This masterpiece was created in order to fit with the lore of this magnificent Champion The legends speaks of a dark haired, pale man, who was tasked with the mission to accompany souls to the domain of the dead when their time comes. Unfortunately this caused the all the living creatures to shun the lonely man therefore he decided to split him self in two, right in the middle. so he would always have a friend.
Kindred are actually two begins, tied together, Lamb, a creature that can not possess a feeling and Wolf, a creature who's abundant with feelings , yet does not possess a physical body. Together, they complete each other.
In the melody we notice two individual insturments A piano and A cello, together they play in harmony The piano, focusing mostly on the high notes of the piece, is representing Lamb, as you can hear each note being pressed giving the illusion of footwork, quoting Ed, he wanted to portray her "agile and precise attributes" and allow me to add, delicacy [although it differs from beginning to end] The cello, focusing mostly on the low notes of the piece, is representing Wolf, quoting Ed, he wanted to express his "aggressive character" The continuous friction of the bow, delivers the feeling of flotation for as you know, wolf's has no physical body unlike Lamb.
Ed is making them both "dance" with each other after the two are bound together, and you can notice the way that the piece is divided into two halves, the first one, lead by the piano, and the second one, lead by the cello in addition, I couldn't find the source, but I rememeber reading that this can not be preformed by a single musician without forfeiting major aspects of the piece.
When Ed was asked about the style of the piano he says, and I quote:
"I would say the closest thing to Kindred's style is Romantic music. Off the top of my head, I can't think of pieces with the same kind of techniques (I am not a pianist myself, so my knowledge of the repertoire isn't concentrated on piano technique), but there is plenty of stuff for you to chew on in the works of Rachmaninoff, early Scriabin, Prokofiev, etc.
Kindred isn't concert music and caters to the champion's story, and some of the more ambient moments of the piece echo the piano works of Ravel and Satie.
Of course, I am in no way comparing my work on Kindred to that of the masters I just mentioned. I'm a padawan, they're Master Jedis."
Ed also shared the official note sheets of Kindred's theme, after taking a look, it would seem the piece has no Bmol or Diez in the starting section which could indicate it is written in C major/A minor. I searched for an analysis in the internet and had a result which claimed it's on Dmajor which I would say, was more suitable, for the D could stand for "Death" the main aspect of the character Kindred although in professional terms, the piece is definitely on a minor scale, therefore Major wouldn't be the correct term.
This was the work I presented in a class as a first semester assignment [pick a musical piece that can be related to what we've learned] and lecture the class about it for 5 minutes ^^ so I was satisfied with my research and wanted to share it , and also keep the discussion going!
I'd like to hear you opinions, maybe you have more things to add or somethings you think are incorrect and would like to help me out ^^
