Darkin now and then

When Aatrox came out 5 years ago we were told that Darkin are mysterious figures that randomly appear at wars and ALWAYS fight with the losing (or outnumbered) side. No one really knew what they were what they wanted and the only Darkin we knew then was Aatrox. We knew what he looked like what he did what skills he has but still he was a mystery , never revealing enough. Even his VO he only has "inspirational" quotes for the losing side talking about glory in victory how peace is a lie and those who die in battle are remembered for ever. And the tone of his voice is really convincing smooth and calm wise words like he really likes to inspire you to fight and win no matter the cost. And we only knew that nothing about his origin about his race we knew nothing. And that is what made him special the mystery that he is. The theories that people made up about what is his purpose what he truly is etc. and some my self included said that he is the weapon not the demon like creature. And people really found that funny. What I want to say is that the mystery about a forgotten race that only songs and tales tell about them is that made Aatrox something different from the other champions. And now... We got Rhaast an angry one who wants to bring death to all humans. Okay that is fine we need diversity we don't want all the Darkin to have the same personality...and today we got the new Aatrox. And now he is another big bad that wants to destroy that world and everything in it...Its truly shocking what he became from what he was.. To me and many others Aatrox sounds like one of the Rioters that was working on his rework brought their children at work to help around the voice lines...He has become a stereotypical villain. And what is worse is that this looks like all darkin follow the same formula of big angry dudes that hate humans and want to kill and destroy everything...How original... How sad..I'm afraid that this might be actual ruination of a great character and death to a great potencial story about a fairly interesting race of creatures ..

Lets not forget the popular argument that the Darkin are meant to be "the Horsemen" equivalents in Runeterra. But the whole theory relied on the content from Aatrox's old lore, because it was in that where him- therefore other Darkin as well sounded more biblical/primordial in power, that they could impose and manipulate destructive impulses on massive numbers of people.

Yet none of that was even remotely present in either Kayn or particularly Varus lore updates. None the less, the Horsemen theory really solidified into a lot more people's minds, what is now in hindsight a complete misconception of what the Darkin actually are. Of which seems to be living weapons for war (obvious that spirals out further, but that's what the Darkin start out as).

Your thread here argues for the archetype presented in every aspect of old Aatrox except the most important- the kit. His kit never outwardly personified a war god, rather a violent hack'n slash masochist who could return from death to continue the massacre. I dont believe that "war god" Aatrox was the more suitable/ logic direction for him based on the surface nature of his kit, I also don't believe literal war god would have meshed with established Darkin lore either.

What can I say

If i went to a planet to fight, and ended up joining the inhabitants of that planet to defend them from a bigger threat, and when all was over, the only payment I got was anihilation of almost every member of my species, and then getting trapped inside my own weapon for centuries, totally alone.... The moment I got out, not only would i be incredibly pissed, but I would use every amount of my energy and power to make those betrayer pay with blood and tears, every one of them, and there would be no mercy to be had, as they also didn't had any mercy when they erased their defenders.

I don't know, I might be an edgy stereotypical villain, and you might be able to keep your cool and just shrugh the situation off when you finally became free after so much time in solitude, but for me, they made Darkins more relatable instead of being a huge ? sign, and thats why I love the new Aatrox (although the accent still sounds weird to me)

AHH here we go again..and i thought that the varus situation would be the last .

1)The old lore of Aatrox was written in a time where leagues lore werent yet fully defiend.Thats why it was vague or as you called it ''mysterious''.

  1. Old Aatrox was the epitomy of a blund character..the only thing we knew about him was that he loved war..yea ,how interesting! He had literally zero personality....motivations? unknown. Origins ? unknown. The problem witht the mysterious bloodthirsty war loving monster trope is that by its own can not make a character interesting.

It is funny how you are trying to bash on new aatrox by calling him ''another big bad that wants to destroy that world and everything in it'' while the old one was exactly that minus anything remotely interesting!

  1. If you had read the new mini bio before writting your psot you whould have realized that aatrox is not evil for the sake of evil.**Actually he used to be a guardian of runeterra! ** "Once honored defenders of Shurima against the Void, Aatrox and his brethren would eventually become an even greater threat to Runeterra, and were defeated only by cunning mortal sorcery.''

  1. From his voice lines we understand that A)The targonians brought him to his current state 2) the void may not was initially corrupted (vel koz line)

  2. His voice has now character and can express different emotions ( he can for example make hilarious jokes) his old voice was a generic demon edge lord .
