The Mystery Behind the Music Track - Voxos Samus (my theory on whose champion its the theme for)
You must be wondering, what is Voxos Samus?
It's a music track that's found on the official League of Legends Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/leagueoflegends/voxos-samus
It was uploaded 3 years ago on Soundcloud, probably sometime during or before September 2012, since this thread was made around that time, wondering what or who the track was for. This track was never used in any LoL media, even though it was uploaded to Soundcloud.
This was back when Riot just started uploading their music tracks for easy download (it was uploaded after Daylight's End, the Pulsefire Ezreal theme etc.)
However the track is actually older. The earliest upload I've found is on Christian Linke's (a Riot music composer) YouTube channel.
Note that he uploaded nearly all the tracks on 27 October 2011, a year before some of the tracks were re-uploaded on the League of Legends Soundcloud. Another track - Sonic Awakening - was also uploaded on YouTube in 2011, but was also re-uploaded to Soundcloud in 2012.
Note also a track called Kalamanda's Hope. Kalamanda was only mentioned in the Journal of Justice stories leading up to the Dominion map's introduction, which was on September 26, 2011.
So the track _Kalamanda's Hope _ was made specifically for this event, but seemingly never used.
Except for the login theme, it appears that all the tracks that were uploaded to Christian Linke's YouTube channel were never actually used in any League of Legends or Riot Games' media after being made.
Which brings us back to Voxos Samus.
So what does that title mean? I had to do some digging, and there's still some leaps I have to make, but bear with me.
First up is 'Voxos', which is pretty clearly from the Latin root word 'vox', which means 'voice'. Simple enough.
'Samus' was tougher to decipher. It's not Latin, and it's the same name as a famous space bounty hunter. So I checked up on that. I get this:
The name Samus is the female variant of the name Seamus, which is Celtic for James, which means: "He who supplants."
So combine them and you get "Voice of the Supplanter/Usurper"
So now this is interesting. Which character/champion was in the process of 'supplanting/usurping' someone else during the time this track was being made?
Going back to the storyline behind the Dominion map. The Noxian Grand General Boram Darkwill died during the event, leaving a power vacuum at the top of Noxus.
was highly active in this storyline, with how he was fighting with
over Kalamanda, and after Darkwill died, it paved the way for him to usurp the position of Grand General.
It took another year, but
finally did it, and he became the Grand General of Noxus. The Tyrant Swain skin was released on 23rd May 2012 to commemorate this event (along with the final issue of the Journal of Justice which was about him becoming Grand General).
So we know all the tracks were made by October 2011, and planned for events coming much later down the line. There was a track for the Kalamanda event, but it was ultimately unused. The Kalamanda event was part of the plotline that involves Swain supplanting Boram Darkwill in order to become Grand General a year later, which was commemorated with his Tyrant Swain skin being released in May of 2012.
Voxus Samus roughly translates to "Voice of the Supplanter/Usurper". I.e. "Voice of Swain" who was supplanting Darkwill for the position of Grand General.
I believe when the Tyrant Swain skin was released, it was meant to come with Voxus Samus as the paired theme. Much like how Miss Fortune's Captain Fortune skin has its own theme because of the Bilgewater lore event. That's why it was re-uploaded to the Soundcloud, because Riot was thinking about finally using the track.
However for reasons unknown, this ultimately didn't happen. My own theory is that Riot found the skin and theme didn't fully match; or that the skin wasn't to the level that warranted a theme (at that point in time, Riot only had theme songs for Ultimate-level skins or new champions). Or possibly, because they already considered a bigger rework for
, they held off on using the theme until that rework.
Anyway, that's my theory.
Also for those saying Samus is a _female _ name variant. It is, but like how they randomly paired Gaelic with Latin, I think the variant Samus was chosen for aesthetic reasons, because "Voxos Seamus" sounds kinda silly, ditto for "Voxos James".
