My opinion on this recent Urgot reflection

Ask Riot How You Get That S+ on Urgot

So in this reflection on Urgot in the recent Ask Riot article, Rioter Statikk commented on why Urgot has had such a difficult time being updated. On certain points, I agree with him, such as Urgot's kit being slightly contradictory, but on the thematics I kinda disagree, so I thought I'd post the way I see it and see if any other Urgot players might agree.

(P.s. Didn't know which bored to post on, so it's here. All hail the Urgod Urgot )

So the way I have always seen it, Urgot is a pile or grotesque horror and is riddled with contradictions. This is due to how unnatural of a thing he is. For instance, he has died, but is no longer dead. He is a pile of obese flesh, but has artificial mobility through his legs. He is held together in a flimsy-looking manner (stitches and tubes), yet he's tanky. He has a knife, but it's also a gun. All of these things make little sense together, but Urgot has no need to care. Beyond death, Urgot is still the same killer as before, but now he is better equipped and a little more tired than he used to be. Yes he has the artillery tech to bombard enemies, but he is in no way just high tech. He is revived through necromancy, and he behaves as such. His ult is exactly the sort of thing that one would expect to be a favorite choice for a killer revived through dark means and infused with tech capable of putting him right into the fray (which is where he has always wanted to be, even in his lore).

I think I'm being unclear. Urgot was an executioner and a soldier who would not die and was always in the front lines charging in. Due to circumstances he could not predict, he has lost the ability to attack that way, but has instead been given a ranged means of fighting. This was not ideal at first, but he has made due, getting the thrill of charging into battle from his ult when he can while mastering the art of mowing down his foes. Now, this unnatural mass can't be all that energetic (he'd be too perfect if he had EVERY good trait), so he can't be relentlessly charging in 100% of the time. In fact, it's quite tiresome, so Urgot only does it when he really feels up to it, sowing chaos onto the battlefield and numbing himself to some of the pains involved in the rush of battle. While not doing that, Urgot must take it easy on his tired mass of flesh, and employs the utilization of his ranged weapons to their fullest so he himself does not have to exert himself too much to acquire the thrill of the kill. His tech even combos together nicely if he can mark an enemy first to let him fire with lock-on precision for a short time until he feels up for charging in once more. He's not a mess, he just can't perform at his preferred level of combat for nearly as long as he used to.

This may not have been the original design, but it is what Urgot has become to me. A ranged Sion-complex without the boundless energy. I think Statikk said it best when comparing his two modes (Artillery and going in hot): "The dissonance between these two identities courses throughout his entire character," but I disagree on that making him lack an identity. In fact, if his identity is an unnatural mass of flesh and tech, this dissonance fits thematically pretty well. Even in his gameplay he is an unnatural mess: A shorter ranged anti-marksmen marksmen, anti-tank tank, anti-assassin siege blob. He is a walking contradiction that provides a unique experience with his "tanky adc" outlook that you can only get from Urgot or Graves, with Graves being unable to go headfirst into the entire enemy team and have them forcefully made to flee from him like Urgot can. I keep hearing that Urgot needs a rework, but to be honest he is pretty good right now. His kit is old and there aren't too many plays that can be made with it, but you have to remember that Urgot just doesn't have the energy in him to be consistently play-making like some of these young new champs. He has a job to do and he just wants to do it and go home. He isn't showing off, and he cares not for your bulls***. He is Urgot, and he is a beautiful mess.

(Although a VU for this beautiful mess to really accentuate his curves and jiggles would be pretty cool.)

They said he lacks a cohesive identity in terms of how he operates in the game. At current, his kit is a hybrid of a tank and an ADC, two classes that can't really mesh comfortably. As such, he can't really do either particularly well, and suffers in that people don't know how to play him. His looks alone don't merit his constant seat at the bottom of the pick barrel, as ugly champs like Pantheon and Mordekaiser have had much higher play rates despite their looks. So this means Urgot has fundamental kit issues, which Statikk addressed. They either have to find some middle ground with his two conflicting roles or either push him into one or the other. Considering that he's mostly played top lane, I'd love to see them work out of most of his ADC style mechanics and focus him on being an extremely short ranged bruiser, with emphasis on his shield and ult, which is his most iconic spell in his kit.

You are right. I think the most problematic thing about Urgot is his gameplay. It has a cool concept with the lock on missle... but it's so poorly done. They should really find a way to make his kit fit theme wise. There is cool stuff you could do with "reanimited ugly cyborg horror" but his kit has nearly nothing of it. Except the fear on his ult and the lock on feature. Still both is so badly done. I think they should focus a lot more on things like the lock on and some new more gadgety stuff to make him seem more like a robotic abomination stuffed with technology.

Visually wise there is a lot of room for both elements of being a cyborg but also somewhat ugly/horror looking. I actually like these two concepts here, has a lot of the current Urgot just modernized and more cyborg looking: http://img15.deviantart.net/1719/i/2016/134/7/3/urgot_update_ideas_by_drugsforrobots-da2g6lo.jpg http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1439233786/UrrrgotVUExploration.jpg

I really hope they find a way to relaunch Urgot at some day. He deserves it.

I think a lot of the focus on champion "theme" and "fantasy" lately, like in the Mage Update, is interesting.

In a way it's a really good thing. You get champions who play like what you'd imagine they would play like. Case in point, Sion. Pre-Rework Sion, for those of you who weren't around for it, was a weird champ who could build AP and have two good moves or built AD and have his other 2 be good. AP was the more popular one. So you had this character who was just kind of a ball of abilities that didn't really combo into eachother or anything. The only thing "undead juggernaut"y about him was really his Passive, which was...garbage. Post rework Sion has moves that clearly combo into eachother, his passive fits his theme, and his playstyle fits his story really well, he charges in with little care as to his own survival, he smashes, he bellows, he crushes. It's really damn good at making him feel like this crazy undying colossus.

But there are downsides, I think, as well. If we're trying to make sure absolutely everything about a champion fits their "fantasy", well, Garen's ult is weird, where did that giant sword come from? Why does Thresh, the sadist who just wants to torture everyone, have a W totally dedicated to saving people? And I'm not saying Garen's ult or Thresh's W are bad. They're pretty significant and famous parts of their kits. Some things can just happen because "gameplay reasons". It gets back into the age old "Why does Corki buy boots?" or "How do you hide Cho in the brush?"

So when it comes to Urgot, I honestly think him having a strange kit and look is okay. What Urgot is is some kind of horrific blending of Zaunite high tech weapons and Noxian military training and pride. He's got a variety of tools he can use to fight with, but he still goes in short range, he's a Noxian, he wants the glory of seeing his target go down. So he's got the shield and the Ult to support that, with the Corrosive Charges and Acid Hunters to play around with his "tech" theme. I actually think he's pretty good thematically. If anything, I think more focus on his personality would be interesting. Urgot is clearly in CONSTANT pain. "Eternal life, endless torture" and all that. Maybe something on his passive like "Gains AD as he takes damage" or something to add in that "Pain" element could be neat? I'm not a champ designer.

Overall though, I've always liked Urgot's look and style, honestly. He's a bit outdated, but I'd rather see him get a Cassiopeia level rework, not a Sion level one.

I really feel bad for the poor guy. He's not that popular, people don't like using him, and Sion doesn't want to hang out with him anymore. Just listen to one of his quotes: http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/ab/Sion.jokeUrgot02.ogg/revision/latest?cb=20140927044237

Urgot's not that bad. People just don't know how to play as him. He does counter certain champions like Akali and his ultimate is excellent crowd control material to not only prevent escapes but to aid allies in need of rescuing. If an enemy Yasuo was using his ultimate on an ally, Urgot could just stop him immediately. I also tried some unique builds and they pay off, like using item 3053 and item 3156 . I mostly find him as a team player though. With armor reduction, crowd controls, and distant missiles, that benefits the team offense. With offensive items that shield him from all incoming attacks, Karthus can barely finish him off. It happens to me all the time when I play as him.

I thought Urgot was killed by Garen when attempted to execute J4.

Edit: and then remade.
