An Idea On How to Fit Summoner's Rift Into The Lore

Note: This is a rough draft, if you have any ideas to add to this I'd be happy to add them.

I appreciate any criticism and please ask any questions you have! :D

Recently, I've been brainstorming ways on how we can fit the maps into the lore. I came up with this idea and I wanted to know everyone's opinion.

Basically, we needed a way to fit the maps into the game. Not only that, but we needed a way to explain why Lucian and Thresh would work together (any other rivalries). For the sake of example, I'm only going to cover Summoner's Rift.

Summoners have essentially been removed from the lore. In all honesty, I really didn't like the idea behind the Summoners in the first place because when I play the game, I feel like I'm playing as the champion, not playing for the champion. But, I don't mind the fundamental idea. So, I have drafted up my own version of a "Summoner".

A Summoner is a supernatural being who existed in Runeterra. These Summoners granted natural beings (the champions we see in-game and all other beings who exist in Runeterra) wishes. But, the Summoners had to be careful what they granted. It was possible that they could grant terrible power to someone who would abuse it. It was up to the Summoners to use their wisdom to decide whether or not to grant these wishes. It was fabled that these Summoners were wiped out by an unknown force. But, before they were wiped out they were able to store their power into the Rift.

The Rift is a place that was created before the Summoners were wiped out. They wanted their power to continue to help people, but they did not want it to be abused. They needed someone to be able to control the power, but they needed a way to identify who could wield it. So they designed the Rift. It pit groups of people against each other to destroy the heart of their enemy's base... Otherwise known as the Nexus. The Rift was able to record the data of each participant to identify who could responsibly control the power of the Summoners.. It analyzed factors such as teamwork, mercy, forgiveness, and many more.

In modern day Runeterra, the Rift is unknown to all. But a young explorer was able to uncover its existence who went by the name Ezreal.-

Ezreal, intrigued by this never-before-seen land entered the Rift. It had a different glow than the rest of Runeterra and had peculiar structures scattered around the area. A light that shined brighter than the rest of the Rift guided Ezreal to a nexus. Once there, Ezreal examined the rock inside of the nexus and, deciding that it would not harm him, he touched it. Instantaneously a figure shot directly upwards casting a large shadow over Ezreal.

"We are the Summoners. Two groups of five shall fight. One group will obtain our power." (<-- Someone please think of something better than this. I tried to keep this part concise but it just sounds bad ): )

Ezreal, knowing much about the legends of the Summoners, rushed back home to tell everyone about the Rift. The Rift was a mysterious place which required two groups of five to fight. The reason for the Rift was to pass on the Summoners' power to others. But they needed to work with four other people.

Just in-case some things didn't make sense I'm going to try to clear them up here.

What/Who is a Summoner? A Summoner is a supernatural being who existed in Runeterra that had the ability to grant any wish to anyone whenever they wanted. These Summoners wanted the best for Runeterra and would not grant anything that would harm their world.

What is the Rift? The Rift is an arena that the Summoners created before they were wiped out by an unknown force. The Rift was created because the Summoners wanted their powers to be passed down to someone that could ensure Runeterra stays safe (for the most part). The Rift was designed to record data on people who participated in its trials. Using the data, it will pick out individuals that are worthy of the Summoners' power. But, you need to work in groups of five.

Does the entire group get the Summoners' power? No. You are forced to work with four others, but the Rift grants its power to individuals. This allows the people of Runeterra to work with anyone available to them at any moment.

Why would rivals work together? Because they want the power of the Summoners. For example, Lucian would be able to work with Thresh. He might not like it, but he would be able to live with it because by working with Thresh, he is able to participate in the trials of the Rift. If the Rift deems him worthy, he can grant any wish. With that power he could bring Senna back. Basically Lucian would temporarily work with Thresh so he could get Senna back.

**How would anyone evil be able to achieve this power? **They wouldn't, but they would still participate. In Runeterra, they do not know that how the Rift operates. They do not know how it picks the worthy. For all they know, if they complete more trials they will get the power.

What are the trials of the Rift? The trials are the games we play.

This is my personal opinion, but I kind of like the lore and game being separate.

I think of it this way. Say you want to make a MOBA based off of the Marvel Universe. The map would be a representation of the Marvel lore, but that specific battle field wouldn't necessarily exist canonically in the lore. Also, the champs would be balanced, but in the lore Dare Devil wouldn't stand a chance against Thanos, or maybe they would never even meet.

Same goes for League in my view. SR, Howling Abyss, Butchers Bridge, Twisted Treeline are all thematic representations of places in Runeterra, but that actual specific layout doesn't have to exist. Furthermore, champs like Yi wouldn't stand a chance against celestials like Soraka. But in game the champs are all balanced.

The Iow and summoner are a bad deus ex machina that limited the lore. It's better of dead and never be seen ever.
