Lore versus Game

Into the Mists: Creating Shadow and Fortune

Rito creates events: pieces of story centered around a new game type and character revamps et cetera... right? Now they've officially abandoned the idea of summoners to simply create good stories. And it seems The Rift as a place is no longer diagetic.

It might just be my 'idiot' thinking, but here's an idea:

How about Rito introduces game types and one-off/unique maps where only participating characters in the story for the event can be played? That way, we as players can live out some of the lore, and not feel this complete disconnect between our champion and the battle.

These characters are cool and all, but if you give us all of this lore, and we're playing this game where none of it actually matters...then you're not really adding to the experience and value of enjoyment we as players get. For instance, if Teemo has a child. And that child is murdered. If Teemo doesn't express out on the Rift his anger and frustration a the world...then does the lore actually carry any weight? If it doesn't actually develop the champions, and show its self off in a kind of interactive manner then the lore hasn't really succeeded at doing anything for the game. There will be readers who read the lore, and there will be players who play the game. Some people might be both, but ultimately all the extra effort means nothing if the two worlds (1.the fiction 2. the interactive experience: fighting on summoner's rift) are entirely disconnected.

For all you care Rito, the Teemo you have built in the lore isn't the same Teemo I play out on the battlefield. Effectively, They might share the same name, but without a link between the fiction and the game, all this creative writing revamping is meaningless.

It to me is an incredible shame that it is solely the player's choice to decide whether or not to 'project (verb)' the lore they know about a character onto it while they fight in The Rift.

Arguably my opinion means nothing, I'm still a relatively new player.

For the poll at the bottom:

  1. I agree. Lore is meaningless/pointless/useless/ adds nothing to my experience without being connected to the game.

  2. No. Lore is fun even if disconnected from the experience.

I've had thoughts about something like this before. A Demacia VS Noxus ARAM, with character chatter on the bottom of the screen, classic RTS style, with the characters interacting.

Garen JarvanIV XinZhao Galio Lux on one team, with Ezreal as a shopkeeper.

Swain Sion Katarina Talon Darius on the other, with Draven as the Dra... I mean the shopkeeper.

The issue here is that the vast majority of players do not care about the Lore. Look at the population of this board compared to GD or Gameplay. Look at how we have to smash Story/Art/Sound together to have something that even vaguely competes in traffic.

While someone like me who really loves the Lore would think it's really cool to see Piltover VS Zaun matches or something like that, your average player is going to say "What the hell is a "Piltover", why can't I play Yasuo????" It would be really cool, but the resource cost of making a whole new map/or something like that is going to be hard to justify for what is a fairly niche part of the game experience. They could just toss out URF again and have millions more players than the most well crafted Lore map, sadly.

If you like the idea of teams based on certain Factions, though, I'd strongly advise you to check out leaguefactions.net, which is a fan-run sort of league where people play matches with fixed rosters based on factions, and sometimes have big story arcs with player-contributed lore and things like that.

Are you familiar with Factions? It's a fan community that plays League matches to shape their own dynamic pre-retcon-style lore. It's an awesome program and an awesome community. If you really want lore and gameplay to be involved with one another, you would do well to check it out. My only complaint is that I don't yet have enough champions to play for any faction other than Demacia, which I don't really care for. In any case, Factions is to me what League of Legends should have been all along, and I can only hope that the community grows until Riot catches on and makes it official.

Lore look like living dead in this time.

I personally voted for the second option because saying the lore is absolutely meaningless without being connected to the games is a little harsh/over the top, however I would like to see some more in game lore related events. Special game modes where all but certain factions of champions were blocked would be pretty cool.

If they would have brought back butchers bridge and done a special game-mode where one side got Lucian, Miss Fortune, and Olaf while the other side got Hecarim, Thresh, and Karthus that would have been pretty cool. Without some kind of special balance change it would probably become boring at some point and one team would always win, but it could still be pretty cool for a bit.
