Direction of Kassadin’s New Lore

So, one of the last batches of short bio updates included Kassadin. He used to be a scholar who fell into the Void and allowed the Void into him so he could survive and fight to prevent the world’s end. His recent update is a man who’s daughter was taken by the Void (throwback to the JoJ, I learned) and he went to save her, only to be corrupted and running out of time as the corruption takes him.

So my question is, why change it and make him similar to the old Varus, just without him willigly taking the dark power? His lore, as with a few others, had little to do with the League of Legends and so did not need any real retconning. And since it is being changed, what bigger plans are there for him?

As I felt with some other lore changes, I don’t like where this is heading. I was drawn to this character who did what he had to in order to survive, and then committed himself to stopping the Void. Why do we not have more people dedicated to this outside the Aspects, and why retcon one of the few?

Now he’s...Void Liam Neeson? His daughter was taken and now his only purpose is to save her? Don’t get me wrong, I can understand that drive, but it’s such a huge change in dynamic for a character who’s previous lore did actually fit into a bigger narrative.

So what will Kassadin be now? An isolated story about him trying to free his daughter? Compelling, but not why I personnaly was drawn to him. So what will it be?

And for those who liked his previous lore, what drew you into liking him?

P.S. i’m not looking forward to the result of “Wait and See” again..

I'm not saying I completely disagree with the inclusion of his daughter as a driving force, but I agree that committing his life to preventing the Void from taking over was key to Kassadin. His daughter, to me, was a nice detail and gave Kass a more personal horse in this race. Sort of like when the Villain in a super hero movie takes his girlfriend: like yeah, he was gonna stop the bad guy regardless, but the personal connection made him extra determined, and makes the audience care more, too.

One thing I do completely agree with you on is the "Varus change"....I am still stinging from the major Varus change that basically threw away this entire aspect of his character, and seeing it on Kassadin...ugh. I don't like it. It feels like they took a key aspect of one character, removed it, later gave it to another character to replace HIS key aspect and it just feels wrong. I guess they want Kassadin to be a more tragic character?

Here's some small tweaks I would do: keep the daughter motivation the same, have him go into the Void to try to save her. He tries and tries, but it seems futile: his daughter is lost forever (so they can keep their tragedy). On his last dip in the Void, he finally lets go, thinking his daughter is gone. In this moment of weakness, the Void gets in him, but he uses it, resists it and escapes the Void with its help. He lets the Void in just like his old story. Once he's out, with his newfound powers, he is determined to never let what happened to his daughter happen to anyone ever again. Every once in a while, in his exploits against the Void, they tempt him with hope that his daughter might still be out there. And while each time he is tempted to listen, he resists, knowing that even if she is still alive, this is the best thing he could do for her.

As an aside, Kassadin's daughter has been like number one on my list of lore-related Champion wish list for a long time now. Just the idea of this once sweet girl--I picture her being like teenage, but not that old--but now she's all twisted by the Void, some creature inhabiting her soul and twisting her mind and body. She could have quotes where she seems like a normal teenager, but then some quotes talk about killing and maiming halfway through as if this is also casual teenage talk. Then she could have a special interaction with Kassadin, something like "Daddy, why didn't you save me...?" That would really mess with his head. And we don't really have anything like that in League, I'd definitely like to see the Void do some Lovecraft head games.

I don't see why Icathia can't be a major hole in relativity that separate the two planes. Sure the Void can threaten Runeterra as a whole, but whats wrong with letting Icathia be the 1st major rip in the barrier that causes a lot of casualties and wakes a portion of Runeterra up to what might be going on. Sure what happened in Icathia might be so old that it would not be as threatening anymore, but it could still be the source of many rumours/legends of monsters that once took an entire desert city/village of knowledge (of old times) down.

I think they should give him back his old mission as well.

how do you see kassadin becoming Old Varus? He need for vengeance isn’t consuming him and he didn’t lose everything. His goal is to save his daughter and the rest of the world from the Void.

Maybe the way that he found the void is different, but i dont see many differences (for now), specially considering that her daugher was something from the old lore as well.

I think that the main reason of changing the way that he found the Void is because of the changes that the lore has been received... Rek'sai and Targon specifically. In the old lore, Icathia was the source of the "void problems" but in the new lore, the Void is a thing that has been affecting Runeterra as a whole, specially Shurima and Targon... So, it would make little sense for Kassadin to not know what the Void was while looking for knowledge since void beast attack Shurima all the time and he is from shurima.

He's just getting a new lore right? No rework because i'm starting to love him.
