Theory: Aatrox was a horned owl.

As far as I can remember, we only have two sentences from the lore about his appearance, one from his biography that states, "his wings were the golden light of dawn," and one from his short champion description that states his current form is, "a brutal approximation of his previous form." And other than that, we've got his actual model.

So I got to thinkin', "what animal can have gold wings, and also has a face similar to Aatrox's current face?" And the only animal I could think of is the horned owl. While generally, the owls are more brownish or reddish, they can look gold if they're the right combination of red, light brown, and white. That said, the "light of the dawn" is actually a lot more reddish than gold. So it could either be an exaggeration of the description of his actual color, to make it sound more noble, or his colors themselves were exaggerated more towards gold. Either explanation works.

As for the wings' shape, while you might say they look more bat-like than bird-like, I want to point out something interesting. They could have gone all-in with a bat look by altering them just slightly so that they appear more like bones with flesh stretched between. But instead, they left it more ambiguous. They specifically went without the bone-like extensions his old wings had. So it could be that without the ability to create feathers his magic attempted to just recreate the span of his wings with flesh. Gross, but an acceptable explanation. (Edit: the point about the wings also applies to the dragon theory, since dragon wings are essentially the same as bat wings)

The most striking aspect that made me believe he was specifically a horned owl, and not an eagle or similar bird of prey, is his face. The way the headpiece comes to a point at his nose looks very similar to the pattern found on most owls. And of course, the horns are similar to the "horns" (the feathered ear-tufts) such owls have. Albeit, aside from the fact he has horns, the shape is entirely different. But that can be explained by the imperfect nature of his form-- more importantly, there's isn't a different winged, "horned" animal with horns or anything that look anything like the angled and exaggerated shape of Aatrox's. And a bat doesn't fit, because the downward-pointed shape of the design is a direct contrast to the upward-pointed shape it would take if it were attempting to mimic a bat's snout.

For the record the fact that one of the Ascended, Cebotaru, had the appearance of a wolf means that the animal forms of the Ascended are not strictly tied to Egyption mythology. So any animal is fair game.

As for the other two Darkin, I do like the idea that Rhaast was a shark. Though the shape of his horns isn't really reminiscent of a hammerhead's. While the fin-like parts on his forearms are evidence towards this idea, the fact his horns are in fact two and not one that branches in a T shape hurts that idea a lot. I think it's more likely he was a bull or a moose. Varus, I won't even get into. Because he didn't receive the VU he should have to coincide with the change in his lore. He completely lacks anything to make him appear like a Darkin, and that's solely due to their decision not to change his appearance to match the story. So any speculation about him would have no basis at all.

I for one would really love if they made skins for each of them where they've reclaimed their old forms. But perhaps that actually needs to wait until the Void fully breeches the rift between dimensions. My hope is that they'll do what they did with Gangplank, and during a big event make their Darkin forms skins (and give them for free to anyone who owns the champ) while swapping the base skin for the Ascended form. With Azir's return, it's possible that he could find a way to return them to their previous forms. Then I'd finally have an answer to this burning question.

I think the reason(s) Varus doesn’t have a traditional darkin form (at least an in-universe one) is that he’s only recently formed, and is still struggling with his hosts for control. Add to it that it’s two human wills together bonded by love against his own, and you get a still mostly human look.

Here's the thing I think most fail to comprehend when speculating Aatrox's Ascended form. Most people are complacent in their assumption it must be an animal, without acknowledging Runeterra has natural creatures that we IRL would consider "mythical".

Would it not be appropriate to consider an Ascended emulating a Griffin, Unicorn, or ..... a Dragon, that would legitimately match both Aatrox's ferocity and majesty (and he's strikingly similar to Shyvana).

On the other hand, and this is based on nothing other than blind speculation, I'm convinced Rhaast was something like a Bongo Antelope on account of the horns. I doubt Rhaast could have been a Bull instead, a bovine should be too bulky and slow a creature to effectively utilize such a tool. I think the Hammerhead thing is an irregular conclusion, as I can't fathom why anyone from a culture of arid desert people would want to embody anything from the ocean.

And Varus is literally impossible to tell for the time being.

I second moose for Rhaast because he's also got cloven hooves and no fear of death, just like a real moose.

Still waiting on 'Guardian of the Sands' Aatrox, Rhaast and Varus where they're in their Ascended forms.

I think the grey and bony parts of the darkin are an approximation of their ascended armor, akin to Nasus's helmet and gauntlets etc. So Aatrox's head gear is more a crude representation of his ascended helmet but also twisted as the darkin were said to change and mould their appearance through will later on.

I'm not sure what animal Aatrox would be. Riot has said that the asceneded aren't necessarily animal but can take the form of a concept based on the ascendant and their culture/beliefs. I think some version of animal is a safe bet though, considering all the darkin in 'Twilight Of The Gods' possesed animalian features or were fully anthropomorphic.

For Rhaast, seeing as his entire head is armored and grey, I imagined that his appearance was more akin to Azir. Azir has the form or shape of a bird but he's not 'feathered' the way a bird is ( He's golden, as opposed to having a natural covering of fur/scales liek Nasus and Renekton ). So Rhaast might be something like a golden form of an Iberian (Shuriman) Ibex. His specific horns branching out like a hammerhead's could be his stylistic choice after 'corruption' that he warped or maybe for extra maneuverability in combat idk.

I personally like to think that some of the Ascended's forms made them better suited for certain domains, for lack of abetter word. Aatrox had wings, so he could overlook the skies. Renekton was probably adept at travelling through an aquatic environment (the river Renek perhaps) and Rhaast was probably agile and energetic (maybe suited for climbing and jumping across mountainous terrain like a Mountain goat).

For Varus, if his sister was Valeeva ( from TotG) then his animal form is even less clear than the others. Seeing as the humans whose forms he moulded are still very much existing/alive inside there somewhere, his form may retain more humanity. I think Riot is implying though that his form or 'concept' isn't exactly based off of an animal per say but idk. If I remember correctly,Valeeva had alabster skin and poisonous spines on her shoulders. Idk what that could be (maybe somethign scorpion like or a Runeterran animal) but I'd love if Varus had a visual update to better suit his new darkin thematic.

I'd also love to see an Ascended skin-line for 3 of these guysso we can see what they were like,as well as Darkin skin-lines for Nasus,Renekton and possibly Azir.

SO does this mean we get to call Aatrox Hedwig now?

I'm personally of the group that believes Aatrox's ascended form was that of a dragon. The wings, the scales, etc all lend themselves to "dragon" on their own, but in a lot of the early thumbs for his splash art they had fire coming out of his mouth as well which sells it for me. This idea is still present in his final splash to a degree, if you look closely on the animated version of his splash on his universe page you can see steam coming from his mouth and embers coming from his eyes. Intentional or not his whole design screams dragon to me.

I actully never considered a horned owl to be Aatrox's animal form but it does make some sense and the only real problem i have with this is trying to imagine it.
