Help me to understand this: if Kindred is death and Karthus is undeath...

then why is Mordekaiser the soon to be "Lord and/or Master of Death?"

Kindred is the one that goes around claiming souls afflicted with the Mark of the Kindred ( souls of those about to die ) right?

Karthus Is the one that goes around trying to make people undead, right?

Why is Mordekaiser then going to be the "Lord" or "Master" of death then? I'm honestly confused because even though Mordekaiser can get the spirits or something similar of those who have fallen to fight for him isn't it Karthus who actually grants permanent undeath? I suppose we'll need to see Mordekaiser's new lore before we can get any definitive answers. Still, does it not seem that, based on what I believe Kindred/Karthus do, it would leave very little room for Mordekaiser to have any significant part in it unless his new lore is earth-shattering ( and possibly broken ) in some way. Maybe Mordekaiser becomes the king of the Shadow Isles? Maybe Mordekaiser just becomes the master of Karthus? I'd love some insight into what is going on because I'd love to get a better understanding of the lore.

( By the way, please up-vote this post if you are as confused as I am. )

Karthus isn't exactly "undeath" personified or anything; he's like the pope of undeath. He sings its praises (literally), goes door to door handing out pamphlets... y'know, stuff like that.

Edit: This is what TacoTheKitten was replying to above. Y'know, in case you were reading this and wondering what was up with that.

Karthus is part of the Shadow Isles. He believes undeath is a gift and wishes to give it to all mortals. To gain undeath through Karthus is to join the undead, however to gain undeath through Mordekaiser is to become a slave to the Shadow Isles for eternity. He does not wish to "help" the living.

The only confirmed Shadow Isles character I can think of that has nothing to do with collecting souls would be Hecarim. For the rest it depends on the individual for whether or not they are actually interested in the well being of said souls.

Of course I'm not an expert on the Shadow Isles, however this is what I got from the lore when I read it.

Yorick : Don't mind me. I'm just digging some graves and digging up some Graves. Needed some one to smoke with.

"You give the dead purpose, Mordekaiser; I give them meaning." - Karthus

Mordekaiser gives the undead purpose. Their purpose is to serve the will of the Shadow Isles.

Karthus gives the undead meaning by preaching that undeath is an ascended state of existence.

Imagine if you will a dark crusade. Mordekaiser is the commander who gives each undead his purpose in the army. Karthus is the cleric who gives a meaning to their crusade.

Kindred is the personification of death. Or at least one form of it. They are like "Mother Nature" or "Father Time". Just the embodiment of a wild, nature force.

I think it's supposed to imply that he dominion over the realm of death, that he has imposed his will on deaht and those afflicted by it.

He does not die. He has defied death, mastered it and made it into his weapon.

He has even gone so far as to bend to his will those that die. Death, for Mordekaiser, is a tool and a weapon, the source of his power.

I think that's what they're going for. I don't necessarily agree, but I'd guess that's what Riot has in mind.

Morde is now the Iron Revenant

Does that mean Mordekaiser is the lord of Kindred? I'm also kind of confused...

The thing to remember about Morde is that he is the only champion in League who can forcibly make the undead. No other champion can do that; Yorick digs up dead bodies and re-animates them, Kalista absorbs souls in to herself, Thresh steals souls and Karthus guides people to undeath but doesn't directly make them undead; he holds sermon for folks to give themselves over to the Shadow Isles.

Mordekaiser lords over death in the sense that he can forcibly control souls and rip them from the living, enslaving them to his own will. That's something unique across all the beings we've seen in League, and is likely a major point in the grander scheme of the Shadow Isles story. I stand by my belief that Morde orchestrated the events that brought ruin to the isles, all for his own ends. Considering that we actually now SEE who death is in Runeterra I'd postulate that perhaps Morde, if I'm right and he did bring about all these events, wants to actually conquer death and kill Kindred, and raised an army of the undead as a means to that end.

I also imagine this stuff will be better explained on the 28th or shortly after that, since that's likely when the Harrowing's gonna roll on by this year.

Meanwhile Yorick is still left forgotten while Thresh collects more souls and Kalista continues her work in the same "profession".

The Shivering Isles is obsessed with death, and Mordekaiser steals the souls of his victims, commanding those that he gruesomely killed himself. I don't think it's so hard to get where the title comes from.
