Why are mages such bad people?

Imagine trying to demolish a nation that doesn't want you because they didn't want you instead of taking your freedom and leaving with it?

Why are mages the most awful people in almost every significant lore encounter in League? Behind every major catastrophe or ominous event is a mage.

Ahri Brand Cassiopeia Elise Karthus Leblanc Lissandra Lulu Lux Malzahar Morgana Ryze Swain Syndra TwistedFate Veigar Vladimir Xerath Zoe Zyra

Demacia is absolutely in the right and Sylas deserves death.

Isn't Ryze literally trying to save Runeterra from certain destruction?

Wind2341/8/2019, 6:53:32 PM4 votes

So....we're just gonna ignore the fact that, in Sylas's short story, Vannis is willing to burn down AN ENTIRE VILLAGE just to find one person? And that he was willing to KILL A LITTLE GIRL completely unprompted? And yeah, it's sad that the other guy died, but they wouldn't have been in that situation if they weren't trying to commit a genocide in the first place.

You're casting the net pretty wide for what's considered "heinous and unforgivable." And you're grossly oversimplifying things. If the stories in Demacia should be sending any message, it's that willful ignorance and bias lead to horrible, horrible things happening. At this point, Demacia is little better than WWII Germany.

Yeah I don’t think they let mages leave.

So, what major catastrophes was Lulu or Lux a part of, exactly?

And, I'm hesitant to count Swain and Ryze as "awful people" since they're doing what's necessary. Yeah, sure, Swain can be seen as an asshole for sending soldiers to what amounts to their death in The Black Powder Plot, and yeah, Ryze left a Freljordian tribe for dead after killing their leader and stealing the World Rune that kept the trolls at bay in An Old Friend,

But we also have to take into account that Swain is playing 4-D Hypercheckers and pushing things into place so that Noxus can survive some great calamity on the horizon, and Ryze is trying to prevent a second Rune War from breaking out, so it kinda has to be asked, is Swain's brutal efficiency wrong if in the end it leads to the survival of Noxus - and perhaps more? And, for Ryze, the age-old question pops up - do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?

I could debate about a few others, but those are the four that I'm really not sure belong on the list.

Old, arcane magic corrupts.

That's why it's old. People figured it out long ago.

Kinda like drinking radium water for health, or drinking morphine syrup for a cough. We did this once upon a time, but most of us realize it's not really good for you.

Most of these got fked over and somewhat became mad. But some of the listed are just okay people.

Let's see here...

Ahri at least WANTS to not kill people

There's no indication Cass had magic before she got bitten by a statue, and there's not really anything to state she's used her newfound powers for evil; on the contrary, she has used them to take out at least one serial killer.

Lulu has no canon lore.

Lux? Okay, I guess she was involved in Sylas's escape, but she hasn't done anything bad herself, certainly not intentionally.

Morgana has no canon lore.

Ryze? The fuck? Ok, I guess there was that one tribe, but greater good and whatnot. Sometimes you have to choose between bad and worse.

I can't condone imperialism, but Swain at least thinks he's doing the right thing by uniting the world in preparation to fight a greater threat.

Syndra and Sylas are victims of circumstance. I can't really fault them for being humans and therefore emotional, especially after years of imprisonment and facing certain death.

TF is a scoundrel and thief, no doubt, but he's nowhere near as bad as Brand or Malz.

Veigar has done nothing wrong, ever. Hell, like Cass, he kills evil people.

Zyra isn't really something you can apply such a human concept as morality to.

Confirmation bias probably.

Everyone is capable of doing harm and if you try and quantify it you will find that normal people have probably done the most harm, more than mages anyways as there are probably more of them on Runeterra. It's just with magic you suddenly have the means to act on your desires and that people can highlight it as the "key difference" that makes you evil. A by-product of non-nuanced thinking. All humans have the capacity to do evil, the real question is what evil will our consciousness rest on or what evil will stick out the most?

"Demacia is absolutely in the right and Sylas deserves death." Is easier for the masses to unpack because it's not a nuanced thought and it is SCALABLE to an entire population. It tells you what to think and is extremely binary to the point even a child will know how to react in a given situation

The actual truth which is more like: "Demacia is in the position it is due to such and such social factors that played into this and that and it's really not that simple to fix" Is a terrible idea to feed because of the opposite reason. It's messy. Too much room for interpretation. Nobody will mobilize or produce results or know how to react based on that.

It's why Trumps' president, why Hitler got nation to sign off on genocide. Group-think. Simplicity in ideas. Binary. Safe. Not confusing

Also a ton of the mages you listed are good people which is kinda weird

Well excuse me but sheLissandra is trying her best to unite all the tribes in peace so there would be no war XD Ashe is just trying to copy her so she is actually the good guy and shouldnt be on your evil list lmao

because magic users in general are more powerful characters and generally more likely to be a villain, also how is ryze a villain? hes like basically the protagonist champion of the game imo

Modl Ryden l1/8/2019, 7:39:28 PM1 votes

Have you seen mage mains post in the boards?

They always demand something and when you give something they want they keep demanding more. Not a good characteristic to have IMO.

DrCyanide1/8/2019, 6:25:58 PM1 votes

taking your freedom and leaving with it?

That's what Xerath did. Do you really want more mages to take their freedom and leave with it when that's the example?
