Yeah, a lot of people have asked for this over the years. They did it with Trundle, Karma, and Sejuani, it's called a traditional skin. Technically, Gangplank has Captain Gangplank and Warwick to a lesser extent has Grey Warwick which both are a step closer to their original skins than their current model. They aren't called Traditional skins because, I dunno, maybe Riot thinks a portion of their fanbase are too stupid to put 2 and 2 together on that one. I got nothing. Especially Captain Gangplank is just Tradition Gangplank with a different name, after they said they were not going to do any more Traditional skins. They did give a reason why they're considered different, but it's a dumb reason.
Any way, there have been multiple pseudo-conflicting reasons given for why they don't do Traditional skins anymore. The first one I remember seeing is that they felt it was disrespectful to the artist who is doing the new design of the champion. The other is that the Traditional skins are not reflective of how the character is in the game's lore. Both of these I've always felt were terrible reasons. For one the artist is getting paid, that's their respect. Traditional skins are so you don't disrespect the old fanbase of the character. The second, well, it is legitimately hard to explain how little I care whether or not the skin I like is part of the world of Runeterra or any of the other skin worlds they have developed.
