So I'm guessing Yuumi is the non-humanoid champion Reav3 said was in development?

So obviously Yuumi is a non- humanoid character and honestly I like her design a lot. As someone who played a ton of Abathur and duo'd as Gall with my friend being Cho in HotS, I'm extremely excited for the kind of gameplay Yuumi provides. That being said, I've also been a big fan of monster champions over the years and there basically hasn't been a new one since Aurelion Sol. If you want a monster to actually be monstrous, you'd have to go back even further to Rek'sai.

Now I get it, monsters don't sell as well as humanoids and they're also kinda wonky to balance because their weird proportions are usually matched with weird kits, but I think we're overdue for a new monster. Lots of people thought Pyke would be a sea monster, the wording of Kayn's teaser could be construed as a monster, etc. I like both of those characters too, but I do wish one of these times we'll actually get something horrifying especially with all the new Void art.

Basically, when Reav3 said a non- humanoid was being made I'm sure lots of people thought of monsters. Yuumi's going to be my enchanter of choice from now on, but I'm still patiently waiting for a high quality abomination to come out. I think enough time has passed to give us one, monsters may not be super popular but the small playerbases they gain are super dedicated and honestly it's cool to fight alongside one even if you aren't the player. Whenever I see a Vel'Koz on my team it's just fun to watch them move and cast spells, it makes the game world feel like more than humans in various cosplays.

Riot could also update Skarner or Cho'gath so our existing monsters are even more spooky. I'm just beginning to worry the content draught for this type of character design is actually indication we'll never get a monstrous non-humanoid again.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind another monster champion, or at least a cooler non humanoid. Don't get me wrong, I love Yuumi, but I get why some people might not like her or be disappointed by her.

I wouldn't mind another dragon, personally. They're one of the most diverse mythical creatures, and in Runeterra, there is literally endless possibilities for a dragon character. Fuck, Irelia said there's over 300 species of talking dragons in Ionia, and I'd imagine they're quite the beautiful creatures. Imagine if Noxus got their hands on a dragon egg during their invasion of Ionia, and now its old enough to be used in warfare.

Being fair, Reav3 did say that there was at least one non-humanoid champion in development.

While that could easily mean Yummi was the only one, perhaps we could also choose to look at this wording as hope for another void creature or ancient Freljordian or something.

One day Yuumi will get an armored cat skin to fit her playstyle of being a piece of living equipment.

I keep hearing people say that monster champions are unpopular because people don't like playing as them. But so far, I've found no evidence that this is the actual reason. And it doesn't explain why some monster champions, such as Kha'zix, are in fact popular. It seems to me that the real reason monster champions tend not to be popular is that Riot gives them boring or unintuitive kits. Case in point: Aurelion Sol has one of the most awkward, boring, and uninteractive kits in the game (you do 99% of your damage with a toggled ability, repetitively hitting enemies with revolving stars), and he is also among the most unpopular champs in the game. Coincidence? I think not.

You know, I actually thought the same thing, so I went back & checked what were his exact words

Atm we do have at least 1 non-human champ in development :)

That "At least" is the key here.

Yuumi is disappointing tbh, she's like the League champion version of cat memes, I mean, they basically admitted to doing that, they uploaded a thumbnail with Yuumi doing the cat bread thing.

You can make a monster that doesn't have "weird proportions" or a "weird kit," I always figured the issue with "monster" champions was their potential for lore stories and the lack of an ability to connect with a real monster on a personal level.

the solutions to this are to not make the monster too powerful and give them some other semi-relatable goals that don't involve the complete and utter annihilation of someone/something/ or some area. This way you can more easily write them in stories where the only outcomes aren't the killing of something else, or them, or someone just having to escape the other. Do this and u can have some real engaging stories and have character growth and development.

Character is important. Now that we have out FULL bestial monster fulfilled in Rek'sai we don't need another monster like that AND know that it doesn't work the best for personal connections for most people. What we need are monsters with personality, and not mindless machines that follow simple thought processes and instincts. That's fine but we already have them now.

The weird kit thing is probably just an unlucky coincidence, but now that Riot has noticed this they can fix that trend with serious intention.

And the difficulty with balance in terms of weird proportions I don't understand (Unless ur talking about Sol, but they fixed that). But that can be fixed by designing less weird proportions or design the champion keeping the weird proportions in mind (Ex: Sol)

The new lore for Voli and his status as a future VGU champ shows that they haven't given up on monsters, theres hope yet.

I've been designing a few monsters champs. If ur interested lemme know

I also want to point out that whoever was writing the posts on the popularity of monsters was obviously picking and choosing who they considered to be a monster and who they didn't, because Kha'zix wasn't in the list and he's obviously a monster even if on the more humanoid side.

makes it worse when u realize that Kai'sa should have had a monstrous design...but no we got this...non fitting most UN void like design

Nope, only edgy bois and cute smiling girls from now on. Illaoi and Taliyah proved failures so they can't make any champions that aren't copypasted molds, certain audiences don't have any interest in these types of champions. Plus, they'll eventually have to make SKINS for them? Can you imagine, making skins for a champion that only has 60,000 players worldwide? You'd have to make them meta in high elo for anyone to buy them....

The next champions and reworks are all human, enhanced human, metal human or humanoid from what we can tell. Mordekaiser: Metal Human. new AD Assassin: Humanoid. Pantheon: Enhanced human. new non-traditional marksmen: Human?

I'm not sure about August's marksmen, but everything else is confirmed human or at least humanoid. Maybe the rework chosen by the community will help, I can see Volibear or Fiddlesticks getting it, but then there's also Mundo, Udyr and Vlad which are closer to humans.

Vlada Cut5/1/2019, 7:06:46 PM1 votes

Just rework all Void champions. Buddy. Imagine if Vel Koz's current look in the lore was in-game...

EdgeLady5/1/2019, 7:18:02 PM1 votes

Yuumi isn't exactly humanoid, but she's as close to humanoid as you can get without really being one. My guess is that we'll have a non-humanoid voidborn somewhere down the line, since the Void update only touched on the humans and not the voidborn, and even now, the the only one out of the five voidborn that has updated lore is Vel'Koz.

DeadUnborn5/1/2019, 8:12:09 PM1 votes

hell i would even settle for a reworked cho gath or nocturne

I was expecting a the new Rek'Sai or Vel'Koz. I'm not hating on Yuumi btw she's adorable and i love her already but i miss some creativity in champ design besides humanoids who walk on 2 feet or literately a cat ya know?
