@Riot, Out of the frying pan and into the fire (Yes, it is a Morde post)
Well I'm back and I wish i didn't have to be.
Don't take that out of context, I'm referring to the fact that something so disastrous has occurred that it has actually forced me to make another post on Mordekasier. I didn't think it was possible but long and behold, Riot has actually made the Mordekaiser crisis even worse than it was. Now before you go thinking this is another hate/flame post based on the rework, you would be mistaken. I have already made a post based on that and I feel no need to repeat myself. This post is about an actual change in League of Legends history as for the first time ever, they have deleted a champion from the game. You may think I'm exaggerating and i wish I was but gather around and I'll tell the story behind the curtain.
Everyone ready? Good lets begin.
This story is encoded in the most recent red post regarding Mordekasier by one Ant in Oz. I would normally just send a link but having it all here just helps comprehension of what I'm getting at.
Hey guys,
This wasn't a decision that was made lightly.
Mordekaiser had a lot going on with his thematic (he's a mage! He's in heavy armor! He's the first of the Undead! He can steal his enemy's souls! He's Magneto!).
Now while all of that is pretty cool, we felt that having so much going on made him a little bit confused as a character.
Looking at him more closely, it was the metal-mage stuff that didn't really seem to fit cohesively with everything else, or fit his background. Also, we made a move away from the metal-mage aspect in his visual effects recently, and as such, his "Master of Metal" title just didn't really seem to fit so well any more. We kept the metal references in his spells, though (which, as a metal fan myself, makes me happy).
In his longer bio (which will be released soon!) we've delved a little into who Mordekaiser was before he became the undying revenant we all know and love. Having explored his background a little more than we have previously, we figured the "Lord of Death" was a pretty fitting title for him.
Hope that gives a little insight into this change!
Cheers! Ant
This here is a story of its own so lets take it one piece at a time.
This wasn't a decision that was made lightly
I love a story that begins with irony, don't you? Does this remind us of a time when the Morde rework was on the PBE and despite the community pouring waves of posts on the boards begging not to do this yet they plowed on ahead. All that aside this suggests that considerable thought was dedicated in the renaming of Mordekaise'rs title. So lets give them the benefit of the doubt and see where the story continues.
Mordekaiser had a lot going on with his thematic (he's a mage! He's in heavy armor! He's the first of the Undead! He can steal his enemy's souls! He's Magneto!).
The story gives us a familiar setting. It gives us confirmation of the obvious which is fine, a story doesn't need to rush into complexity yet and even ties in some humor referring to Xmen. Notice the pretense in HAD when Ant describes his theme? It might just be foreshadowing the end of our story.
Now while all of that is pretty cool, we felt that having so much going on made him a little bit confused as a character.
Oh no! The story tells how our main character is engaged in mental conflict. Read the next Twilight book to see how he can over come it! On a more serious note the actual idea that Mordekaiser was confusing just as a character standpoint is contradicted by the fact that he simplified it well in his second line. He's mage : description of his role, He's in heavy armor : description of his attire, He's the first of the undead : giving a character a mysterious and unique background, He can steal an enemy's soul : connection to shadow isles , He's Magneto : Basically made his identity whole. I just see an interesting concept based on the information given and only by the information given (no need to validate points from external sources were dealing with this story here) If any one feels confused why not just make a sequel? You know write a whole two pages of lore if you have to instead of the one paragraph he has now. If you made him based on the factors you described then tell us why he is this way. A dynamic character such as the one just described just can't fit without true context so where will the story go? what will we learn?
Looking at him more closely, it was the metal-mage stuff that didn't really seem to fit cohesively with everything else, or fit his background. Also, we made a move away from the metal-mage aspect in his visual effects recently, and as such, his "Master of Metal" title just didn't really seem to fit so well any more. We kept the metal references in his spells, though (which, as a metal fan myself, makes me happy).
And here is the plot twist! We expect information based on what we had so far but instead we are rewarded with vague insight right at the beginning of this, I wonder what they saw when they looked closely. Was it the metal shards that flew during his q swing? What about the whirlwind of metal shredders tearing his surroundings to bits? Or was it his siphon that raised metal maces from fallen warriors to strike again once more? Did they see any of that is the right question. The clear answer is no they most certainty did not. Based upon the new particles they game him, it seems they already stripped his influence with metal long before this sudden name change would arrive. Then the story descends, saying it doesn't fit with his background. Well that would sure make sense if the context would actually support that fact. Our man is the inflicter of pain and based on the time period of this game being mostly mid-evil, its almost like the instruments of destruction are swords and arrows, both of which are crafted from metals. Of course there are exceptions but consider this, Zilean is technically a future and past dimensional being whose main method of damage is by throwing clocks at people. So if it can be said that metal objects are the main form of punishment then where does metal become unrelated to this man of pain? But we must continue, the story is not done.
In his longer bio (which will be released soon!) we've delved a little into who Mordekaiser was before he became the undying revenant we all know and love. Having explored his background a little more than we have previously, we figured the "Lord of Death" was a pretty fitting title for him.
A true Shakespearean tragedy people. This here is where its all revealed. So when an identity of a champ becomes complex, we change it then delve into the new ones identity with new lore so the old one never was then claim its the same everyone loves. Our story concludes here by basically stating that all the history books on Morde have now been burnt and that the new editions are here but wait, this is the key factor. Due to the fact that all history of Morde is gone then these new editions are not going to be called "new" they will be called "the only" or "the" edition as there's nothing left to justify any other option. Then we have the final line stating how the new title is more fitting which of course it is. The metal aspects from are practically gone and what metal properties went from being described as Magneto is now about as strong as a fridge magnet, only having any metal particles appear when someones nearby to hold your hand.
At this point they need to just actually rename him instead of his title. Nothing remains of other than his models like an old photograph reminding us of what he once was. If they wanted him to be an inflicter of pain they sure accomplished their goal with this rework except pain towards the players until they give him a VU then he will disappear for good.
