My Favorite Kind Of Character Arch Type In Media

There are many different kinds of characters, from the classic damsel in distress, to the more modern empowered badass lady, and so much more that I creating a list would take days, possibly even weeks. Out of all of the however, my favorite of these many different character arch types to choose from has consistently been the "powerful but used."

The "powerful but used" is a character that has an untold amount of power, whether it be magic, martial arts, or just intelligence, among many other things, often either hidden away or yet to be completely unlocked, but the fraction that they do have control over right off the bat makes them incredibly dangerous and a force to be reckoned with in their respective world/story/universe. Despite all this, the character is somehow used by others, sometimes willingly, sometimes not, but most often it's from emotional manipulation or through outright force, such as mind control, with the one holding their chain usually being the main antagonist of said story, but they can also be used by a group rather than a single individual. Something about how they have so much power at their fingertips yet still fall under the control of another has always intrigued me, and in a way helps humanize the character and makes a great balance, that even though they contain this awesome strength, they still can be led astray.

Some great examples of this would be;

  • Haku from Naruto
  • Lapiz Lazuli from Steven Universe
  • Angel from Borderlands 2
  • Terra from Teen Titans

So far, there are yet to be any champions in League that fulfill this arch-type, which is understandabe as most probably don't want to play a champion that's theme is about being used and controled. However, I could see this coming in to play in Morgana new lore when her rework is out, and if you want to stretch it out, technically Kayn coud follow under this arch-type as well, considering his relationship with Rhaast.

Some ideas:

  1. A paladin... I've got some ideas for this.
  2. Busty Mage (well, more busty champs in general)
  3. Something inspired by the GW1 domination/inspiration mesmer. Think W/U control in MTG terms.
  4. A classical mage who uses more than 1 element.
  5. Someone who duel wields swords (katarina's kit fails this fantasy)
  6. An interesting and popular dragon. Shyvana and Aussie are two of the least played champs in the game.
  7. Lady Luck
  8. a champ inspired by an egocentric broadway star.
  9. I'd like to see the previous evelynn brought back
  10. A mad summoner. His ult summons random champions (either existing champs or the souls of champs who died before the current in-game year).
  11. A champ filled with british humor.
  12. An anime style catgirl, nya.
  13. Weapon girls. Think Strike Witches, Kantai collection/azur lane, girls frontline, etc. since riot is going for the weebs. They'd be like the darkin but a lot cuter and not evil. Maybe they are runeterra's newest answer to the darkin.
  14. An ADC/AD bruiser meant to support first.
  15. I remember reading that originally Lissandra was going to be a sword user back in the JOJ. Maybe bring that idea back as the one who the current lissandra took the form of, and maybe the person who blinded her.
  16. An auto attack based AP marksman designed for bot lane.
  17. A champ that deals all true damage.

I tend to like whimsical, dreamer-esque characters, especially male characters since those descriptors are things that are generally frowned upon by western society. Almost all of League's human male champions are centered around strength (of the body, the mind, or both), masculinity, and firmness.

I love the new Nunu because childish wonder does fall into this category, and Jihn is an interesting example who explores the dark side of whimsy, but it would be nice to see more guys enter the roster who have more whimsical natures.

I'd also like to see a male champion walking a similar line to Evelynn. A notorious flirt that hits on most of the other champions in league regardless if they're male, female, dragon, or whatever Malphite is. Totally different archetype, but I thought I'd toss that in there.
