So not sure but is he undead? He doesnt look like it. He looks alive. So my question is, barring him being dead, how did he survive under water?

He's an undead. He didn't survive. From his story, it sounds like the leviathans were able to take control of his spirit to do their bidding. Revenge for all their fellows who've been killed by whalers.

We're really..not sure..

Riot did a very good job of making it ambiguous as to what Pyke really even is. For one, they definitely don't give us a direct answer in the lore, and he has aspects of many different things. He's got to be a zombie, because he's physically real and litterally fucking slashes throats in bilgewater, right? Well yes, but actually no. He is physical but also..not physical..he can turn into a weird phasing thing that thinks it's a shark and honestly it's just weird and I don't like to think about it. Okay so if he's not a zombie then what, is he like a returned ghost like Mordekaiser? Welllll that doesn't really make sense either because for one how in the fuck would he escape daddy morde's land and for two he again has a somewhat physical body sooo..? So he's not dead, he just got his body and mind fucked with by fish magic? Well I don't know about you but he can do some REALLY WEIRD SHIT TO JUSTIFY VIA FISH MAGIC!

I don't know what Pyke is, Riot doesn't know what Pyke is, and Pyke damn sure don't know what Pyke is

He's a revenant; a reanimated corpse that retains all his memories (compared to zombies which are mindless, or a ghost, which is just the soul without the body.)

He's dead, just really pissed off and not moving on or leaving his body for awhile.

He is a "drowned".

He is something entirely new. I don't think he is undead.

He is apparently undead, but it's not related to the curse of the shadow isles, hence why he looks so different. We don't know what caused his transformation though.

Well first of all we don't know what he really is and how he got his power, but if you take a look at this passive , its called "Gift of the Drowned Ones", he also mentions a swimming city and talking fish, doesn't that ring a bell? Pyke is inspired from the Cthulhu mythos he is probably a servant of some old god that lies beneath the sea.

I can't find the story right now but I remember in a Nami story she needed to get a moon stone or something from the depths of the ocean and she saw a ghastly dark presence, could that presence be what resurrected and has allied with Pyke?

edit: https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Into_the_Abyss found it.

apparently I forgot there's voidborn at the bottom of the seas, that would mean my theory points that pyke is possibly a voidborn now and I don't really like that idea....so forget it.

As some fellow players have written before me, What little we know about Pyke is that he is some kind of Revenant revived by Jaullfish Magic or maybe something even worse that we still don't know of. By his story, sapphilite seems to be related to him, being maybe the origin of his water-related powersas his eye does seem blue enough to pass as something similar to what the Jaullfish had inside.

Its just theory at this point, but he might be a corpse revived by sapphilite (forcefully introduced in his brain through the eye cavity) and controled as a puppet by the "fishes" that brought him back. It's unlucky that regarding the Lovecraftian tones around not only Pyke but also Bilgewater, we might never know the truth of the Swimming City

As he clearly states: "Captains told me to kill fish. Fish told me to kill captains. Makes sense." Everyone knows that fish don't talk, therefore fish couldn't have told him anything. But he says that this makes sense ("Makes sense." -Pyke, 2018). Thus, it is quite clear that he is insane... and that is how he survived underwater. QED.
