Bringing Cho'Gath into league's lore.

As it stands, Cho'Gath has no place in the lore of the current league of legends. Based on what I've read from writer comments concerning him (and the complete dearth of presence from him in stories/most discussions about the void and unique void creatures) all I can conclude is that he is your run-of-the-mill, completely ordinary voidspawn. Not particularly strong, not particularly special.

In fact, I would go so far as to say in his current form Cho'Gath isn't special at all. That would make him quite literally the only champion in the game whose lore leaves him as not a 'legend' in any sense of the word. Even Rammus, who previously was just an animal, has had his lore updated to make him some sort of immortal shuriman demigod who's always down for some beetle-munching. All this without having him say much more than "ok."

Lets take a look at the other void champions currently slithering around in this lovely game.

##Tied to Overarching Void Plot These voidspawn have a vile purpose, and are likely voidspawn either picked out by the watchers for their unique traits, or engineered by them to further their own ends. They look to have some important role in the Void's invasion of Runeterra.

Kog'Maw: Probably the closest to Cho in terms of lack of purpose or uniqueness, but even the void puppy is here for some specific reason, gifted to Malzahar as a part of the Watcher's plans. It's just that that reason has not yet been elaborated on and his personality does not betray much of it other than "terror coming."

Rek'Sai: The only Voidspawn with no discernible personality due to her bestial nature. She is a higher class of voidspawn, much like Vel'Koz, as the queen of an entire hive of lesser void creatures. Controls a large swathe of desert, rendering crossing difficult. She falls more toward a folklore/mythos character than other Voidspawn. It has been speculated that she uses her tunnels, and the tunnels of her children, to construct a massive portal to the void deep within the Sai. This would likely herald an invasion on a scale rivalling the Great Void War.

##Voidspawn Individuals These voidspawn adapted unpredictably after emerging from the churning darkness of the Void. Their time on Runeterra has given them personality, and individual purpose separate from the machinations of the watchers. Whilst not world-destroying threats like those above, they become legends due to their single-minded pursuit of their own goals and their capacity for growth. They are exceptional for breaking the shackles of their masters and pursuing their own ambitions and hungers above all else. They offer us unique insights into the nature of the void and the latent potential of all Voidspawn.

Vel'Koz: Confirmed to be a higher class of void creature who has developed some level of independence from his origins in the Void. A danger in his own right because of his capacity for learning, and current obsession with obtaining information about time travel. Speculated in his bio to be the original voidspawn on Runeterra, which by itself makes him a compelling character whom I would love to see more of in the story. He has seen a lot, and can be used to get a lot of answers about the world's past. (He was a participant in the Great Void War, almost certainly.)

Kha'Zix: A voidspawn who used his unique traits to ascend beyond his initial, pitiful form. He may have started as the usual pure-hunger voidspawn, but he too has grown into an exceptional individual with his time on Runeterra. His goal is to become the apex predator, and his hunt for favorable traits to appropriate means that he will continue to inject himself into the stories of the great and powerful. His relationship with Rengar, among the greatest Vastayan warriors currently alive (which is quite the feat), as an equal and rival means he will always have some lore relevance as well. Of the current Void creatures, Kha'Zix is second only to Cho'Gath in lack of relevance to the overarching Void plot. He is more of an offshoot.

Then we reach Cho'Gath. Purpose? Nil. Change since emerging into Runeterra? Nil. He is a big, hungry boi with no ties to anything and no greater purpose or potential for change. He's about as legendary as a krakenwyrm. Yes, they're big and scary and people will tell tales of slaying one, but that's just the nature of the creature. It's not unique in that regard as it could be replaced by literally any other member of its species without any meaningful change to its role in the story. Cho'Gath could be literally any voidspan and still serve the same purpose: be a lower-tier, non-adapted, little-personality void beast who during a void conflict would merely be one of the crowd of creatures who had been cut down during the first attack rather than something that stood out on the frontlines.

##What could Cho'Gath be if his lore were updated? I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter, and I will place my own below as an example.

I've been working on a for-fun Cho'Gath VGU for a little while now, so what I put below is going to come from that. (Keep an eye out for the full thing by the end of the month!)

Cho'Gath is an ancient monstrosity from the Void, tailored by the mysterious watchers as a method of permanently putting down Targonians, and as a weapon for crushing the morale of those who would stand against them. Inside his vile heart churns a near-bottomless sea of Void energy, turning him into a walking nuclear reactor that poisons and corrupts the world around him. He gets just as much delight from crushing the hope and faith of his victims as he does from consuming them, body and soul.

Beneath is a little short bio thingy that i just did up to match. Forgive any errors in spelling and grammar, I tried to catch them but I'm only human.

Upon his birth from the all-consuming womb of the void, Cho'Gath's unique trait expressed itself rather quickly. The things he consumed did not die. Their consciousness, their souls, were imprisoned inside of him as their physical forms were dissolved to fuel the growth of his own. In this, the Watchers saw... potential. Cho'Gath was pulled back into the void to be groomed into a weapon. For centuries he gorged on his kin and was suffused with the vile magics of the watchers. When Cho'Gath re-emerged into the world, he was nearly unrecognizable as the whelp he had once been. He was titanic, his fangs longer than any spear, and his armor far too thick for any weapon to fully penetrate. Against the backdrop of the great frozen wastes to the north of the Freljord, he resembled a living mountain. When the first aspect to face him fell in battle and never returned to her fellow Targonians, the nature of the threat became very clear. Cho'Gath laughed and taunted those 'gods', as he relished in the look on their faces when they realized that for the first time in millennia they were vulnerable.
For Targonians, death was never the end. But when this monster claimed them, they were his for eternity. His threats, spoken with a vile tongue, promised them that what awaited was a fate worse than any death.

When they finally injured him, their horror only intensified. Inside of this creature was a seemingly bottomless mass of void magic which spilled out and contaminated the area around it whenever it was wounded. Not that the wounds lasted long, as Cho'Gath masterfully shifted its biomass to close them. If Cho'Gath was killed, the amount of void energy that would spill from his corpse would have been cataclysmic.
In the end, it took a great feat of magic to bring the beast to heel as it marched to the south. The ice beneath its feet was opened up and as the creature attempted to pull his titanic bulk back to the surface he was imprisoned deep beneath the ice.

Countless lifetimes have passed since the day that the Terror of the Void fell, and Cho'Gath has finally re-emerged. He is a small, spindly creature now after having shed the vast majority of his biomass to free himself from the ice. He now works his way south, devouring everything in his path and blighting the world around him. And he's only getting bigger.

Bam. There's what I've pieced together for him. He now has purpose, to grow and regain his lost form and herald the final void incursion on Runeterra. He's now genuinely terrifying, poisoning the world and permanently imprisoning those he consumes in a writhing sea of void magic inside of him (that could be... say, the inspiration for the imprisonment magic used on the Darkin?). He also delivers on the fantasy of growing into a giant kaiju monster more effectively. I intentionally took inspiration from sources like Godzilla, Gamera, Pacific Rim, Cloverfield, etc. Now, you can feel more powerful as you gain Feast stacks and close in on your true form, you can feel like a true terror as you run down your fleeing foes knowing the fate that awaits them. He has more lore tie-ins now which makes him feel more like a part of the universe rather than a forgotten relic who seems to be getting pushed further and further to the wayside.

This one goes a little far because it's tied in to my fan-vgu of him, but just take it as an example of the sheer amount of potential that lies in a giant, growing monster.

This is of course not the only possible route to fix him. Just one that I thought was cool. I'd love to hear what the boards (or a Rioter) thinks of where Cho'Gath is currently, and what he has the potential to become with some work.

TLDR: I put a bunch of effort in the post so I'd appreciate if you gave it a read. Cho'Gath has no place in the lore and is currently nothing special, and that really should change since it negatively impacts his gameplay fantasy and we need a real big monster with a name.

I love your take on his soul-trapping being a solution to dealing with the Targonian Aspects.

Edit: And also the way you tied it into the Darkin. Because it means Targon is completely okay with using Void tactics as long as it's for the "greater good" and that's exactly the kind of utilitarian horror I've come to expect from Targon.

Cho is a super intelligent Void general. General as in the commander of their armies. The fact that people mistake him for a big dumb monster because of his looks is part of what makes the void so alien, we assume that since hes a big brute he must be a simple monster but hes not. Or at least he was with his old lore

In fact in the original lore it was kind of implied summoning him was a mistake, that he was only here because he wanted to be so that he could plan his future incursion.

I dont like turning Chogath into a pet of the Watchers.

He can be more than that.

I would like him to be keep as he was in the old lore, a powerfull and smart creature that wants to destroy those who summoned him... devouring those hideous creatures that wanted to use his power as a tool.

What do you mean by "summoners dont exist anymore"? Im not talking about those humans from the IoW... im talking about the Watchers.

I used to think it would be a good idea if Cho'gath had been dormant in the ocean for a few centuries, munching on the excessively large sea monsters that lurk in-around there, since I would assume the ocean has better food source for Cho than the surface world does.

Idk really but it would explain why a monstrosity capable of Kaiju level destruction has so far had no impact in the lore setting.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting but your idea gives me "mindless, instinct driven beast" vibes and I prefer he stay sentient, intelligent and malicious while trying to bring about a new Void invasion. I think he should still be in the Void atm because a Voidborn of his caliber shouldn't just wander around like Kha or Kog and be relatively unknown - his arrival should herald a point of no return and plunge the known world into an apocalyptic Void conflict imo. It would be cool if Rek'sai's portal is for him (and maybe his army) to finally come through.

edit: It would be awesome if Cho was the entity in Aurelion Sol's short story. That's what I'd like.

A pulsing sickness lingers in the air. From the epicenter of the corruption, I feel a will… hungry and indomitable, and far from the typical mindlessness I’m accustomed to from these Voidborn aberrations. The pulsating wound on reality yawns and buckles, distorting and warping all it touches. Whatever exists on the other side is laughing.

This is not the first of its kind I’ve had to deal with, but this one feels different, and I can’t help but admire the marvelously terrifying manipulation of the barriers between realms. Few beings could fathom its complexities, let alone possess the sheer magnitude of power needed to rend the fabric of existence. In my heart, I know a wound so exquisite could never be orchestrated by scuttling creatures. No. There must be more behind this intrusion. I shudder at the thought of what kind of entity is capable of inducing such a volatile rift.

Chogath Has very little personality traits and outside of his feast mechanic but even despite his very few voice lines he does get one point across that i feel you missed. Cho'gath unlike any other void creature Hates.

"You are such hideous creatures"

"You are a scourge upon the world"

"there will be no end to your suffering"

Cho'gath gets more personal with his prey than any other void spawn, khazix displays smugness and joy at killing and consuming, velkoz is analytical as ever but still expresses calm superiority over destroying their frail forms, kogmaw merely consumes and reksai is hardly any different

This is best exemplified in his taunt which ill link because i just love how he emphasizes himself with those last three words

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/5/5f/Greenterror.taunt.ogg/revision/latest?cb=20120615005715

I feel that if and when cho'gath changes, hatred has to be his defining characteristic. Hatred that he was a common spawn, hatred at the world that he's trapped on and what would be interesting is hatred at his fellow void spawn.

Edit: I havent read his biography in literal years and funnily enough hes specifically stated to be a creature of malice. Guess that means they did a good job.

i like the idea of him being the ultimate weapon against Targon like how Typhon is the superweapon and strongest monster that fights the greek gods in greek mythology. In fact all the greek gods have to work together to take him down, they can't win alone. So this is a good way to tie Cho in as his presence could mean the end is near and that all the Targonians and aspects need to stop fighting and start working together. The idea that Cho is hard to kill cause he can just shed his large form and escape as something smaller is also a good idea because it means if he ever gets defeated he will come back as the Targonians can't kill him due to another brilliant idea, that fact that his wounds just cause more corruption

ik that many fans are attached to a few things, Cho's intelligence, the fact that he's a general of the void, and that he rebels against his masters, among others. I would say don't feel the need to stick to those things because sometimes as its been said fans will assign their own idea of champ regardless of whether or not that aspect of the champ really exists, 2nd things change, and Riot has caused some champs to change. His rebel aspect most likely has to go because although it makes sense against the Summoners, it makes little sense against the Watchers, so just because one aspect of him existed...its gone now, dont try to attach it to another source. Its debateable whether or not the intelligence and rank stay

All i say is try to give him a character that some people can like, thats where monster champs struggle.

Reviving necro- threads which already had their time to shine is against Universal Rules and as such I will be locking this thread to make sure it lands at the bottom of the howling abyss. I would strongly encourage looking at how old a thread is before commenting on it.

Should there be any questions regarding this action feel free to reach out in our Moderation Discord.

Really compelling ideas for Chogath. I like that idea of how he consumes - he doesn't just devour the physical form, but he's a living prison for those he gets to. It puts a rather unique spin on the whole "great devourer" theme. The bio also gives him a place in the larger world because, yeah, he just kind of "there" instead of actually being some influential figure.

The only thing though is that, even with this short bio, he still is lacking in a personality. He has a goal and a purpose, sure, but he still comes off as just a mindless animal when it's generally considered he's supposed to be a sort of "general" of the Void legions.

Two of the quotes I think can be worked off of are "Your races are a scourge upon the world!" and "You are such... hideous creatures!". Building off those lines, I would like to see a Cho'Gath who doesn't just destroy and kill because he's made for that purpose by some other entities. He does it because he thinks anything not like him is disgusting and inferior, especially Runeterrans, and that they need to be purged from existence. An extreme form of "social darwinism" or "eugenics", an alien being who knows he's biologically superior to us and has a right to slaughter us like how we may exterminate a termite colony. Also, perhaps Cho'Gath isn't, and never has been, fully under the Watcher's influence. Yes, he's a natural Voidborn, and yes he's working with the Void; however, it's for his own benefit. Cho'Gath could be the first Voidborn where, instead of the Watchers using him to their ends, he's using them to his. Though a product of the Watchers, unlike the others he's always been self-aware and had a strong sense of self, so he consciously uses the Void's strength and his creators' magics to fulfill his own personal goals. This would make Chogath stand as his own character and could lead to future stories, such as him outright usurping the Watchers once he no longer has a use for their "gifts", or his regards to other Voidborn like Khazix who have actually mingled with the "repulsive genes". Although this may put him in a similar vein as Velkoz, I think the difference could be Vel'Koz is actually working for the Watchers (whether knowingly or unknowingly) while Cho'Gath is just using them as a means to an end. A tool that can surpass his masters.

SpecterVonBaren8/3/2018, 7:24:37 PM1 votes

Really? Cho'Gath has the MOST purpose of the void champions. He's the one that is specifically on Runeterra to prepare the Void for invading it. All other Void champs are purely there for reasons only significant to themselves.

Oleandervine8/3/2018, 7:49:11 PM1 votes

I think you're not looking at the end game here. Cho'Gath has deliberately been left out of the lore for reasons. People have suspected he's the strong presence in the Void tear that cackled at Aurelion before he nuked it with a star, and if Cho is indeed that presence, that would make him one of the most powerful entities of the Void, if he can make a celestial god dragon shiver. Cho is definitely due for a VGU. He looks like he is the actualization of 3 year old's drawing of a monster at current, and his model has shown it's age very badly. I think he's probably going to bring about a larger Void event when he's eventually VGU'd, because I think they're going to be making him one of the most powerful beings to enter from the Void (and he is, because he just grows and grows and grows from consuming), so I say just give it some time and let it pan out.

Ganen8/4/2018, 1:04:23 AM1 votes

I liked your story so i made my own version: Cho'gath was a monster that was made by the watchers to fight the ancient acended (aka darkin) but was defeated and fell into a great slumber which buried him under the desert of shurima.

After decades something wakes Cho'gath up and he is VERY hungry. The hunger doesn't stop and cho'gath feels weakened, fragile and small. Cho'gath wanders around the desert and starts consuming "life energy" from populated cities (Kinda like a vaccum) he continously gets stronger and BIGGER.

However nothing has enough energy to sustain cho'gath for long and thus he seeks to consume the world runes to eventually become even stronger then he ever was. And with this power he would seek to even consume the gods and surpass his own masters. Becoming the embodiment of the void itself.
