#2018 Lore Tournament: Day 17

Today, both of our stories take place in the cold and unforgiving Freljord. In the first story, the young man who would eventually become known as Brand seeks to find the truth through fire and force, while in the second story, Nunu and his mother, Layka, seek to find the truth through the songs of ice, freedom, and love.

From The Ashes by Aaron Dembski-Bowden Kegan Rodhe, the son of a healer in Rygann's Reach, once lived a life full of fear and mistrust, being the son of a mage. Now, he is the apprentice of Ryze, the Rune Mage, who is helping him to harness his own magical gifts. However, while Ryze tries to teach him to approach magic with a hand of patience, the young Kegan seems to be bent on finding a way to command magic with a hand of power, and burning vengeance...

##vs

Frozen Hearts by David Slagle Nunu, his mother Layka, and the rest of their Notai tribe are leaving one village for another. However, Nunu doesn't want to leave the village, and asks Layka why they have to go. In response, Layka tells him a story of the ways of their land, the freedom of their worshipped goddess, Anivia, and the task that she has given them: to bring their songs of love and joy to all the hearts of the Freljord.

I know it probably won't win, but Ryze, Brand, your story is awesome and emotional, but once again, NUNU IS ADORABLE. Vote for Frozen Hearts! Show the yeti rider some love!

EDIT: Okay seriously, were you guys listening to Redstone a couple of days ago? Stop downvoting stuff just because it doesn't agree with you.

I think that Nunu's story was amazing and lovely, and made me really hope he finds his mother in one piece, but didn't have as much substance as the tragic story of Kegan; a man who was thought to be on the verge of evil by his very birth, tossing and turning as his difficult life passed, and finally falling prey to his violent and cruel urge: once in the backstory, and once in a story we have yet to hear. This story also gives even more of a reason for Ryze to be frustrated and detached from people, which makes him a more full character that I want to see more of.
