Jarvan in Lux: Volume 4

In Jarvan IV's biography, his story ends with him taking Shyvana back to Demacia, "promised Shyvana that she would always have a place among his guard, if she so chose" and that "[he] saw the true strength of the Demacian people—standing together as one in defense of their homeland, no matter their differences or misgivings". He seems to have support towards magic people in these lines and this would align with how we see his father, King Jarvan III, in the comic and his various appearances in short stories. However, come the comic, Jarvan IV readily calls them "vile sorcerers", "monsters" and says that it was a mistake for his father to want peace with mages, something that implies he himself never did despite what is said in his own lore. This then rubber-bands later when he is being asked to defend himself and he seems to be fitting back into the Jarvan IV we know from his lore. This continues into the short story and Xin Zhao even notes that he is very uncharacteristically aggressive and that he once cared for the plight of mages. Also, from what the short story "Turmoil" (which apparently occurs one month after the events of Sylas breaking out) suggests, he then changes the Laws of Stone to further prosecute mages which is a complete change from his original goal.

Now I understand he has just had he father murdered and he is in a very fluctuating and unstable point of mind (I would be very worried if he didn't react poorly) but I can't help but feel there is something left untold about Jarvan IV which occurred before the events of the Lux comics. He seems too different from the Jarvan IV which appears in his short story and his background for there not to be. Furthermore, Shyvana who is his personal bodyguard is missing from the comic and his presence entirely, and, if we are to assume he is talking of her as the one he cared about who is somewhat like the mages but is no longer around, this suggests something has happened to or with Shyvana. I was just hoping to have some confirmation on whether or not something like this has occurred and if it will be possibly covered in the future? I ask this as personally I really enjoy the lore but I would also say that there is a bit of a tendency to focus on one or two characters in a region and brush over the others leaving their motivations and stories often uncertain to the reader. Sona, for instance, has not even received lore in the time since the Demacia update and as another mage in Demacia I feel it had a lot of missed potential. Though, I also understand there are many champions and only so many lore writers with only so much time.

Carrying on from this, I was also hoping to know if this isn't the end to Jarvan IV's character? Demacia is one of my favourite regions lore wise, only bested by the Void, and I personally would find it heartbreaking to see his characterisation left in such a state. He was such a positive character with a want of change prior to this most recent lore addition and now he is shaping up to be a villain in the eyes of myself and many others I have spoken to. Again, I know there are time constraints, but I would just love to know if there is to be any reconciliation planned for this in the future in which "all [Jarvan III's] hopes and dreams for the kingdom’s future would live on in his son"?

Also, a minor question but one which is scratching at my mind, in the lore Jarvan IV had post Demacia update but prior to Sylas' release, it stated Demacia's ruling King or Queen was determined by election. However, Jarvan IV seems to have just assumed the throne once his father died. Is this part of Demacia's lore retconned or it is something that has happened and is still canon but simply not covered or mentioned in the comics or short story? I am actually working on a fan lore project and having this part answered will be most helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly answer.

Honestly. Him remaining a positive character while becoming King just doesnt work for the greater narrative. It would sap purpose from the civil war, invalidate Sylas as a character that one could agree with, and make Demacia too much of a goody noblebright place. I feel the narrative practically requires J4 to become a hardliner, and I don't think it comes across as that unfitting, this is a traumatizing time for the country as a whole, especially for Jarvan considering his father was murdered and he didn't have a mother figure, plus his best friend Garen is clearly a bit of a hardliner himself which I am sure would have some influence.

That said, yes, where the hell is Shyvana, just doesn't really make much sense to neither have her, or explain her absence. Very curious to see if we get any information on the dragon lass.

Also, they have not blatantly retconned the elective monarchy issue, but I do believe that Demcia in practice pretty much always just votes for the Light Shields, and I think that in this case he might have just become an Assumed Monarch, or a Regency King because of the current crises getting in the way of holding an election.

Yeah, Shyvana's absence is a bit puzzling. I'd think if Shyvana knew about the crap going on with the concentration camps, she'd put a stop to it.

Also, according to Scathlocke, Poppy DOES know of the anti-magic camps. And still schlepps around Demacia hoping for it to become good-er. Poppy, pls.
