So let me get this straight here...

Volibear in his rework is some sort of wendigo thing?

Just my own hot take here: I'd say Volibear feels comparable to Fenrir. A deity who was treated more like a beast by his fellow godkin (and with Lissandra banishing him and the Ursine), which amounted to him actually becoming the monster everyone thought he was. Id say he's like Thor only in the most superficial overlap as both conjure thunder and lightning. But narratively speaking Volibear feels like he has more in common with the myth of Fenrir.

Edit: I know the devs are still debating their approach to Volibear's rework. I know some fans are hoping for Voli to maintain his "nobility". My fingers are crossed for less of that. I like the idea and it feels far more appropriate that the Freljord worship a bear-god of the 'wilderness' and a being who opposes civilization in its entirety. Makes his and Ornn's duality that much more poetic.

Its due to his portrayal in the short story Silence of the Damned. The story itself is great, masterfully written and really brings to life this primal, old god of war. Its got blood rituals and creepy imagery, things of that nature. I kind of resent it though, since the Volibear of that story is very different from how I view him and how I believe actual Volibear players view him. I view him as much more noble and calm. Don't get me wrong, I like both directions, but I hope they find a way to reconcile both identities.

My take is that war can be both noble and heroic OR horrifying and unknowable. Perhaps both identities of Volibear could represent both sides of war.

No he is a primal deity who scoffs at the way the new gods do things, general contempt for mount Targon and is someone who believes humanitys true path lies at their most base self and that if it were not for stepping off this path they would never be tempted by demons, darkin and even the void would prove no match.
