Wasn't there an overlap in idenities between Old Lore Leona and Braum?

Leona's old lore was "Protect the weak, the helpless, and the needy, blah blah blah etc" with her putting her own life at risk because of it. Braum is "protect the weak (poro), the helpless (poro), and the needy (poro)" and put himself in harms way to do it.

Hyperboles aside, what separated Leona and Braum character? They both seem to have the same END goal character ideals. I say end because I feel people will try to bring up Leona's upbringing in a society, but a backstory isn't where a story resides in.

I best thing that I can think of is that she kinda prioritized protecting the Solari, while Braum seems less faction based. With the new Leona lore, she basically only protects the Solari.

There is also a noticable overlap between Braum and Taric, though not completely. They are both big bodied, ultra-kind, heroes who swoop down and protect. I don't think it is a huge problem though since Taric is the protector of beauty and will murder without a second thought if that person is trying to destroy that beauty. Compared to Braum who is a protector weak and it is hard to imagine Braum killing anyone to any circumstance besides the most dire possible.

Self doubt, mostly. If we go by her old League Judgment, Leona was full of it. She felt her protecting of people may have been selfish. She was afraid she was growing dependent on the powers the sun gave her. She was worried because she honestly didn't know what the sun's goals were, and that if she angered it, she could lose everything. But despite all that, she still wanted to protect the weak.

There was also a theme of wanting to go back and fix the Rakkor from their old barbarous ways. But that was really mentioned in like, one sentence.

Compared to Braum, who is more a watered down Hollywood version of Hercules. He has no self doubt, he has no real end goals, he's just a wandering hero off doing heroic things and being a swell guy.

Then you know, there was of course the whole have the people who raised her murdered by Diana, and possible revenge and reconciliation story arc. Dealing with the whole sun/moon dichotomy. Yeah, as a whole, Leona was kind of a more developed character with a decent story to go into.

Backstory defines a lot of a character's motivation and personality. I'm not sure why you're so quick to dismiss it. It's probably more important in appreciating a League character than in other universes, really, due to the fact that we get very little continuous story from them. Guessing how a character would likely approach a certain scenario or interact with other characters in the future, as well as what struggles their immediate environment would force them into, probably holds the largest mindshare of the community.

Braum is a character who can act according to his ideals within a community that supports them. Leona was more of a rebel against the virtues espoused by her tribe. There's a world of difference between how that weighs on their personalities and priorities. Braum can wander around as his jovial self helping whoever he sees and then move along with his life with scarcely a thought. Every decision Leona made could be seen as more of a struggle against harsh realities and a test of whether she wielded enough power to enforce her ideals against them.

Well Leona was thinking a bit further ahead(based on her judgement, not her original lore),in that she feared that helping others could actually do more harm than good, because the people would start depending on her, because some people who were protected by Leona from bullies died in the rite of kor, because they never learned how to fight for themselves.

Though overall I think Riot made Leona more of a grey character in the new lore specifically to differentiate her a bit more from Braum(and Taric)
