NAUTILUS THREAD: Would he accept a pact from Kalista/Tammy? and misc. headcanon

KING OF MASKS·3/1/2016, 11:07:47 PM·12 votes·5,916 views

I was just thinking about Naut and his admittedly anemic lore: "Guy gets betrayed on a boat, his fellow sailors leave him to drown in black goo, and he wakes up at the bottom of the ocean. He then walks a lot until he reaches the League of Legends, where he fights. P.S. Might have also fought the Black Mist one time when it was attacking Bilgewater." And thought I'd start up a little discussion thread here on our lovely Boards (beta).

Nautilus is a champion all about revenge, right? It's his driving purpose in life/unlife. Just take a gander at these quotes: "I will have vengeance." "They will pay." "Find the guilty."

So one very obvious way of expanding Naut's lore and integrating him into the post-retcon Runeterra is to make connections with a couple of other vengeance-themed champions... like Kalista, for instance, whose whole shtick is aiding the betrayed in seeking revenge against their betrayers. Sounds like a done deal, right? Kalista x Naut ship confirmed! But nope. Kal has nothing to say to Naut in-game, there's no connection via Friends/Rivals... there's nothing.

Another possible candidate is Tahm Kench, who doesn't deal specifically in retribution but presumably has the ability to lend Naut a hand (possibly even restore him to his normal sailor-y condition?). Nope, nothing here either.

The only connections Naut has to other champions and places in Runeterra are 1) Fizz and Nami being listed as his rivals, and 2) his defense(?) of Bilgewater against the Black Mist. Rito didn't give Kalista any voiced interactions with him, even though it seems obvious, and they didn't give Tahm any interactions with him either (less obvious, but still notable). And in case you were wondering, Fizz/Nami have nothing to say to the Titan either, despite each of them supposedly being a rival (note: Fizz was released before Nautilus, but the point here is that there's no source behind these "rivalries" other than rito saying so).

Hm.

So why is Nautilus being isolated like this? Three possibilities:

  1. It's a shameful, shameful oversight by Narrative.
  2. Narrative has future plans for Naut, possibly ones that involve curtailing his obsession with revenge and/or emphasizing his relationship with his fellow sea creatures (i.e. the two fish listed above). 3) Nautilus himself just doesn't give a fuck is the cause of his isolation.

So that's the crux of this thread. If offered help by the likes of Kalista or Kench, would Nautilus really bite? The more I think about it, the more certain I am that Naut wouldn't even give them the time of day. He wouldn't give anyone the time of day. As his character stands now, he has zero reason to interact with any other character save for asking around for traitorous sailors -- and that assumes that he even remembers their names or faces.

This is getting into headcanon territory, but to me Nautilus comes across as the kind of guy who ignores shortcuts. And obviously not because of pride or anything; his tunnel vision has simply become so great that the possibility of a shortcut doesn't even occur to him. In fact I question whether places or people register with him at all. It's possible he woke up, found himself at the bottom of the ocean with nothing to do but start walking, and it's just been so goddamn long that he's become numb to literally everything, except for his betrayal and his ability to put one foot in front of the other.

Nautilus isn't really a "vengeance" champion. He is a perpetual motion machine. His friends, his family and his betrayers are all long dead, but the concept of revenge is the only thing keeping him sentient. Nature does its best to slowly erode his body and mind as he wanders the world, seeking the unobtainable... forever.

Ahem. You can argue the merits of having a character in your story who doesn't interact with anyone and simply wanders around, occasionally destroying something in the way (i.e. Black Mist), but I think it's pretty neat.

tl;dr naut is best champ gg ez

(Standard Bioluminescence disclaimer: I'm not on the Narrative team, etc. etc.)

I like the idea that Nautilus is more of a hands on type of guy.

For Kalista, she brings vengeance to the helpless at a terrible cost - but Nautilus doesn't seem helpless to me. Then with Tahm Kench, he seems to immediately and 'easily' give people what they most desire - but Nautilus doesn't seem the type to want to make this quick and easy on anyone.

I've no information to back this up, but it's possible that the crew of Nautilus' ship (if that continues to be canon in the future) may already be dead - maybe even of old age. I'm not sure how long it's been. Maybe he seeks out the descendants of that fateful crew like some inherited doom. A mild mannered Piltover bookkeeper who's grandfather was a sailor, might not know the doom that walks the seabed for his blood...

(Headcanon and speculation. Nothing of what you see here is OFFICIAL RIOT INFOZ or anything. Plx no pitchforks.)

Upvoted for not mispelling canon :D

Really cool read, about a really cool champion.

Nautilus has so much potential for lore, and the only lore we've gotten so far is a slight mention of him taking on the black mist by himself. Which is badass, but just leaves something to be desired, because it's just a mention of what he did.

Kalista not having Naut lines pissed me off when she was released, he was the first 6300 I saved for. Then riot made Fizz and Nami his "rivals" when I feel like at worst he might get sick of fizz's shit and at best he would likely ignore them.

That being said, I'm fairly certain your evaluation of him being numb to his surroundings would be accurate. After spending god knows how long surrounded by utter darkness only going forward, he probably barely notices the things around him. That plus his sheer size makes him seem more like a walking force of nature not really interacting with anyone.

STILL Kalista definitely should've said something about him, Tahm maybe couldve said something

Also why doesn't Kindred have lines for Trynd and Olaf? Trynd becomes so angry that he cannot die and Olaf is actively seeking death, THEY SHOULD HAVE LINES

Nautilus Plenty of guilty people around if he expanded his horizons of revenge to not just him.

Maybe he's not even losing his mind. He could be just strolling by the beach on a normal day chilling. Then suddenly he hits someone with an anchor and drags his victim screaming and gurgling for air, under the water.

I like to think that even if Kalista offered Nautilus the soulbound pact, he wouldnt be able to accept it, as whatever eldritch horror of the deep that claimed him clings tighter to his soul than the call of the shadow isles. Greater evil warding off evil, if you will.

I dont think Tahm Kench would seek out Nautilus as a potential victim. With how powerful Nautilus is show to be lore wise, Tahm might be biting off more than he can chew and he knows that. Better to prey on weak and desperate mortal men to sate his hunger.

That's pretty interesting, i gotta admit

I'm not sure, but I know for a fact that I want to see more of the Kalista-Graves pact what with Graves forgiving TFate. I wrote a bloody fanfic for that :P

When it comes to Kench, I feel slightly dissapointed that his story potential is completely wasted. A lot of existing champions struggle to acomplish their earthly goals, yet none was confirmed to sign a pact with him. Come on, make that Miss Fortune pay.

Nautilus has so much about vengeance, but he wouldn't accept a pact from Kalista or Tahm Kench.

Kalista is all about helping the helpless get their revenge. Nautilus certainly isn't helpless.

Tahm Kench's pacts are more tricks to help people achieve their dreams, only to trick them later on by making them pay with their life. I doubt that Kench would actually offer Nautilus any kind of deal, and if anything he would try to stay as far out of Naut's way as possible considering the titan might possibly tower over the king.
