his new empire called the Immortal Bastion. It is said that a concentrated group of tribes and warbands defeated the Immortal Bastion, this group would soon be known as Noxus: an alliance of the broken Iron Empire and other barbaric tribes.

There was a time during the breaking of the Iron Empire where a new kingdom was rising. This kingdom was aided by a magnanimous chieftain who settled all disputes with great zeal in the fallen empire. He settled in a bay near the Ironspike Mountains and named his army after the empire: The Iron Order. Unfortunately, the army grew restless as the war they were used to was no longer present. During this time, the Queen was assassinated and died a slow death by poison, incurable by all attempts from the king. It was during this time that the army riled up and used this event as an excuse to exert violence.

One particular event a knight commander found himself surrounded by enemies, cut off from the rest of the Iron Order. This knight commander fought valiantly to the very end. This knight commander's name was Demacia. After the battle, the knights lamented over the death of Demacia, and swore fealty to the lieutenant he watched over the most.

In greed for power, the lieutenant blackmailed a general of the Iron Order with information that she was hiding from the King: a cure for the poison in a foreign island. Even though the Queen has been long dead, the King demanded an escapade to these isles and left a chieftain from his former village in charge of handling the kingdom. This is the escapade that would transform The Blessed Isles into The Shadow Isles.

Most of the crew died, the king, the lieutenant, and the general. However, one knight survived. This knight traveled across the seas alone back to the kingdom. He relayed the fall of every person and the horrors of magic he saw. Although, the chieftain was stubborn in his belief to remain in the kingdom at the bay, anxiety grew in the citizens of said kingdom and most individuals followed this man on a pilgrimage to find sanctuary from the horrific magic--as in life the King was known to be a great wizard. Eventually, the citizens found sanctuary with the ruins of Targonian nation built on a marble mountain. Thus the knight reformed a new civilization based on perseverance and chivalry and named this civilization from the person who inspired him: Demacia.

The people who remained in the abandoned kingdom mostly mages who knew how ridiculous these fears were and some villagers who fought back their fear of magic in devotion to the king in his glorious days. Though, the chieftain was not ignorant. The chieftain was given a tome from the king before he left as a trial to see if he could handle the kingdom. This tome happened to speak of powerful artifacts that had power similar to what the knight described before the departure. Thus pouring all efforts into studying the tome left by his king, the chieftain spent the rest of his lifetime understanding the intricate design of the workings of magic. The chieftain taught these things to his successor before he died and dubbed his successor, The Rune Sage, for the unique way magic is commanded in the tome. The generations of Rune Sages would eventually form a Magic Council to protect the village and the Rune Sage with, an apprentice, entire world from the power of World Runes.

Unfortunately, the Magic Council could not even protect their own village and warlocks abusing the World Runes held in the Magic Council caused a cataclysm that wiped out the entire kingdom and even a large portion of the Ironspike Mountains. A galactic explosion similar to a nova on a small scale. The Magic Council had no choice but to go their separate ways as there were no survivors left in the kingdom. Some mages left by boat to the neighboring kingdom of Ionia, and escapees of the warlocks' wrath were swept to a harbor island. With the amount of refugees moving into the harbor, the island grew to what could be considered a kingdom based on docks and grit. This civilization was called Bildgewater.

People from kingdoms all over heard of the great explosion that fell a kingdom and made way to see the carnage, but instead what they found was a magical oasis a divine crystalline basin of mystical properties. Thus wizards and inventors studied together to create miracle works that any practical person can use. Part of their experiments involved creating monuments and buildings based on materials they found, and it just so happened to eventually create a foundation. Progress never stopped in these areas and the inventions inspired many to come and visit the city that soon became a metropolis. This metropolis is known as Piltover.

Unfortunately, this metropolis housed way too many individuals. Eventually, the research found itself divided into practicality development and fundamentals research. Those who worked on methods to make practical use of magic with machines lied in Piltover, while those who wanted to remain closer to the foundations of the land worked in the underground to excavate the secrets of these magical crystals. These methods turned out to be quite lethal as the fumes of reactions caused tremendous pollution, so they were forced into the canyons of Piltover to more easily handle the pollution that would rise into Piltover. These canyons were dubbed Zaun.

And so goes my interpretation of the origins of the universe. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

It's definetly not Jarvan.

Also, I think Riot mentioned that the land where Ruined King, Kalista and Hecarim are from is the land we never heard before, the new continent.

What about the kaiser Mordekaiser His name does mean king of the dead and his lore give very little about his past. He could very well be the Ruined King

If want to put all the pieces together read Thresh, Kalista, Mordekaiser, Hecarim, Yorick and Maokai lore but yeah these lot are connected.

Sorry to Necro this post but to answer your question with the release of Senna's Lore, there is this quote,

"Though Senna and Lucian’s love survived even death, now they face the consequences of her rebirth. Senna knows what they have to do next, a secret gleaned within the lantern.

Find the Ruined King, and stop him at any cost…"

It does not give an identity but it confirms he is alive.

Welcome to the League boards.

There I no way that Jarvan IV (who is not the king of Demacia, nor technically even a prince) is the Ruined King. Aside from what Riot Gunny said, we have detailed lore on J4, and some less detailed lore on J3 and J1, so unless Riot is releasing deliberately incorrect lore, then Jarvan exactly who he says he is. Unless he's Leblanc, of course.

Even though we don't' have exact dates, the Ruined King and the Blessed Isles are way older than Demacia. No mortal alive even remembers that the Blessed Isles once existed, not even in legends or histories.

The Ruined King is likely still active in the Shadow Isles somewhere. There is no permanent death there, so unless he escaped the Isles he'll still be haunting the place. He was a powerful sorcerer when alive, so it makes sense he would be a powerful shade/lick/wraith/ghost/whatever, although whether he's as powerful as Karthus or Mordekaiser is up for debate. Yorick certainly believes he is still around, and the friendly monk is preparing to do battle with him.

I doubt the Princeling's Lament refers to any champion. The guy dies at the end of the poem, and all the Shadow Isles champs are accounted for, so unless the Princeling is the next Shadow Isles champ, he is just a stranger. Also, the Princeling might not actually exist in the lore. The poem could just be an in-universe story, without describing real events.

As for the kingdoms described the poem, both that of the Princeling and the Ruined King's own home, remember that there are more nations in Runeterra than just he major factions Demacia, Noxus, etc. Some of these other civilisations are now extinct, like Icathia, and some have been assimilated into Noxus. Others are still free nations. So mysterious people like the Ruined King can exist on their own, without ties to pre-established factions or characters.

Since he didn't play an important role in the Shadow Isles event and on its universe page dont bother with it
