Ionia is, far and away, the most interesting continent/area in lore now.

I'm dead serious and my favorite region is Piltover.

Ionia has become the most fascinating region right under our noses. We see the strife of war wrought upon an otherwise peaceful nation. The noxus-ionia war was a powderkeg that allowed individuals who had grown unhappy with Ionia's stagnation to rise. Not only that but every champion is now affected by this conflict in some way or another. The radical, changing ideals of the world has both people openly embracing it (Zed, Akali), trying to encorporate it into Ionia's mantra (Karma) or those who are so devastated and are unsure about where to go (Shen, Yi)

In addition, most of Ionia's lore progression ties back to the old lore. It's not a 100% total retcon, it feels like the organic growth of these characters. Akali leaving Shen due to his indecision and Shen grappling with the world changing around him. Zed's "haha fuck order" isn't just detesting the old ways but his sense of justice being shaken by a questionable decision made by his master and brother. Karma being torn between her past lives staunch tradition and her current avatar's personal view on Ionia. (Although Karma needed a tweak) And I'm not even getting into the race-relations with the vastaya, Riven's story or Yasuo's mentorship with Taliyah to atone for what happened in the lore.

Kudos Riot. Out of all the regions Ionia is likely the most well-developed and interesting zone you've ever tackled. Well done.

That's entirely your opinion though.

Eastern Southern Continent developed better lore in my eyes. Mount Targon, Shurima and the Void, all together and related.

Aspects are the reason Sun Disc was built, so it could shape mortal flesh to something divine, so they could be guardians of Runeterra in its darkest times against the unknowable nothingness.

Darkins have occured because of this 3 regions.

Let's look at the struggles and events of Eastern Southern Continent.

  • Rise of Shurima

  • Clash of the Ascended

  • Potential civil war in Shurima

  • Awakening of the Void Rift in Icathia,

  • Noxus Invades in Shurima, which is unacceptable for Azir

  • For some reason, too many Aspects being present

  • Aurelion Sol's crown getting weaker

  • Reunion of Darkins (at least for Varus and his sister)

  • Desperate search of Marai for moonstone

Not even even counted Kumungu (not like we have any idea what's going on here anyway).

I believe Eastern Southern Continent is more diverse, more events and has more potential to cause catastrophic events.

I agree, Shadow Isles/Noxus/Void is the best.

Noxus seems more interesting IMO, with all the creatures/beasts/animals in the region, hundreds of cultures indoctrinated into one, a society that values strength above all, where a peasant can become a leader. Ionia is just naturey stuff (ew)

I think the void and shadows isles are the most interesting. Too bad Riot doesn't do any lore for them.

We have a similar taste in lore.

I love the detail and all, but my favourite out of all is by far the Shadow Isles and any story connected to it. I love the ambiance and the mood of it, plus it allows me to play around with it, as seen here.

But I understand that they provide focus for what feels the best and what most people are curious about. As "LEgend of Rammus" says, it really is a shame they didn't update those places in a while. But still, I'm in no way complaining, love me some Ionia :)

Zaun is the most interesting to me:

Warwick, Zac TwitchDrMundo Urgot - Genetically/Chemically engineered abominations Blitzcrank, Orianna,Viktor - Artificial and Cyborg beings Ekko,Singed,Ziggs - Geniuses both good and evil Janna - Good natured Spirit Jinx- horribly ugly yet inexplicably popular champion

Ionia just feels too cookie cutter, typical asian themed fantasy land. There is nothing really innovative about its story to me when compared to places like Zaun or Bilgewater.

No love for Targon.

I prefer Shurima. It has a ton of developed lore and history that have shaped the world, mysterious myths like Rammus and Amumu, and competing factions (Targon, the remaining darkin, Xerath, Azir, the Noxians, and the Void). Icathia is just amazing. I'm dying to finally get some modern day progression for Azir and what's occurred since Bloodline.

Ionia and Shurima have gotten a lot of focus recently but I'm hoping for some good modern day Shadow Isles or Demacia lore in the future. Those places haven't been updated in a long time, the last new Demacian champ we got was Lucian in 2013, and he wasn't exactly a Demacia lore dump. With some focus, I think other factions can be just as great.

Just waiting for them to give Shadow Isles some more love tbh. Any region can be interesting with a bit of attention.

While I do agree that Ionia has become a lot more interesting(especially since it managed to set itself apart from being just "fantasy-japan"),I do feel like we're getting too many champs centerered around breaking traditions/taboos in order to fight Noxus Akali MasterYi Varus Zed Irelia LeeSin Jhin Kayn Karma

I mean don't get me wrong it makes sense that a lot of champions were affected by the noxus invasion in that way,I just wish we had more ionian champs from ionia that are more disconnected from the war/reacted to it differently.

Most interesting lore as well as the most banned champions
