Faey Should Be Okay

So there's a new story out, and you can find it here: https://universe.leagueoflegends.com/en_US/story/bow-and-kunai/

In the story, our protagonist Faey

BIG SPOILER WARNING

Loses one of her legs below the knee fighting an angry tree spirit. Which leads to this sad paragraph:

"What does it matter now? Faey’s lips were trembling. She knew everything was over. Mayym had made her assessment—that this protégé had been ruined. All the training, wasted. All her aspirations destroyed. She would never rise to become an acolyte, or be anything to the order but a burden."

Putting aside the toxic idea of disabled people existing only as burdens for a moment, we see Mayym reassure Faey that she WILL find a way to let her walk again if she has to search all Ionia for it.

But literally all she needs is a peg leg. Ionia's supposed to be all enlightened and stuff, no way are they so backwards about disability that all but one person will just give up at something as easily addressed as limb loss.

And it's not like it would upset the balance. The Kinkou already used fallen wood earlier in the story to make mobile huts. Just take a sturdy stick and rig up a peg for the poor girl. Or ask the trees to grow her one. She might not be able to scamper up trees as well, but she could sure as heck handle walking. Faey could easily be a fantastic stationary volley archer even with reduced mobility.

So if anyone in the Kinkou has more than two brain cells to rub together, which they've shown that they do, Faey's gonna be all right.

Sure, you can replace a missing leg, but nothing can replace motherly love that Akali never had :'(

But keep going after that.

“No,” Mayym said, voice broken. “No, you did not.” She held Faey’s shoulders and looked into her eyes with fierce intensity. “There must be a way to make you walk again. If we must search every corner of Ionia and beyond to find it, that’s what we will do. Under Shen’s leadership, Kennen and I—and the rest of the Kinkou—will find a way. I will continue to train you, and make sure you become an archer never before seen in the history of both realms.”

There's no burden here. They try. The problem is that you can't just give her a peg. Since she's an archer, she has to be able to get into some tricky terrain to get a perch. They need to make a prosthetic that can do that.

I think part of it is just the emotional backlash. I mean, she literally JUST lost her leg, and its a traumatic event no matter what. I agree that after they calm down, it shouldn't be AS big of a deal.

This is the same universe where you can completely replace your heart and basically every other body part with a near perfect magic/tech prosthetic. It may not exist in Ionia, but surely such a spiritual land isn't set back by something like this? I'm reminded of that one master from the Doctor Strange film that can still perform the magic with a missing hand, proving to Strange that its not a physical setback but rather mental or spiritual. Some lesson like that would feel right at home in Ionia.

Luckily that paragraph was from Faye so at least it can just be thrown with the "oh god, shes hates me, i failed" bit. so at least there's that.

but yeah i can see her easliy getting a bonsai tree for a prosthetic leg.

It's bold of you to assume the Kinkou has more than two collective brain cells.

Putting aside the toxic idea of disabled people existing only as burdens for a moment,

She’s a thirteen year old who is raised in a military-religious group. I think it’s understandable that she is questioning her value hours after losing her leg.

do you not realize it takes more then a sturdy stick to give her back what she has been working for since she was 5? Yes having a peg leg would help her get around, but it's not going to help much when she needs nimble movements and sturdy footing.

Forest spirits could always make her part animal, replace that missing leg with a hoof.

as long as this doesn't turn into ANOTHER energy champ thats also for some reason an adc with spammable abilities its a cool story

also nice to see how Akali used to be and why she hates Zed

I'm fairly sure Faey is not going to be the upcoming lore Champion this year, or any Champion this year, but the fact that Riot dedicates an entire story to her does make me feel that she's going to be an important character later on. Someone pointed out that she could should up in Legends of Runeterra, or in another game by Riot, or even an upcoming Zed comic issue.

Personally, I actually think it's interesting that Faey seems to have this rivalry/enemy relationship going on with Akali - could go down some interesting paths. And with the leg thing, I think eventually she should be fine - but at the moment, she was probably pretty traumatized and shocked. At at very least, I think Ionia can find a way to help Faey walk and fight again, and if she's ever added to the League, it would be pretty cool, as we don't have that many amputees as Champions off the top of my head.

Issue here is that the Kinkou has no brains, and they have the most isolationist and hardline conservationist mindsets you could possibly find.

If they had brains they´d have kept an eye on Zed when he got a part of the shadow power in the first place, if they had brains they´d have sent scouts to monitor that group of bandit guys whom they knew were walking around the area and they would also have worked a bit harder at establishing fields to grow crops so their own children would not starve.

They would also not let their kids roam around with weapons while hungry which lead to the attack on the bear that they were not supposed to kill, bear only escaped due to luck really.

Hells they knew that the bear was acting like it was escaping from something scary when it appeared in that forest, still end up surprised when a huge ass demon pops out not long after, the only type of thing that would scare the bear.

And i am just sitting here like what about scouts? What about some manner of demon protection? What about having someone keep an eye on those kids you taught to fight when there are bandits and demons roaming around? But nah, that happy lil order seems to just be perfectly happy in letting nature take it´s course.

For the most skilled ninjas in the land they have absolutely 0 vigilance, 0 common sense and heck they do not even follow their own dang codex....and they call Zed´s group a bunch of missfits.....a bunch of misfits who survived a war and have the good sense to listen to orders and not act rashly.

. . .

Honestly this story made every adult in the kinkou order look like an utter moron from my perspective, the kids were good and creative in their trick to scare the bandits and quick enough to react to the demon but the adults?

I cant be the only one who thinks not having any guards around is beyond stupid in their situation, can i? Especially since Kennen told them that the botherhood bandit like gang was roaming around.

And that they knew the demon population was having an upsurge.
