So I decided to read up on Azir and Xerath's long lore, I'm confused

So is Xerath sorry that he betrayed Azir? Like his lore makes it seem like he is but in game his voice over all show he wants power and shit. I even looked at his ascension voice over and he seems like he wants power and even mocks Azir.

Am I missing something or is this how the lore is?

Keep in mind that Xeraths lore takes place before he ascended, got chained by a sarcophagus and entombed with a crocodile man for hundreds of years. I guess that could have had changed his personality to some extent.

Also there is the fact that his motives aren't that clear. Sure he wanted revenge on azir because azir didn't free him(he only freed xerath when it was too late to back down),but there would have been other ways to do that. It is likely that Xerath also took the ascension because he really wanted that power.

He had a little bit regret that didn't cause him to stop stealing ascension. He thinks what Azir did is what he always wanted but in other side it is too late, nothing can be cure for it. Anyway, he must be forget what Azir did and probably has no more regret about what he had done. 1 or 2 thousand years in a prison, he got mad.

In Xerath's story by the time they had gotten to that point, Xerath had long gone past the point of no return. He's totally committed to this act and even though Azir, at the very end, actually came through, Xerath just wasn't willing to back down. He had put his whole life in to stealing Ascension from the hands of those who kept him in chains, and he wasn't just gonna let it go now.

He wanted to be free and he wanted revenge on Azir for (as he thought) lying to him about letting him be free after so many years. He only regretted it the moment Azir freed all slaves as a surprise, when it was too late for him to stop it.

Currently he's nuts because being locked in a coffin, in a tomb with a humanoid alligator that locked you in there for 1000 (or more) years tends to have a negative effect on your sanity.

Azir isn't all that sane either if you think about it. Wakes up in a different time, sees his family destroyed in his memories and is unable to cry as he ascends. That can't be healthy in the mental department.
