- Anivia has the potential to be not only a cryophoenix but also the literal manifestation of winter on Runeterra. At her prime, the world would be at its coldest, her wings bringing harsh winter gales and snowstorms across the land. But when the time comes for Anivia to be reborn, the snow would melt to give way to spring, until such time that she is grown enough to bring the world into winter once more. In this sense, she’d be a metaphysical embodiment of the Freljord.
- Bandle City lore is a mystery at the moment, which makes it difficult to conceive of new ideas for now-outdated yordles. Corki, however, has a pretty distinct theme as an air pilot; the problem is his theme is quite boring. I’d say if we wanted to upgrade him narratively, we could make him the first yordle — nay, the first person on Runeterra — to discover aviation through the invention of the Hextech aircraft. He’d be the Orville Wright or Amelia Earhart of his time, with the twist that he’s used magic to engineer and empower his vehicle. This would turn him from a standard pilot to one of Piltover’s most daring and inventive pioneers, flying using a combination of magic and yordle ingenuity.
- I’ve said this before but I think Fiddlesticks has a lot of potential as a trespass demon—a malicious entity who feeds on the fear of losing one’s way by haunting lone roads and other abandoned spaces. This would play into his scarecrow theme (they were built to frighten off wary trespassers after all) while subverting it and making it League’s very own. I also think the fear of being lost or alone is deep enough to warrant its own special demon, though if that’s too narrow or specific he could easily just be the demon of fear as well, which would still make a lot of sense for a scarecrow character.
- As it stands, Fizz is just a random aquatic yordle who does things for reasons unknown to us. I think if there’s only going to be one yordle like him in the game, then he needs to be special. Make him the Prince of the Seas; a trickster who assumed the throne by outwitting a dictator and stealing his ancient trident. Or he could be the last of his kind—an optimistic legacy-bearer intent on restoring the greatness of his species’ crumbling civilization. Whatever the direction they ultimately take with him, Fizz needs something to elevate his theme beyond just “playful undersea furball.”
- Gragas suffers from the same issue Fizz does at the moment, in that he’s not really special enough to warrant being called a legend or champion. Now, while I know there is at least some niche appeal to playing normal, run-of-the-mill characters (looking at you, Warlords Dienekes), generally speaking I think people prefer to play champions who are highly aspirational (why pick the boring soldier dude when you can be THE god of soldiers?). That comparison is perhaps more appropriate than you think, because I’d say Gragas has a lot of potential to be the god of drunks. By that I mean, he can be Runeterra’s host to the Aspect of Reverie—a Targonian god of food, wine, and partying. Examples of such gods like this from real-world mythology include Dionysus, who also had a love of wine and festivities. Bonus points if Gragas climbed the mountain as a dare/bet from his drinking buddies and only got to the top because of how intoxicated he was. ;)
- Kayle is an angelic being who represents not only justice but also virtue and a strict sense of order. These themes immediately call to mind a potential connection to Demacia, the people of whom which I could easily see venerating Kayle as their religious deity (the Veiled Lady). If that’s the direction Riot takes with her, I’d be ecstatic—they could even make her a seraphim with six wings as an upgrade to her angelic theme. However, there are probably a lot of ways to make Kayle cooler than she is right now without necessarily elevating her to godhood, as she doesn’t really need to be the most special and unique angel anyway—she’s already one of two in the game which lowers the stakes a bit (though she should still be noteworthy and powerful, of course).
- Just like I feel Kayle should be the angelic god of justice, Morgana has the potential to be League’s queen of the underworld—a dark, cruel mistress who awaits wretched souls in the afterlife to punish and torment them for eternity. Now, I understand a lot of players would prefer something much more nuanced and complex than just “good vs. evil” when it comes to the angelic sisters—their reworks present a unique opportunity to take biblical themes such as Lucifer’s Banishment from Heaven and subvert them, showing another side to the story where perhaps Lucifer (or in this case, Morgana) is not quite as evil as he is made out to be. Regardless, I do think Morgana could be a lot cooler than she is today if Riot went full circle with her “soul shackling” theme, and the logical next step to that would be to make her the keeper of souls in Runeterra’s afterlife, IMO.
I’ll stop here because the list is getting long, but I think most of it is just a case of taking existing themes and realizing the full potential in them within the context of the League universe without betraying the core feel of the champion.
