Riot, What is With These Splashes?

I love the Jhin splash art, but I don't understand why Riot is determined to have their splashes different than the actual skin model. The Diana one was already explained in detail in the BM Diana thread, but with the release of the BM Jhin splash art, it is apparent there is a breakdown of communication between the skin modeling department and the splash art department at Riot.

I attached a comparison picture of the Blood Moon Jhin splash vs the model. Noted are several obvious differences.

  1. His shoulder cannon is on the wrong should in the splash. I honestly don't know how this could be screwed up. It is always on the right shoulder. An easy fix for this though would be mirroring the splash.

  2. The armor pauldron is on the wrong shoulder as well. Can be fixed with mirroring as well.

  3. He has two demon arms in the splash and only one in the model.

  4. The demon arms extend all the way up the arm in the splash, but seem to stop at about the elbow in the model

  5. The ult bullets are more pointed in the splash, but cylinders in the model.

  6. Jhin's overall shape is more "fluffy" in the model, and much more slim in the splash.

  7. The feather demon brooch in the model is nowhere to be seen in the splash, but this could be an indication that he was ulting, and the brooch disappears while ulting.

  8. The horns in the model are long and curvy, while the splash's are short and has straighter edges and sharper curves.

  9. In the splash, he has this sort of half kimono vest thing, but in the model it's an entirely red shirt that ends in the belt and tail of a half kimono (don't know the technical word for that article of clothing).

I imagine if someone wants to look super hard, they will find lots of small discrepancies here and there.

I just don't understand how the model and splash can look so different. Are they not compared after finishing to ensure continuity between them? Is Riot just rushing these splashes and skins through the creation process that they don't even assess them for quality?

Don't get me wrong; I am not angry about this. I love Jhin, and I love that he is getting a new skin. The splash looks amazing, and the skin is pretty cool, but I wish they would at least look like each other. There is some real lack of communication between these two departments that is becoming more and more obvious with the release of each skin set. Diana's Blood Moon skin and splash has similar problems as mentioned in her thread. It just seems like Riot is trying to rush these skins out and make money instead of giving them the care they deserve.

I feel as though aesthetically, in this case, the Blood Moon Jhin Splash > Model. Feelsbadman. Just my opinion, though.

As a cosplayer I am always annoyed about how vastly different the model and the splash are. I get adding in extra detail in the splash since it's much more up close than we typically are ingame, but completely changing the outfit or the orientation of his gun is nuts.Jhin

Riot just sucks as a company right now and they have since season 4. They are on a totally different level than the players.

I've bought skins based on splashes before. Never again. I always look up the in game models online now. I've been burned too many times thinking a skin was badass and it's was absolute garbage in game. Conversely there are splashes that look "meh" but the in game models are amazing.

I agree with you and this is not new , there are three case scenario

  • Awesome Splash art but ... shitty in game models (not what you were expecting), low quality

  • Ugly Splash art but ... shocking , amazing in game models (high quality)

  • Misleading or false advertisement Splash art, (plot twist you get something different in game)

A lot of splash arts are flipped though that doesn't reflect the in game model (aka some shoulder pads are on the wrong side or some champs are holding their weapons on the opposite hand), that's a common occurrence.

I agree, there may be some sort of discord between the artists and the model designers. I would like whichever one is easier to be changed to be changed though.

ah just give up, I complained about this with masked shaco who looked different from his art as well, different/no armor and different colors but riot doesn't care

and the mask/head in game model looks really weird; kind of reminds me of aurelion sol with unnaturally elongated horns. i think it could be a lot better if the mouth was removed so it looks more like the splash with just the two hole things

They often flip the way are "should" be in order to put champions in the left hand side for standardization purposes in client.

Snowstorm Sivir with no wavy hair was my biggest letdown when it came to skins.

Don't forget the fact that in the splash he's wearing a cool vest but in-game he's wearing some small poncho and despite that there's what I can only assume is the bottom of the vest poking out from under his belt (even though he's not wearing such a shirt so it just looks like he's wearing a tiny skirt).

Splash art isn't a representation of the exact in game model, its meant to look cool loading in. IMO its close enough and you also have to consider the different art styles in game models use.

I think the model was changed last-minute to better reflect Jhin's design, while the splash art was started when a slightly different design was established.

Most likely what happened, though I prefer the ingame model version.

The main prob is that for "badass" skins they have to make the splash way darker (ex: dragon slayer panth, project zed) so no matter what the in game model ends up looking worse. Nothing they can do about that other than darken up the game

Lord Creazil1/28/2017, 8:54:48 AM1 votes

Simple answer: they want to sell stuff via pretty splash arts. The impulse decision means you buy and VERY limited refunds mean you gotta deal with it. Money > Players

Meanwhile, the horses that Warring Kingdom Xin Zhao and Jarvan IV are riding in their splashes...

So yeah, there are certain consistency issues that could be discussed here.

And he has a dark blue, almost black vest in the splash, whereas his in-game model has a bleak, teal vest... It looks nothing like the splash, and clashes with the theme :S I really dislike the teal on Jhin, and the blue on TF. It was supposed to be black according to Kindlejack:

{quoted}

The material is intended to be black, but we put a lot of colour into neutral tones to match the way SR is painted.

I don't see that, not when there are a lot of champions with dark grey and black textures, and when both Blood Moon TF and Blood Moon Jhin have black pants.

You are too picky. Why does this even bother you?

Rozzeta1/28/2017, 12:02:51 PM1 votes

A lot of times Riot has praised the independence their employees have to do their thing, which unfortunately often translates to dissonance like this. Older players migh also remember Zyra and Graves promo images being rather different from the actual thing.
