Nautilus Lore

> All know the tales; all pay the Bilgewater tithe. Since time immemorial, Nautilus has roamed the dark waters off the coast of the Blue Flame Isles, dragging impious sailors to their doom. The armored goliath strikes without warning, his inexorable footfalls churning the waters, before swinging his enormous anchor upward to shatter mast and keel alike. He then pulls the flotsam beneath the waves to appease the wrath of the Bearded Lady.

So, before Vaarus reared his ugly head on the boards, another new Bio that was realized that have fans upset is the Big Daddy himself. In Nautilus old lore, he was part of an expedition to chart unknown waters. To quote;

> Once, Nautilus was a sailor commissioned to explore the uncharted reaches of the Guardian's Sea. This expedition took him deep into unknown waters where he and his crew found a vast section of black oozing liquid that none of the crew could identify. Though their job was to investigate anything new that they found, no man aboard was willing to brave the murk except Nautilus. Only moments after he donned the hulking diver's suit and climbed over the ship's rail, something lurking in the muck grabbed hold of him. He clung to the side of the ship, but the thing below pulled him fiercely, rocking the entire ship. The other sailors grew afraid and made a terrible decision. As he stared and pleaded for help, they wrenched his grip free of the rail. He tumbled into the ink, grabbing the anchor in futile desperation. Dark tendrils enveloped him and he could do nothing but watch as the dimming outline of his ship faded away. Then everything went black.

> When Nautilus awoke, he was something... different. The great iron suit had become a seamless shell around him, concealing whatever awful truth lay inside. All the details of his memory seemed fuzzy and indistinct but one fact remained clear: he was left here, alone in the sunless depths, to die. In his hands he still clutched the anchor that belonged to the men who had condemned him. Having no other purpose, he took this clue and trudged - too heavy to swim or run - in search of answers. He wandered without direction or sense of passing time in what felt like an eternal dream. By the time he stumbled upon the shores of Bilgewater, he could find no traces of the man he was. No house, no family, no life to which he could return.

Now, This was changed to the above lore. It's an interesting departure, I don't think it's as bad as Targon or Vaarus, but it's kind of weird. The reason for the change, at least I believe, is because of Nautilus's diving suit. Bilgewater seems to be stuck with 18th century weaponry and the suit would probably fit with the more technically evolved factions like Zaun or Piltover.

Now, remember, that new Naut is just a Bio at this point. Hopefully that is just how the people of Bilgewater see our beloved Titan. What I hope to see is that his backstory is still much the same, but the being he encountered was The Bearded Lady. It turned him into what he is now, and he assaults ships out of desperation as his memories are fading away. To The Mother, she sees absolutely nothing wrong about this, because (at least as far as I understand) he is in motion as he has a goal and will do what he can to pursue it.

Now, what are your opinions on it?

As I see the story, Nautilus becomes the Davy Jones of League of Legends. He was once a sailor, his crew left him to die in the depth. The change is that it is not some unknown black goo that turned him into his current state.

Instead, he encountered the Bearded Lady. His sheer will to live impressed her and therefore she decided to give him a chance. Giving him a new life and a new purpose, he is now wandering the oceans as that colossus dragging down ships as a tribute for the goddess. And maybe he even got his revenge by doing exactly this to the crew that betrayed him.

More seriously, it feels like another example of change for the sake of change. There wasn't anything strictly wrong with the old Naut lore anymore than there was anything wrong with Varus' or Volibear's.

It feels like Narrative is trying to force everything into a more 'epic' setting. Problem is, making everything more epic can easily lose the down to earth, human aspects as a result. Why are so many champs being turned into demi-gods when they were just unusual people previously? I would love to hear a straight answer on that one.

I personally prefer Nautilus’ story to focus on being the hulking Titan of the Depths, I’d like it if his color story was told from a sailor’s perspective. We could get the chance to hear the tail, and have the real Naut work his way into the story.

I am willing to go along with the new story as long as Riot expands it and doesn't make Nautilus another "He's a legend, but as far as he himself goes, no one knows anything about him" champion. I would prefer this to be "League of Legends" not "League of Urban Legends".

My opinion is 'Is that pony Nautilus in that picture?'

It triggers me when singers can't pronounce all the consonants in a word. Revedge? What is that?

I made a post very similar to this a while back and I have to agree. I always liked how Nautilus had this human side of him, how he was indeed a human who was transformed by something even we did not know and is looking for answers to his past and the people who left him. Seeing how Pyke is taking a good chunk of Nautilus' old lore now though, I am worried that Riot does not want to keep the old story premise any longer. :(
