Should riot rework mundo into a jekyll and hyde theme?
Let's be honest,
is an old champ with a stat-check kit and a theme that while okay for the time is something they can clearly do better on. Since he's come out though, riot's tech had improved. Notably they've released champs like
,
, and
. I think each of these champs is note worthy in that they could each serve as a model for a Mundo rework. Yes riot could keep mundo as is, but given their history with reworks, let's call that unlikely. They want to do more, bigger, and better. That's why I've got a feeling, some kind of transformation is in the future for mundo.
Here's why I think this. Riot's trying harder to tell stories and this seems like the perfect opportunity to tell a story that homages the original inspirations within the game itself. Instead of showing the after results, we as players get to live through what's going on. I think that would provide a richer experience that will resonate with fans of a post-rework mundo even more. Mundo shouldn't be about the end result, he should be more about the conflict. The best way to show the conflict would be within the game itself. Instead of putting up a few words 90% of the players will never read, they'd experience it for themselves every time the play him in game.
So here are my thoughts on how this could best go down.

style
If riot goes this way, we could see a champ where the transformation from one form, Jeckyll, to the other as an inevitable thing. Mundo would start out in his most human form and slowly shift and transform into a monster. Every time he ranks up his ult, he's be less human and more like the mundo we are familiar with now. Maybe even riot could push his gameplay style to evolve.
and
are known as junglers with early game pressure that eventually turn into off-tanks. So maybe riot could make him go from AP assassin, to skirmisher, to bruiser, to full on tank. As his kit changes, his model would as well to reflect the take-over of his primal side. If riot really wants to flip they can also do it the other way, he starts out as a primal tank like he is now but over the course of the match he evolves into something else as his rational side regains control. So maybe you'd start with a brutish tank and slowly transform into something that needs more finesse as the game wears on. Either way, this theme would be one of a fated transformation. -
style
For this style of champ, Mundo would be someone who is always in flux. He'd probably have 2 gameplay styles for each of his forms, each with a different build path, and his gameplay would have a theme based on constantly working to stay or return to your desired form. This is a bit different than gnar in that you can kind of control when he transforms and have some ability to keep him there, but it is tenuous at best and the longer you stay in one form, the more you have to work to stay in it. This champion theme would be the one of eternal conflict and duality. Players would be tasked with either picking a side and optimizing for it, knowing there will be times when your build is going to be rough, or accepting the two natures of the champ and trying to split the difference. Philosophically, this is probably the most interesting option because it asks the player to answer the question: is it better to fight your fate and nature as much as you can or should you accept that other side of you. -
style
For this style rework, we'd have to start with a mundo who starts stuck in the middle of two worlds and has to make a choice and live with it. We'd have a champion in conflict and one side or the other will win out. However I think to differentiate this mundo from Kayn, riot should probably make his base form a good all-rounded generalist that has the best of both worlds and wants to push off the transformation as long as possible. The idea is you've got someone who gains strength from his internal conflict and that making this decision, which you will have to do, ultimately weakens him as he loses some of his power when one side or the other wins out. Gameplay wise, this version would have to be an early game champ who has some ability to push off the decision, but once it does happen his time to shine is over. TBH he should start falling off slightly before he has to make the decision as the conflict carries too high a burden. The idea is that you've got a choice you have to make, but you really don't want to make until it becomes necessary (terrible stat scaling on the base form perhaps). At that point, his gameplay will become a lot more focused and skill heavy based on the form that wins. Basically the player would be forced to sacrifice something, but he doesn't want to make a choice about it too soon (maybe poor base stats but great scaling on his other forms). So you should be doing the focus of your choice better, but you'll clearly miss the other half that you gave up.
In conclusion, while Mundo was a fine and iconic champ for his day, I think better tech would allow for a more complete experience. I think this would also provide more for the lore team to work with. Esp, option 2.
