“Is she dead?” asked Rafen, rubbing his bruised chest.

Illaoi reached up and slapped him.

Then started snoring like a stevedore with lung-blight.

My favourite line. I'm so hyped for Illaoi!

“Don’t you die on me, Rafen!” she wheezed.

“It’ll take more than the dead to kill me,” he grunted. “Bastard thing just winded me.”

Im sure that Rafen is the father of Helmet Bro.

Oh Olaf, death was not yet ready for your grace.

Kindred: Can I chase him Lamb? Kindred: No Wolf, you'd never stop.

This is how if feel Olaf's Death Ballad would go:

Bye, bye my Freljordian sky Drove my ax into the foul beast but the foul beast was spry And them good ole boys will praise my death by and by Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die

Lucian was like... http://i3.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/006/815/inigo-thumb-375xauto-2548.jpg You killed my wife. Prepare to die.

Anyway, still kinda disappointed with the way the conflict was depicted. :/ Both Lucian and Thresh need better fleshed out characters. At least Illaoi hooked me in. :P

and...Olaf proves to be the biggest badass in the story yet again in only about 15 lines of text.

Damn Sharjo I literally just checked and it wasn't up, how do you do these so fast?

Anyway, spoilers of course, the ending was pretty good! The most important thing is that RAFEN LIVES, but it had a lot of nice touches and memorable moments. I will say that I wish they made it a little more clear that Thresh didn't die when Lucian knocked him off the bridge. I thought he did (Or as close to "die" as Thresh can get), but Lucian later mentions he's still after revenge and trying to save Senna's soul from him, so I guess it takes more than that to finish off the Chain Warden for good.

It's interesting to see that Miss Fortune still thinks she's always the good guy here, though._ “Then I’ll say farewell and good hunting,” she said, standing and dusting her britches. “I hope you find what you’re looking for. Just know that you can lose yourself to revenge.”_

The person who blew up an entire ship to kill one man and has been hunting down anyone he worked with, and very much enjoying killing them, if we're going by her short story on the champ page, probably knows a bit more than she thinks about "losing herself to revenge".

I'm very glad MF wasn't restricted to her guns. I tend to worry that champions are restricted to their in game weapons for stories.

Kinda sad that Gangplank was nowhere to be seen, but I guess he has more important things to attend to. Also, Olaf for best character.

Olaf, just frigging Olaf, I would like to see him and Lucian team up and go to the Shadow Isles, Olaf would go because Death is the key of the Shadow Isles, and Lucian so he can free Senna.

Was anyone else a bit annoyed by Lucian and his interaction with Senna this chapter? I mean, he and Senna were both hardened members, some of the few members left, of their order. They fought with each other side by side, and not only does Lucian buckle with the simplest of possible prodding by Thresh, but then we see Senna call out to him as he's overcome and at his final moments, beautiful and gentle, reach out to support him and shelter him.

That...that actually felt kind of tropey and ill-fitting to me. I mean again, Senna fought the undead, facing "terror that would break most warriors" for years by Lucian's side. We know from the lore that she was filled with unwavering dedication to the order and him with warmth, and she just saw him give up the fight over what's actively and continuously happening _ to her_. I honestly expected Senna to say something more along the lines of, "Lucian! Never surrender to the darkness! Pull yourself together and fight!" Instead of, "Lucian...my love...let me be your shield." I mean there's a strong angle there for her to evoke her eternal dedication to their order and them here and again fighting side by side, but it's left by the wayside in favor of what feels like a generic representation of a damsel supporting the hero with her heart. The trope itself is not bad, but I don't understand why you'd go that route with these characters when they, by virtue of their lore, already have a stronger angle present.

Similarly, both Miss Fortune and Lucian have an identical arc. We have these champions who go in and fight, they get beaten down, and then external forces come up and bail them out just on time, giving them the opportunity to get in a decisive hit in the end so they can claim victory. It's not a bad story device, but it undercuts their own prowess as champions. I got the feeling, rather, that they were characters on their way to becoming champions and this was part of that arc, the beginnings of their legends. The only character I felt was already a force, fully a champion already in their own right and not on their way to become one was Olaf.

And then Lucian seemed to reverse any potential for growth he showed. At the beginning he was so focused on his loss and his pain that it nearly undid him in battle. At the end he's so focused on his loss and personal pain that he ignores the good he could do in Bilgewater, good in line with his order, considering The Harrowing comes for it every year. We have that point in the middle where it seems like he might pull himself together and take steps to become something more, but, sadly, all we got was Senna being the shield that allowed him to continue on as he was without change.

All in all, it was enjoyable if I imagined it as the start of something and ignored all the lore, the new lore, that already had things in a position to be beyond their beginnings. I'm cautiously interested to see what comes next.

I was expecting some epiclong fight between Olaf and Morde with the first being saved from his epic death (again) by the light or a taunting retreat of Mordekaiser.

Should I keep my hopes high for some candy things between tomorrow and sunday or just shrug it off?

Peridition10/30/2015, 5:46:44 PM3 votes

Great story. I am excited for Illaoi. And the story between Thresh and Lucian was fantastic.

I wonder if there will be an epilogue like there was with the Burning Tides or if Illaoi's champion lore will pick up from this point. I'd really love to know what Gangplank is doing.

banthor1110/31/2015, 9:12:50 AM2 votes

Curious where Mordekaiser was in all of this since I believe he was mentioned as one of the shadows seen in the approaching Black Mist. Also, I'll never stop asking where Nautilus was in all of this either after tanking one of the previous Harrowings.

I'd like to believe they were off fighting each other on the beach or a small off-coast Island nearby and it looked like a really terrible version of Rock'em-Sock'em Robots.

"Senna Didn't Die" You know what this means?
