Either Thresh Wasn't Evil From the Start...

Or the other monks of the Blessed Isles were dumb as rocks and it's a miracle they lasted as long as they did.

If Thresh_ wasn't_ a sadist from the beginning, then we've got a pretty reasonable fall-from-grace story in which no one did anything terribly stupid. Monks assign a guy with a strong will to look after all the spooky artifacts, spooky artifacts end up being spooky enough to turn Thresh evil, Ruination makes it all worse, and so on.

But if Thresh was a sadist from the beginning...then who's the brainiac who stuck a known sadist in a vault full of powerful magical relics unsupervised? That decision would require an unprecedented level of stupid. For us to accept that premise, we would also have to accept that a society of enlightened scholars were somehow simultaneously total morons.

Heck, even if Thresh was a sadist and just really good at hiding it, the other monks would still be idiots for having such a poor vetting process for an extremely dangerous and easily abused position of power.

If that many people were that stupid, the Ruination would be redundant because the Isles would have already mismanaged themselves into oblivion.

Therefore, I find myself assuming Thresh was at least morally neutral before the artifacts and Ruination because it's the only situation in which I don't also have to assume the island paradise of enlightened scholars was run by smooth-brained cavemen.

He wasn't. He became a sadist out of sheer boredom.

Thresh turned evil from the constant encouragement from the relics, but he only got to stay because he was really good at his job. If I remember correctly, everyone knew he was corrupt, but decided he was best kept in his role (and he never betrayed them either I think, so in a way they were right)

Yeah all the evil from those magic objects corrupted the Guy, and he started calling himself Thresh the chain warden and torturing those things because he believed he had power over them and was doing justice. Then the Ruination made him into a straight up abomination of pure evil.

in all honesty i'm for a new champion that fills the "completely clueless bag of rocks" niche. We haven't had one of those in a while. and what better person to fulfill that role than a leader of monks lording over ancient artifacts.

Tbf, a lot of sadists can seem like a normal person when around others. So even if he was a sadist from the start, I doubt they had any idea.

A lot of psychopaths are really good at hiding their own psychotic selfs in public, so if Thresh was already a sadistic evil monster before he guarded the vault, then it is safe to say that he was good at hiding it. Also keep in mind that overseeing the vault likely needed someone who had an exceptional willpower, so thresh might have been chosen for that and not because of his moral compass.

That being said, i think they updated Hecarims lores to actually exclude Threshs role in the ruination, so it wouldn't surprise me if they consider retconning him again. After all I think there were people who were upset that Thresh wasn't an actual jailer anymore.
