2019 Lore Tournament - Day 6: Halfway Between the Stars and Earth vs For Those Who Have Fallen

EDIT: The celestials win, for now. Halfway between the Stars and Earth moves on with 26 to 18 votes. #####~~ Holy Title, Batman~~

Why did I think it would be a good idea to pit both of the stories with the longest titles against each other? Only the Beast of Boleham Tower story is maybe a bit longer. Anyway, it's been a really long week for me (also caused by these posts) so I'm glad I can relax a bit. And to NA: Stay strong, the weekend is coming soon! https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/365550473429909504/648237903100510229/WT7mmUN.png

#####Souls of gods and souls of men, meet in cinders to ascend

Today, we embrace the eternal struggle of humanity against godhood. Determinism, human strength and free will all play an important part in the color stories of Soraka and Pantheon. A few things are to note here: Sorakas story is the oldest one in the tournament, recency bias may be a thing. I suggest you read up on both stories today. Also, Pantheon technically had a color story Spear of Targon, which was edited. If no other story releases (I think there will be one on Tuesday, but we shall see), it might go up against SftD on Day 13.

In the first story, Halfway between the Stars and Earth, Soraka is enjoying her tea on Mount Targon, when a visitor is outside. She scares away the wolves and brings the young girl inside. Tea Time. In the meantime, she tells a story about the fate woven in the stars that humans ignore far too often.

In the second story, For Those Who Have Fallen, Atreus, with the powers of the fallen Pantheon, joins the Ra-Horak in an effort to free Nerimazeth from a beast of pure energy. The Solari warriors can not hope to defeat the fallen Ascended, and yet a brave warrior puts forward her shield. Her name was Asose.

I love the way Soraka's story dealt with weakness. The girl in the story climbed the Mountain by herself because she hated being the only 'weak' one in the family. She was willing to throw her life away just for the chance to live up to her society's standards.

And Soraka stopped her. Soraka didn't tell her that she had to be strong to have value, but that she was already strong for making it this far. Soraka also told her that she would die if she kept going. Because sometimes a person's strength isn't enough, and that's okay. Sometimes they don't have the OP willpower to succeed in the face of overwhelming odds, and that's okay too. Like Soraka said, her paths are many. She doesn't have to die pointlessly to impress her family. She can chill out and have tea.

Pantheon's story is by far better. It shows an epic fight, as hopeless as it is, it carries emotional weight, it shows Atreus's will to fight against more powerful beings, and opens up many questions, like Fas said.

I like For Those Who Have Fallen because first, it features Xerath, second, it has a plot that could be grown to a short story if it was longer. It impacts the bigger picture, clarifies regional pieces and creates new questions. What is Xerath doing? Why is Solari losing power? Why is Solari so desperate to attack an ascended? Story happens in Nerimazeth, the city with proto Sun Disc. With that, it hinted a greater plot that might be built on conflict of 2 regions already bound by history.

Yeah okay look I know Fas (and probably half of the Boards) is gonna hate me but I'm rooting for Soraka. I just loved that story. It's calm and peaceful, it offers a nice change of pace. On a more personal note, I wasn't a fan of the writing style in For Those Who Have Fallen (no offense to Interlocutioner, the story is really good). It's a very good story, I just didn't have much impact on me? Maybe part of the problem comes from the fact that everyone was hyping up Pantheon and I was expecting something else? I don't know...

Anyway, two really good stories, but I'm voting for Halfway Between the Stars and Earth!

I like Soraka..... so it might be a bit bias But I feel it does a good job expanding upon and explaining what she is like and what she's doing

It pains me that these 2 are pitted against each so early in the tournament and I wish could vote for both.
Both stories show the strength of the Rakkor, the human inhabitants of Mt. Targon, and they don't glorify the Aspects and the Celestials although they are stories centered around those very characters Pantheon & Soraka.

It shows how much Targon as a region has to offer, and as a fan of the region, these stories put a smile on my face and I look forward to more stories like these.
