Let's Talk Cheerful Characters

Riot makes very good cheery characters in the game. Zoe is cute, her VO is adorable and obnoxious, and she's very lighthearted and silly. Ivern, Lulu, and Zac are very similar in this regard, and they have very fun personalities that are refreshing to see after all the dark characters in the game.

That said, I seek to understand why Riot has difficulty letting characters simply be light and carefree. Zoe, for instance, nukes a town for fun. Ivern, despite being the resident Bob Ross character, used to be a murderous brigand who tried to destroy a sacred tree after carving a brutal path through Ionia. Zac's parents, the people who adopted and loved him, died horrible deaths, leaving him alone in the dank pipes of Zaun. Lulu is completely sociopathic, and thinks that turning kids into flora and fauna for games is "fun." None of the cheerful characters in League are actually truly cheerful. They're all tarnished with these awful flaws and horrible atrocities in their past, and it completely contradicts the fun and peppiness they're portraying in the game.

Braum, so far, is the only instance of a silly, carefree character in the game without some dark, awful event in his past. So I'd like to see Riot take a break for a while from giving fun characters such dark pasts. It's fine, now and again to have a dark moment in someone's past. But when almost every recent character who's currently cheery and peppy is hiding something sadistic and homicidal in their closets, it starts to become clichéd and unintuitive in terms of story telling. Zac, for instance, was very much a richer character because he had living parents to go home to - it was unique and showcased a certain kind of love that you don't see a lot in games. Having dead parents now doesn't enrich him as a character, and makes you feel sad for someone who's such a goofy, fun character. Ivern, similarly could have worked wonderfully as just being this perpetually happy and oblivious nature spirit wandering the world, so tainting his backstory with being a former murderer detracts heavily from the myth and persona he gives us in game.

This leads me around to an upcoming carefree set of characters - Nunu and Willump. They have light lore at the moment that isn't that developed, but it does give us a bit of a heartwarming story of a boy befriending a yeti and becoming unlikely friends. I'd like to see this developed, without plunging them into the darkness. Riot has shown us with Braum that they can be capable of cheery characters without dark pasts, so it's time to go back to that with Nunu and Willump. People are rich and diverse, and while perfect happy stories aren't typically that deep or intriguing, against a backdrop like League's expansive lore, such stories are foils and give us a view that we don't see a lot in the game. The game's very dark in terms of the approach to the story telling, so bring some light in to make the dark's richer and give us a little happiness to go with once in a while.

Because of Riot's obsession with "grey" writing as well as this guy in Riot's higher chain of command in narrative who seem to be very convinced that a good story can not have any neutral or positive character, and so we end up with this, all of the characters are just different shades of black.

Every character now must be angry or seeking revenge over something, enlightened or well disciplined characters must be turned into moody and broken emos who's got a stigma, and even the cheeriest of characters all have a twist of being secretly super evil, insane, or at least related to it in some way.

There are only like 3 characters in the entire game atm who we can say for certain are actually in a good state of mind and outlook.

It is very, very boring and uninspired.

Taliyah imo is actually a rather big stand out for what you're after really.

She has living parents, a home, a cheerful attitude.

Sure she's unsure of herself and her VO is a little bland for some people with all of the philosphy. This is mostly due to her relation to Yasuo (however she actually inverts a lot of his negative quotes to be positive or self-referential.)

But she laughs at herself and is impressed by herself. Her past isn't riddled with patricide or misery.

Her past is actually very positive. Her tribe accepted and loved her for her powers. Even standing up when she doubted herself, but letting her go when she felt it was good for her to.

I think Galio and Rammus also fall into your description of "lighthearted without a dark past", so I don't think it is as bad as you make it out to be. And stories come along with conflicts oftenly, just having a dude who is just joyful all the time and has never known any struggle gets boring soon, especially if you want several characters for that trope.

Life is never only rainbows, sun and cloud with full of colorful butterflies. Same as it is never only darkness, pain and despair.

We can see goodness even in some evil characters.

Evelynn, even though she is super malicious, she tried empathy, tried to positive emotions. And she knows she causes pain. She knows she is evil. But she can't live without it. It definitely doesn't redempt what she does, but It is still goodness in a character that was supposed to be completely evil, full of darkness.

Zed is evil, but he believes he is doing what is right. And he some good actions like protecting his country against Noxus Invasion and even having truce for a while with Kinkou Order, working with Shen to stop Jhin etc. He also saved a child from death, Kayn.

What Aatrox does is terrible, but he doesn't do that because he enjoys it, but because he thinks there is no other way. He was also benevolent in the past.

Having no darkness in life is harder than having no light in life anyway.

I feel like a lot of people here are conflating tragedy and conflict with "edginess." Zac, Galio, and Zoe are all cheerful characters. Poppy and Tristana are also really straightforward plucky and optimistic. I would argue Lux and Taliyah fit pretty neatly in there as well. They're not "faux-cheerful" because something happened to them; something happened to them that either shaped them or drives their current goals. That's just basic story-telling.

That's like saying Aang from Avatar the Last Airbender isn't cheerful because all the Airbenders are dead.

Lulu is completely sociopathic, and thinks that turning kids into flora and fauna for games is "fun."

I think, she did turn them back after they were done playing hide and seek and kids loved the magics. It was their parents who told her to leave.

The way I see it is everyone has struggles with life or hang ups. ANd when it comes to the antasy of what makes this character so special or unique, having them be a mary sue who is happy 24/7 isn't really all that fun. Taliyah was mentioned before as a very positive person. She is! She doesn't have a dark past or anything of that nature. Her backstory is, in all honesty, one that a lot of people fail to be able to come up with purely because "kill the parents" and "edgy for the sake of edgy".

Sure, she wound up being escorted with Noxians and was lied to and they wanted to use her powers, but guess what? She escaped with little casualties in the mix. When she refused, they abandoned her, simple. She found Yasuo who trained her, and her biggest trouble is Azir. The thing is, characters need human events and things that make them tick. And some characters need more freedom than others.

Zac works as a vigilante slime monster who is being hunted down by a chembaron. While his parents living is unique, it is not practical. At the very least, them STAYING IN ZAUN is impractical. Okay, you survived the first attack, but what about the next? And the next? They could be undersiege to the point where Zac's story revolves around protecting his parents instead of protecting the city. For a lot of characters to be themselves, they need to have the situational freedom of not being tied down by things that would hold them back, and if they do have it, it's either something that doesn't 100% impede decision making, or it's something so ingrained in their story that if that one bond is threatened, everything is.

Taliyah's bond is to her family that is nowhere around her. Until they physically appear, she has the freedom to fight and move around to make choices; however, her decisions are made to find out how to find and rescue them. Imagine Zac's instance. What freedom does he have to move around if his parents are both PHYSICALLY present and in PHYSICAL danger. Not only will his decision making be revolved around them, but so will the imprisonment of constantly watching over them. With that being said, the worse thing with Zac's loss of his parents is...he loss his parents. The story is roughly the same except there are two less side characters he is interacting with.

I think, we need more older cheerful characters. When we see a young or a child-like character, who is always cheerful and optimistic, we can't help but think "Just wait for it, dearie". But when it's someone older or even elderly, it's more like "Yes, they have seen some shit, but they still enjoy living, what's your excuse?".

I feel like the only character that is both lighthearted and fun without having neither a dark background nor an annoying personality is Braum.

Ivern could have easily been just as good but they insisted on implementing this highly eDgY dark story instead of making him a friendly spirit. That was just bad writing in my opinion. Same for Zoe. They created an obnoxiously annoying cheerful kiddie character to please all the fans of KAWAIIIIIII characters but then tried so hard to give her a "serious" background by making her an apsect of Targon and all of that stuff.

As for Zac, I feel like it's pretty much the usual "superhero"-backgroundstory.

And in the case of Lulu, I'll have to defend Riot. Fairies are often said to be pretty mischievous and even violent. Not because they are necessarily evil but because they lack empathy and an understanding of the human nature. So Lulu is actually pretty well written.

i was gonna say Lux... with Ivern its about his growth and the potential connection between man and nature Rakan is pretty chill what about some of the other yordles they are all pretty chill Janna, Wukong

AbiwonKenabi8/3/2018, 5:39:15 PM1 votes

I think with Ivern, it sort of works. He's practically a completely different being from the original Freljord Ivern, having learned over many thousands of years the errors of his ways, and taking many thousands more to do more Ivern-y things as we know him today. I imagine at this point he's done more positive than negative, and barely remembers the barbarian he formerly was. So its overall a net positive.

Lulu, I imagine, is going to get major changes. She's from Bandle City but finds another world with the pixies...which doesn't work if Bandle is already another world...so it'd be like finding another world within another world...it needs changes to make sense. So chances are she might be more net positive as well. After all, I think Lulu's thing is just that she thinks very differently from anyone else, even other Yordles. She's League's "weird one": strange powers that she uses in strange ways, says weird stuff just for the sake of it, but ultimately doesn't mean any harm. She might get along with Ivern pretty well actually.

I hate what they've done with Zoe. Her quotes and animations are delightful, but literally that one story ruins her for me. I get that she's supposed to be unaware and naive in a childish way, but they could have gone about it to make her more likable and endearing, which I think was ultimately their goal. Have her be surprised at the reactions from her nuking the village: "why is everyone sad? What happened?" Something more than blatant apathy. She comes off as more annoying, frustrating and kind of scary in that story than funny and strange yet powerful, like I think they were going for.

I was sad that Zac doesn't get parents anymore. I thought with Ekko a similar thing; I liked that his parents were alive because there was really no reason for them not to be and dead parents as a motivator is completely overdone. Even just within League.

Taliyah, Lux, maybe Ezreal and even Illaoi to some extent all come to mind as more upbeat characters that aren't also dark for darkness' sake. Lux and Taliyah have their struggles with their powers, but overall are positive and hopeful, and want to do good. Ezreal is cocky and goes on adventures, not much dark about him (yet). And while Illaoi isn't any champion of light or hope, she's supportive and confident with her god behind her. I can't see her being dour except in extreme circumstances.

I'm sure there are a few other examples, but I do agree that Riot is tending towards mean and evil these days. I personally would also like some more quiet, muted or even introverted characters; most characters are boisterous and loud (Galio even becoming less melancholic and more loud with his update), the last more quiet Champion was Swain with his calculating, intelligent ways. And before that I can't even remember. The Lamb half of Kindred maybe?

NekoniClaws7/26/2018, 3:28:27 PM1 votes

I very much agree there's this HUGE absence of 'good guys'. I feel like Riot's creative team have taken a pact not to create a 'good guy' with a happy backstory because that's so 'unrealistic' and 'uninteresting' but... it's not.

There are plenty of real, INTERESTING, people in real life whose parents weren't mudered, whose villages weren't blown up and who don't secretly kill for fun. Like you said- Zac's older backstory! Why are his parents dead now?

And honestly, league has these.. outright miserable / angry characters that I hate listening to. I don't play Morgana unless forced to because listening to her voicelines and watching her slump around... omg. Get me on Rakan. Or Thresh! (Thresh is REALLY enjoying himself) I literally need positive characters to play the game. I'd like to see a few more 'pure' ones around who aren't tortured.

And -sweats- -- as a Leona main I worry about her. I know she's had tragedy and she's nice, but Targonians are turning out to be a super twisted, evil bunch, and sun worship is related to a LOT of messed up stuff... I just want my lovely motherly caring tank lady...

What about Braum ? He seems pretty regular but still very cheerful.

Smart Girl7/26/2018, 6:00:46 AM1 votes

i actually hate cheerful champions they are annoying and off putting i want more serious champions it seems like all they are doing is making cheerful "kawaii" champions and its annoying.....i really hope they stop.

Glad you pointed out how their rewriting of zac's past ruined some of his character, and agree there's a lacking positivity without dangerous or mental issues.
