Demacia is anti-magic? But what of it’s magic influenced protectors?

This question came to me during the latest lore update. Xin Zhao is as loyal to Demacia as anyone. But he’s also Ionian, of a nation that not only values magic but is suffused by it. That holds it as a sacred part of the land. Is he uncomfortable with his patron nations views on magic? Heck what about Shyvana? She’s made of the stuff to a large degree. Have they influenced the king’s and prince Jarvan’s views on magic in any way?

Demacians are anti magic, but the nation itself is probably the most magical spot in the known Runeterra, Petricite doesn't dampen magic, it absorbs it, which means the surrounding area is like a giant time bomb of pure magical energy. In addition, there's a vault beneath Demacia which was built for and does contain some world runes.

As for Shyvanna, her existence has given Prince Jarvan a more open minded view towards magical entities.

If the Kayle and Morgana stories are correct, Demacia is fearful for it's misuse, not in general. They both went 'too far' with their power yet the populace were fine with them watching over them before hand. That over time has become an anti-magic movement. In the end it's down to the person. If Lux was publically known as a mage and shown to be a loyal Demacian, the general populace no doubt wouldn't care, because she's not out to kill them, she standing by them. Flip the other side the not so secret Sylas is what stands out, madmen and murderers who are mages, when the decent mages don't stand out as the society don't let them.

This is the kind of stories Riot needs to tell. A nation of mistrusting but good people.

At the moment all we are getting is a nation building Sentinels against their mutant population because they 'fear and hate them'.

Demacia is anti-magic yes, but that doesn't mean there are exceptions to the rules that people are willing to begrudgingly tolerate or turn a blind eye to entirely.

Xin and Shyvana are Prince Jarvan's personal retainers, so obviously, they have given him an understanding that magic isn't bad or all evil like the general society believes. Therefore, these two people are under the direct protection of the royal family. Jarvan's father may feel shamed or disgusted by his son's choices, and the populace or nobles may despise Xin and Shyvana, but they are locked by decorum and propriety in how they can deal with them because of the prince. They cannot openly disrespect the Prince, and Jarvan's family cannot openly chastise or punish him without becoming a public spectacle of familial unrest that could put blood in the water and draw the dynasty's enemies to find weak points to try to take the throne.

As for the Crownguards and their latent magical abilities, everyone but Lux lives in constant denial. The only reason Lux doesn't is because she's worldly, and her magic is too much to simply attribute to divine intervention or the works of deities like you could apply to Garen's magic.

Galio is powered by petricite, and as such, he's a pure creation of Demacia. His life when exposed to magic is probably not even considered magically based, simply on grounds that he's a weapon of war created by Durand to protect Demacia. Most people are probably even too ignorant to know how petricite works or even how Galio comes to life, so again, most probably live in denial about how he functions. And really the only person in Demacia who would have lived long enough to see Galio be alive more than once (or at all, outside of Lux) would be Poppy, as Yordles are very long lived.

Look at Christianity as an example - there is a clear distinction between divine acts of God and witchcraft and we're taught to reject witchcraft.

I'd imagine Demacians would see Kayle in a very similar way - everything she does is divine whereas witchcraft is evil.

Shyvanna is an odd case, however, and Xin comes from a place where their magic is just part of the land and their beliefs and values are simply tied to the land (very similar to the Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people).

At least, this is how I rationalize this stuff.

While Ionia is drenched with magic it's not like every Ionian is able to manipulate it, many see its effects the same way other ppl see the weather. It's something that exists and makes things happen.

Xin Zhao surely felt the difference but he already was used to live in Noxus which was so oppressive that Demacia felt like new fresh air. Lets also not forget that the Petricite fuels magic in the soil which is one of the reasons Demacia is so flourish.

Anyway, Xin Zhao isn't so close to magic to have its presence impact his everyday feelings imo.
