DeadEye; Death or Emancipation?

There has been so much speculation going around concerning the circulating teasers, so many interesting suppositions and ideas, from a new champion to a new line of skins. The most prevalent discussion surrounds what exactly is going on with four beloved champions of League: Zed, Sona, Garen, and Vi. The teasers for each character have left quite an impression on the community if the number of threads are any indication, and though we are already drowning in rampant speculation, I would like to offer my own interpretation.

Death has been the most popular assumption brought forth by fans, and in a game where killing is the primary means of achieving success it is logical to assume that is the subject of these teasers. However, as pointed out by counterarguments, it would be a shameful waste if Riot simply killed off four champions who have yet to progress beyond their introductory lore. So how could they possibly involved with this mysterious development?

Truth.

Odd, I know, but bear with me. Garen, Sona, Zed, and Vi all have "fissures", so to speak, in their lore, details that present serious internal conflict.

To begin with, Garen is obviously infatuated with Katarina, while simultaneously being thrilled at the prospect of fighting an enemy that can match him on and off the battlefield. He is a soldier of Demacia, its paragon of patriotic fervor and absolute conviction in its righteousness. Yet, he feels something besides contempt for an underhanded assassin of a nation that has stood in opposition of his own for countless years. From what we have gathered over the years, thanks to Lux's and more recently Fiora's lore, is that Demacia is a totalitarian state. The law is life, and to disobey warrants nothing short of death. The Measured Tread is a tool for indoctrination, the traditions of the aristocracy a means of keeping them in line, everything is built around empowering the state. If Demacia demands you give up your child to military service, it will be done, no questions asked.

Garen's feelings for Katarina are not only dangerous, but should be impossible, yet they remain; his interest is tearing him apart.

With Sona, things are not quite so complex, but no less significant. The Maven of Strings is an artist, a damn good one at that, so good, that Noxus, the antithesis of her adopted nation, appreciates her work, as exemplified by Swain's opinion on Sona's performance. She could very well be a celebrity of Valoran, if not Runeterra. Though there is little external conflict to trouble her, internal strife could very well exist. Sona is an orphan, a woman with no past beyond the instrument she carries and Ionia, where she was found. Perhaps most disturbing of all, with the Institute of War's removal and the summoner's that staffed it, there is absolutely no means for Sona to speak. At this point in time, Sona literally has no voice.

Sona cannot speak, she cannot sing, she can't even scream; maybe all she wants is for people to hear Sona, not her strings.

Zed is much easier to analyze. He is this twisted ball of volatile emotions that has everything wants, and nothing at all. From his earliest memories he wanted to prove his worth, to show everyone he was skilled and strong. Most of all, he wanted recognition from his master. Instead, he killed his master, destroyed his only home, and brought years, perhaps centuries, of tradition crashing down. Zed achieved power and recognition, just not the way he wanted.

Maybe some small part of Zed, some faded memory of the boy he was, regrets the choice he made.

Finally, we have Vi, a rambunctious, loose-cannon that prefers to think with her fists instead of her head. She is the Piltover Enforcer, a reformed vigilante who fights to keep her city clear of far more destructive trouble makers. Except, it's not her city, not according to Ekko. Vi was not born in Piltover, she just woke up there. Before she put on her gauntlets to rescue miners, she was a nobody who lived on the streets, and before that, she might as well not have existed. The marvel of engineering Vi uses to punch through her problems can't pummel what isn't there; everything that was before she started stealing to survive is nothing. Vi doesn't know her life before Piltover, not even her own name.

Vi is the Piltover Enforcer, a bully on the right side of the law with hands the size of her ego; maybe she's just tired of wearing a badge as the only thing that defines her.

Of course, all these problems are never mentioned, these champions hardly talk about their issues, or even acknowledge them. Perhaps this "DeadEye" isn't interested in death, or inflicting harm, at least not intentionally; it's not a matter of what they want, but showing the world who they really are inside.

What if DeadEye pulls the truth from those who would deny it? What if it's goal is not death, but emancipation, regardless of how much it hurts? After all, the truth will set you free.

This is the most believable speculation I've heard thus far...............well done. I figured there had to be some connection between all 4 of them and their lores. If we are getting anew champion, what kind of champ would you like to see?

I hope it is either an ap marksman or another mage.

Gapybo1/1/2016, 7:22:03 PM14 votes

Nicely written. DeadEye dispels the shadows these individuals shrouded their inner conflicts in and basically forces them to light.

What if Deadeye is targeting each of the champion's source of power?

Zed did not gain his power until PEERING into the box upon which the powers were bestowed upon him. By removing him of his eyesight, you remove him of what gave him his power. (Shakey, I know)

Sona uses the etwahl to express her self, or speak if you will. You could argue that not everyone could use the etwahl and the power to unlock it remains within oneself. Specifically the source being the users vocal cords. By removing her vocal cords, you did her of her power.

Garen's love for his country and his people drive him to be the prime example of Demacian culture and gives him the strength to carry out any mission he is given. By removing his heart, you did Garen of his will to keep fighting and moving forward, thus he powerless.

Vi's power lays within her gauntlets. These are the tools with which she carries out all justice in Piltover. By destroying the gauntlets, Deadeye successfully removes her source of power and renders her useless.

Deadeye the Jhin (Riot's take on real world Djinn) granted each champ there one personal wish. Power to further themselves along in life for their own personal reasons, and now he is back to claim the price.

Zed wanted power, and gained it through sight, thus his site is now removed as payment. Sona wanted a voice, and was given one, and now has her vocal cords removed. Garen needed the strength to burden his love for an enemy and remain loyal to his country, and pays his heart in return. Vi wanted the power to save those that need saving, and was given the gauntlets to do so, and now has to give them up.

Just my thoughts on the situation, what do you all think?

DevilishMetal1/1/2016, 7:44:31 PM7 votes

Hey, I'd belive it. It honestly sounds really cool. But I have one question.

You mention Jhin/Deadeye's goal wasn't necessarily to kill- just to show the truth. I wonder if HE has any internal conflict about killing?

Sailor Miku1/2/2016, 7:15:51 AM6 votes

You give a very insightful look into Deadeye's (or Jhin's) motives.

Mind if I add some little tidbits as well? It's the factor of where each of these four have been struck.

Zed is struck in the eye, that much we can assume from how he's depicted. He wanted recognition from his master, yes, but he was so blinded by his lust for power that he caused the downfall of the Kinkou. For the one blinded by shadow, the eye is run through; he is now forced to see the truth.

Sona is struck in the throat - a significant place made even more symbolic due to her muteness. Interestingly enough, in her League judgment prior to the retcon, a voice in her memory told her that the etwahl would be the only voice she would ever need, that it would suffice in a way that not even her own voice could achieve. However, I believe you are right in the aspect that she wants people to hear her, and not the strings; the strings are not her, not if they had the mind to kill her beloved adoptive mother. For the mute, the throat is run through; now, she must accept that she has no voice, and may very well never come to possess one.

Garen is struck through the heart. His lore states that rumors were started of him being breathless for reasons other than exhaustion from his duel with Katarina; this, as well as Tahm Kench's taunts towards him and Katarina reinforce that he has feelings for her (and vice-versa for Katarina). But in an aristocratic and totalitarian society like Demacia's, Garen has to find a way to keep his feelings in check (and he attempts to do so with the rationalization that Katarina is a worthy opponent on the battlefield). But his feelings, as you said, oppose his indoctrinated duty towards Demacia. For the one torn between his personal feelings and his duty for his kingdom, the heart is run through; now he must make a choice in what is most likely the most important decision in his life.

Vi is struck on her fists. For a woman who likes to punch first, and then ask questions WHILE punching, the breaking of the gauntlets is symbolic. You do bring up an excellent point that she might perhaps be tired of wearing a badge as a means of defining who she is, but that would leave her without anything to define who she could be- wait a second. You are one hell of a Superb Villain.

Deadeye's actions would force Vi to define herself - who she is, and/or was. It would force her to carve her own path, one that is free of any labels. For the one weary of wearing labels and badges, the gauntlets are thus run through; now she must make her own path forward, but this time, without her gauntlets to make a door for her.

Interestingly enough, in each picture, the shadows are being dispelled by Deadeye's actions. He is forcing them to bear the truth, without the shadows to hide them. And, with all the speculation going around, Deadeye seems to be almost a Neutral/Chaotic Good in terms of his motives; he doesn't care how much it hurts them, he does it because he believes that it is the right thing to do. Deadeye, it seems, aims not to kill; rather, he aims to free, to free those who have caged themselves.

I have just figured each picture was one of Taric's abilities and the whole emerald, opal, sapphire, and ruby thing. Maybe Zed is dazzled, Sona healed with imbue, Garen's armor shredded by shatter. Vi, not sure, maybe radiance gives her enough AD she doesn't need the gloves.

Outrageous

I really hope there is something else in this event/release other than death. I could just not stand it if this was just to make the new character darker and edgier because he killed four others.

kitcat3001/1/2016, 8:09:28 PM3 votes

I noticed you left out that Sona's instrument is also perfectly capable of killing on its own.

I know the league isn't cannon anymore, but what was revealed in her flashback could still be, and hold some sort of significance.

This is my opinion but, I feel as if Lux would have been better if this was about their inner feelings. This is just my idea but if it was Lux her full lore states she was forced into the military and suffers depression but keeps a happy face and attitude but is dying inside. Joining the military and the League of Legends was all forced upon her by her parents because she says she has nothing else in her life she doesn't do anything to stop it because she can't. What if she wanted to escape those restraining bonds and live out her life the way she wants to and this is just a facade that is binding her from escaping. Just my little idea cause Lux's full lore is the most surprising and interesting one i've read so far. Also ahem "Void Lux skin?" xD.

This is actually close to what i was thinkingt i never agreed with the death scenario because all og them seem to be targeted strength/weakness so to speak sonas voice garens heart zeds head... ya know DrMundo im not so good with words

This was awesome to read, nice job.

As a Garen Main, I am giddy with excitement to see what happens. You're right on point about him.

Melledoneus1/2/2016, 12:38:59 AM2 votes

I couldn't have said it better.

Some points worth mentioning...

Zed is being pierced in the eye. This can symbolize how he turned a blind eye to tradition, or how he lacked the foresight to see where his actions would take him.

Another possibility is that it represents how he saw the secrets never meant for man, and how those same visions gave him a drive that may or may not be his.

Sona is having her throat slit. This one is easy to talk about, as this most directly represents her voice. She lives in a world of sound, but she can never contribute to it. The only thing representing her is her instrument, and she is seen breathing out some sort of smoke, which can mean one of two things.

One: Sona is expending an effort to speak, to make a sound, to scream to the world. Two: That smoke represents her voice... delicate, fleeting, and the result of a burning desire within her to break her silence.

Garen is being pierced in the heart. The heart, as most of us should know, represents love. Garen loves his nation and a woman beyond his reach except in the most bloody of places: the battlefield. He is torn between his nation which he swore to protect and the woman he loves so dearly. The decision between duty and desire.

Vi is breaking free of her gauntlets. The gauntlets represent the shell she created for herself, in order to protect the fragile, confused little girl inside. Vi's greatest fears are locked away behind a tough, stubborn, reckless law enforcer who can solve everything with violence and brute force. She was never a bad person, as she is empathic and would put human life over material gain any day of the week. Her street days just made her rough around the edges.

Jinx is the only criminal who has ever evaded Vi and made a fool of her. This makes Vi very insecure, as she feels the same weakness and helplessness as the days where she woke up with not even her real name. For this, she relentlessly chases down the maniacal anarchist, hoping to end this torment and maybe... just maybe... find out if this girl knows about her past.

From what I can see I've come to the conclusion of Deadeye kills them from the inside. Zed is being killed through his eyes, potentially him being naive? or his quote " The unseen blade is the deadliest", the roses I assume is the peace which lives inside of him yet no one knows he desires it, plus roses or plants in general don't grow without sunlight and Zed is all to do with Shadows. Also I believe if Zed we're to be blinded he could never fight again. Sona cannot speak and used to perform in concerts, we see her throat being shot as if she desires to speak, if Sona desires speaking so much, shooting her throat would mean she could never speak at all. The butterflies may be to do with getting "butterflies" before performing in her shows. Garen has a "bullet" through either his heart or shoulder, he is clearly not dead which to me seems like Deadeye wants to injure his targets to stop them from fighting. If Garen's shoulder were to be injured, he could never be able to use his sword again. The cracked face symbolizes how he can "crack" and not be the patriot, strong soldier of Demacia. Vi is nothing without her gauntlets, so them being taken off her would mean she couldn't fight, making them her biggest desire. Plus Vi's heart is being illuminated, showing how her tom-boy image is only on the outside and that she does have a "heart". Maybe Deadeye takes what each of these champions desire therefor destroying them from the inside.

kaltenashes1/1/2016, 8:00:13 PM2 votes

this deadeye seems to me like a prophet, maybe he traded/lost his vision (blind) to be able to see the inner truth in each and every person, these image might be about their wishes/fears plus jhin sounds like dhjin which is a genie

my point of view, prob all wrong, but i'll stick with it
