The fire that Scorched Mordekaiser; The Iron Revenant and imagery of flame and smoke

Hey guys, ya might already see this one very recent post of mine on top of the S&A boards, but it really got me thinking!

This actually really pulls off the Charcoal look of Mordekaiser's armour being burnt on the pyre his enemies constructed to scorch his remains. In the lore Mordekaiser has a very specific design element, that gets referenced a lot throughout his Bio and colour story: Imagery of Fire

Mordekaiser is very unique in how he's represented in his story, which doesn't quite match his current visual aesthetics. In the Lore, Mordekaiser's great Iron armour was actually literally blackened by the burning flames of hatred of his enemies. They threw his corpse onto a great pyre to celebrate his defeat.

It permanently made his armour assume a haunting black appearance, one of burnt metal, of charcoal. And this concept art really pulls this off! But it doesn't end there, his bones were also subjected to this and references to fire feature very prominently in his lore.

The Shade the Necromancers raise during the Ritual, Mordekaiser's soul, can be best described as Black Smoke. It's wispy, it's a constant torrent of stirring haze that resembles the black smokes of the pyre he was burnt on.

But the most unique reference to his demise is, and I quote, Witchfire. Be it Cruel orbs of burning Witchfire that are his eyes; similar to fiery embers you'd find in a great fiery inferno, or the very magic he commands, the imagery is very vivid indeed!

So, I was thinking, if this could be a good design direction to take Mordekaiser's design into! The cold, yet oh so scorching touch of necromantic witchfire! An armoured shell burnt to look like charred charcoal! Eyes akin to smoldering embers resting in empty eyesockets! Mordekaiser's form being nothing more than a wispy shade of smoke, clinging to his silhouette and dragging behind he with every move he makes?

I think this is certainly something Riot could try exploring in some early Mordekaiser visualization. It's Badass as heck, Metal as F*ck and would really make him unique!

Agreed.

I was about to leave feedback in your other thread about how I feel Morde is WAY overdue now. I don't even think Swain needed visual work as badly as Morde (gameplay, maybe).

It's time for Morde news. I get that Akali and Nunu also needed it, but I'm ready. The only champs that I think you could argue need it as much as Morde, at this point, are Morg and Kayle.

ok for real though I think this is a cool idea! I wish Riot would hire you to design mordekaiser's rework so we could come out with like 8 new Mordekaisers all with completely different kits and visuals. (Though personally I never liked your design for Morde with the cape)

Corrupted flames, as I called them, were actually one of my suggested magic types for Mordekaiser after rework - in the poll I made some time ago. I agree - witchfire fits Mordekaiser VERY much. It's also kinda poetic, no? They burned him to destroy him, yet now he would use the fire to destroy them.

Ahh this is a really cool idea. It makes Mordekaiser more of an enenra which are revenants who come back as baleful spirits of smoke n' ash in Japanese folklore iirc. It's definitely a very cool direction for Mordekaiser. I really love this rendition of him and the simple and understated look of the armor itself. I think it's my favorite Mordekaiser idea so far!

I agree, and I wish I could have played the burnt metal aspect of the armor up more in the VU I gave Morde. It was just too dark to work right in a render, but I do love how over time it's easier to discover what could have been. There are a lot of things I've learned from that project, and I've been tempted to go back and make tweaks/adjustments.

Didn't you post some time ago about icy theme fitting Mordekaiser?

Do you not think that anymore, or do you think those two can be combined somehow?
