An overanalysis of a throwaway Morgana quote at Jarven "Those you love can destroy you, Jarvan."

Those you love can destroy you, Jarvan.

So I thought this was a pretty interesting quote for a lot of reasons, mainly because Jarvan recently had his lore updated and it's shipping so there's that. Most of the time, champion quotes tend to be quippy comebacks but this one is weird because, as far as I know, Jarven has no canon 'loves' only headcanon'd shipping. So who exactly is Morgana referring to?

The way I interpreted destroy, isn't just emotionally, but a sort of betrayal. So what's the biggest betrayal for a Prince of Demacia? If someone's a mage.

  • First of all, the non-shipping option.

Jarven loves his Kingdom and his Kingdom can destroy him (because mages). This is even more apparent with the Sylas' Great Mage Rebellion. Morgana is referring to 'love' the same way Kayle has 'love' for mortals like The Rock in Moana where it's a noblesse oblige kind of love then actual affection. It would make sense that Morgana has a disdain for Jarvan's love for his people/kingdom because it mirrors the same sort of relationship her sister Kayle had with the early Demacians, that of a upright superior/nobility-in-the-sky.

  • Shyvana is the most likely shipping option imo

Though the king was overcome with emotion at his son’s return, some of the gathered nobles quietly questioned the wisdom of allowing such a creature to stand with the prince… let alone serve as one of his protectors.

Shyvana and Jarvan's lore are basically so intertwined it's impossible to discuss one bio without mentioning the other. Given that Shyvana is a half-dragon, has a rune shard in her, and is pretty dangerous it's straight forward that she can easily destroy Jarvan (emotionally/physically). It's also interesting given how xenophobic and anti-magic that Demacia is shown, Shyvana's induction into a royal guard despite her blue skin is sort of... accepted? I had no idea that Jarvan's clout was so strong that it could overcome centuries of racism/xenophobia with a "BECUZ I'M DA PRINCE DESU!" Even in that one Demacian story that came out with Sylas' update, Demacia's closest allies had to be watched by the Mageseekers and explicitly forbidden from using magic in Demacian lands. So I'm interested in the logistics and opinions nobles/Mageseekers/etc... on Jarvan keeping a half-dragon in her personal guard.

  • Then there was Lux

This is less likely compared to Lux in my opinion, but Jarvan would undoubtedly be aware of Lux's existence via Garen and given that Lux is a mage, she also has the power to 'destroy' Jarvan. Is Jarven loves Lux, then Lux has the power to emotionally devastate him ("I'm a mage desu!") and also physically ("FINAL SPARK OMAE WA MOU SHINDEIRU DESU!!!!!!"). But I don't think it's likely, at least not given the current lore state, with Lux and Jarven having no canon interactions.

  • Oh and Leblanc

This is a pre-Retcon thing but it was commonly believed that Leblanc was masquerading as Jarvan. Knowing now that Leblanc is one of the Trifaric, the trio of rulers in Noxus, and how she's a manipulator, it's entirely plausible that one of the greatest sorceresses of all time and leader of the biggest threat to Demacia besides those filthy mages could seduce Jarvan. But given how isolated most factions are from one another, it's pretty unlikely at this stage unless there's more lore developments.

  • Random Sejuani because why not.

In Jarvan's pre-updated lore, it said...

Determined to prove his worth through victories in battle, Jarvan IV led his troops against bands of Winter's Claw reavers, warring tribes, and even a coven of rogue mages.

So it's not implausible Jarvan and Sejuani had encountered one another.

  • Oh yeah, and Garen.

Garen's an implied mage right? Garen could destroy Jarvan right? I mean, Garen's ult is preeeeeety magecraft to me...

I don't know what other plausible options there could be that's even remotely referenced in lore as to who Morgana could be referring to.

I would more imagine that this is about his family and his court more than his actual friends. His father, and family, for generations have upheld the strict, xenophobic, and genocidal tendencies of Demacia. So when young Jarvan IV shows up, with a half dragon and a foreigner in his personal guard, that's clearly going to cause some unrest and disturbance not only in court, but with his family, who will see his choices in friends as humiliating and shameful.

His family, for the most part, has the most influence and power over him, since he's to become the next king of Demacia in time. Their strict ideals for power and how to hold it can easily destroy him, especially if his worldly views on people and magic will be a wedge driving him from them and causing them to hate him or plot for some other distant relative to replace him.

I don't think that garen's ult is a magecraft anymore after the Kyle story update (Necrit had a theory and it's that garen's ult might be coming from kayle because in her story says that she infuses her soldiers swords with Sunfire and by the way garen's ult called Demacian justice and kayle is the second half of the aspect of justice .

Can't believe you didn't mention Quinn. I don't know if they've changed this but initially she was recruited by J4 himself and she looked up to him.

That being said, I think that the more likely options are Shyvana (who is now extremely intertwined with Jarvan's lore) or just Demacia as a whole, which is supposed to be this accepting and neighborly place but has huge problems with mages and xenophobia. Morgana herself was burned by the zealousness of proto-Demacia before, and seeing as she is a very bitter person she might have a feeling the same will happen to Jarvan. Like Morgana, Jarvan will want to believe the best in Shyvana and the best of Demacia's acceptance of her, but someone or something will happen in opposition to that that will harm him, either physically or emotionally.

That's my take anyways.
