Lorewise are Mecha Sol ships kamikaze?
Or do they have a sort of "drill", plasma thingy that makes them able to penetrate the enemies?

I think that them clipping through the enemies can be seen as a graphical clarity thing and that they are actually shooting the enemy as they fly by.
More than likely Kamikaze, Lore wise he probably "Creates" those ships
Lore-wise, base Aurelion Sol doesn't have stars orbiting him; he makes each new star
Mecha Aurelion Sol probably acts as the mothership for an entire fleet of those kinds of ships. He might even be able to make new ones. If they do have a "plasma thingie" it probably doubles as a force field. I can't see much reason to make the ships kamikaze when it's more effective to just have them fight.
