2018 Lore Tournament - 14th December: Then, Teeth vs Frozen Hearts

Another day, another thread. The unofficial Lore Tournament continues, and we have a rather big change: It turns out we missed a story. "A Different Hunger", while having its release date listed as March 2017, was indeed released in 2018. So, we had to change the original plan Bioluminescence made to fit it in. I also want to announce/clarify that I will try to post a new thread around 7 AM PST / 3 PM UTC and lock the old one 2 hours later (9 AM PST / 5 PM UTC). This should give everyone enough time to vote.

#2018 Lore Tournament: Day 9

With the new schedule, a new challenger is approaching every day! Today that means we pick up Frozen Hearts, which already won the very first battle, and let it battle against Then, Teeth, a story with a very unique style of writing as well as a new setting. Coincidentally, it was also written by Matthew Dunn, who seemed to struggle in both yesterday's post and the one before. We'll see how it plays out for this one...

Then, Teeth by Matthew Dunn Pyke remembers. He remembers the sailor's blue eyes. She was on the list. Pyke remembers the captain. He is on the list. Pyke remembers - and then... teeth.

Frozen Hearts by David Slagle Nunu and his mother Layka are departing again. Why must they go as the snow settles? To bring joy and hope to other villages, because the Freljord is cold and they bring warmth to all frozen hearts.

[EDIT] Voting is finished! Frozen Hearts defeats yet another challenger (29 to 20 votes) and moves on to the 22nd

Pykes tale was creepy and fucked up.

For me? Frozen Hearts. Nunu is just too adorable, and his mother's wisdom is so precious. I hope Willump can help the cute little kid find his mother again and his happy ending. Sorry Pyke. Your story is cool, but I need to know that we'll know more about what's actually going on there for me to be quite as impacted.

By the way, didn't you want to switch A Different Hunger and The Eye In The Abyss? So they have more even matchups.

Yikes. I'm not sure how i'm gonna choose between The Black Powder Plot and The True and Ghastly Tale of the Beast of Boleham Tower. The former is fantastic because of its intrigue and seriousness and display of Swain's intelligence, and the latter is great because of the opposite.

Not a lopsided matchup, I like them both a lot, but hard to choose because there are few points to compare the stories directly. Pyke has this simultaneous sense of being a brutal, insane murderer in his own right, while seeming to be manipulated by something more murderous and tireless than even he is. Nunu is given here a backdrop of amazing parenting and incredible love that we have not seen in the League universe up until now; this is both what makes Nunu who he is and defines his goals entirely: both of them are amazing and very complete color stories for their champions.

I think Nunu wins, because Pyke's story didn't dig as deep, didn't touch the essence of the character quite as deeply as Nunu's story did. I also think Nunu just has more character by design so far, I guess we'll see where they go in the future!

edit: wow, definitely not lopsided, just voted and it's ten and ten so far

It's a shame this isn't getting as much attention as when it was an official tournament.

It was such a fun idea to have galore tournament where people could discuss their favourites and how they compare.
