"What is the worth of a soul?"

Between Thresh's penchant for collecting souls and Kalista's introduction as a figure to whom Runeterrans may be driven to pledge their souls, I find myself wondering just what the nature of the soul is in the world Riot has created. Valoran seems to lack any major religion, with the few cults we're aware of being of minimal size or influence, and we certainly haven't been introduced to any concept of an afterlife beyond throwaway lines of dialogue and the nightmare offered by the Isles, so what exactly is the soul and how do the people of Runeterra perceive them?

Beyond that: What happens to a person's soul when they die? Shouldn't religion have more of a presence if souls are a proven commodity? Do most people even believe in the existence of souls?

Do note that the only known interaction with souls are Shadow Isles champions. Which means most of Runeterra probably doen't even know that such a thing is possible, let alone the 'what happens after death' aspect. Some proof of this lies in Kalista's lore. The woman who sacrificed herself didn't know what she would have to give up until it came to it, and its safe to say most cases would be like that.

This certainly brings up some very good points

I am atheist, and honestly, I think souls in league of legends are basically the consciousness of a person outside of her body that manifest itself I really don't know why, or how. For me they basically means power in league. Kalista gets stronger with souls, so do Thresh ( I think). Basically, soul is a form of increasing said champion power ( it looks like in league at least )

I mean, other champions know about souls. Maybe they're like super villains almost, people know they exist but they hardly experience or see them, but when they do it's very terrifying and dramatic.

I have this theory, that in Runeterra, anything not physical is fueled by magic, like when a baby is born, he is physically generated inside his mother, but his soul, the core of his magic that will give him "sentience" will be drawn from Runeterra's magic.

When someone dies, his/her soul would return to the "earth" and restrengthen the magic of Runeterra, becoming mixed in the flow of ethereal magic energy. But there is ofcourse, situations like Thresh and Kalista, where the soul is absorved and strengthens the champion.

If, souls are based on magic, then there is already a religion. Everyone believes in magic in runeterra, from the most physical of champions like Darius, to the lich Karthus.

Well, long ago, the Shadow Isles were a mythical place of stories. Nowadays, I think everyone knows that they exist, saying souls don't exist is like saying Thresh doesn't exist.
