@Riot, What Makes A Champion Different From A Random Citizen From Runeterra?

Something?

Nothing?

Back in the days of the Institute of War (I hope I don't get downvotes for referencing the original LoL lore) champions were people that had special status within Runeterra. They fought battles for the Institute of War in return for favors and perks. Usually champions were participating in the League of Legends to further their own personal political agenda.

It created some incredibly interesting story concepts.

Post Riot's Lore retcon, being a champion doesn't seem to mean anything anymore.

@any Rioter's out there, I'd really be interested in hearing what you consider a modern day champion to be?

Edit: Why do Riot fanboys hate one pretty much every legitimate criticism of the Retcon these days?

Player feedback via constructive criticism helps keep RIot in touch with their playerbase.

And if enough players show that they care about the lore of Runeterra, maybe Riot will invest in it as much as they used to.

Well there's some easy criteria:

  • Are they influential in Runeterra in some way? Nationally, globally and locally are all fine.
  • Have they achieved something incredible?
  • Are they perhaps a unique entity with some special purpose?
  • Are they immensely powerful, either in a political, physical or magical sense?
  • Are they reputable in some way?

There's probably even more I could add, but you get the idea. Every champion in the game fits in to one or more of those criteria.

The main feature of champions is that they're really freaking powerful. Even the weakest-looking champions are more powerful than all humans.

I imagine them to have achieved a level of mastery over whatever they work on beyond that of many in their field. For example, Quinn is a scout, but not just any scout. Her incredible bond with Valor has made her an indispensible part of Demacia's forces. Her exploits have made her a household name.

from what i can tell champions are eithe rlegends and powerful entities in the universe/runeterra(bard, aatrox, morde?, etc), or they are just powerful warriors/mages

Nothing wrong on referencing the old lore, but honestly even the old lore had hella faults. Champions wer enot defined for what they were or for the capabilities they had, but because they were picked by the IoW. Usually this picking happens for said reasons, but other times is pretty much random, like Lulu and Amumu compared to Ashe, Swain and Veigar.

At least now champions are people that are "remarkable people worth playing", in a very metagamist sense, rather than "people that just happens to be picked".
