Evelynn splash analysis
So as many people are already discussing, a presumably new splash art for the Evelynn rework was posted today. https://i.imgur.com/0MlcJsa.png Hopefully that's a side by side comparison of the two. Now these two splashes are both visually similar and yet convey drastically different themes. I thought I'd dig into those similarities and differences a bit here.
First of all, the similarities. Both have very similar color themes, predominantly blue with pink to emphasize the primary figure. The compositions are also similar, the primary figure is placed on the right side of the image roughly in line with the rule of thirds. She sits astride a victim figure that is mostly obscured along the bottom of the image and ribbons / tendrils arc out to the left and right of the figure. Both figures have highly sexual elements to their pose and design. Both images are set in a dark environment with moonlight streaming in from the left of the background. I think it's very clear that the artist attempted to borrow from the composition of the current splash art heavily for the updated design.
Now, what is different? In short, current Evelynn is portrayed as savage and dangerous while updated Evelynn is portrayed as devious, seductive, and malicious.
Current Evelynn is attacking an armored target head on in the outdoors. She is completely focused on her victim, slashing at his throat with her clawed hands. The violence of the attack is captured by the splashes of fluid coming from the neck of the victim and the flailing of the ribbons attached to her arms. Her face is triumphant and gleeful and fully revealed by her pulled back hair. Her body stance is wide and open conveying her power and confidence. This Evelynn is a killer before anything else.
Updated Evelynn is, on the other hand, is performing her attack indoors and from behind. Also, the spilled goblet implies the consumption of wine making her unarmored target even more vulnerable. She lacks the savagery of current Evelynn, instead she is methodically driving her crystalline blade into the shoulder of her victim while pinning him down to hinder his struggles. This is not a lethal point to attack. She is attacking to cause pain, not to kill. She is also not focused on her victim but rather the figures in the background who have entered the scene, particularly the queen figure who is in clear shock at the sight before her. Evelynn's face is contemptuous and smug, she is enjoying the pain of her victim's wife as well. It's also worth noting that this redesign of Evelynn's face is greatly obscured by her hairstyle, implying she uses it to hide or to obscure her intentions. There is no violent action conveyed in this updated image, besides some small struggling or breathing the whole scene is very static. Evelynn's pose is very closed and demure. This Evelynn is a malevolent seductress before anything else.
