Love the new Volibear appearance. Now Hype for VGU is even stronger. That's has the same Hype effect like description of Panth.
And love this mild Kindred mention.
Edit: Also tickets to The Olgavanna Hype Train is now for sale!
Ornn is so hot he can melt true ice.
Also: THERE ARE MORE ICEBORN AROUND THAN WE REALIZED.
Always gotta love that "new" Kindred lore, no matter how small.
Oh, also, was the storm bear that had spears and swords and tusks stuck in its hide Volibear, or was it Volibear's equivalent of Ornn's ult?
So I know we haven't seen Volibear's side of the story yet, and this could be Viktor vs. Jayce 2.0, but I don't blame people for worrying that Volibear might be getting a less sympathetic change in personality like Vayne and Xerath.
Hey someone who tells the other gods to fuck off and stop messing with humans. I'm all for that.
But overall, I felt the lost tales of Ornn was better. This background basically just told the same stories but with a more generic and cliched method of imparting the information. "No mortals could comprehend"? Bear dude wanted armor. Ram dude said no. It doesn't really take much to comprehend that. Which is usually the case with those sort of statements. Unless your character is entirely alien to the point they no longer follow logic or emotional responses then people will be able to comprehend it just fine.
does the rite of lamb mean that they killed their elders? Cause thats what it sounds like.
Something that confused me and is making me struggle to better understand this is that this entire thing ties in the Volibear rework and re-imagines a lot of the 2011 (?) Freljord rework.
I think the Freljord is one of (if not the most) interesting regions in League because it has an ongoing Civil War. There's Avarosa, Frost Guard, and Winter's Claw. Champions are part of different factions. Volibears old lore says he was an Ursine chieftain who joined the Winter's Claw for reasons. Now it seems Volibear is a Demigod who aligned himself with the Winter's Claw tribe? At least, my understanding of the Ursine/Volibear were part of Sejuani's faction.
This made this line read pretty weird:
We could only ever stand a chance against the Winter’s Claw. If the Ursine struck first, our defense would be terrifyingly short. That hideous legion of half-bear abominations would overwhelm us.
Because if you read it knowing the old lore, you'd be wondering why they'd only stand a chance against the Winter's Claw when the Ursine are considered part of the Winter's Claw. I was wondering if they renamed the Winter's Claw as the Ursine Faction and Sejuani was getting a different tribe name at first. Now it seems there's some kind of half-bear-man alliance with a human tribe. It's not a bad idea. It's cool actually. I just think the story didn't do enough to emphasize they're separate but coordinated armies.
Other than that, the story follows typical Riot Narrative patterns of 'everyone that is pretty much everyone of no consequence going to die'-sort of ending except this implies the people either fought to the death or somehow fought to survive against impossible odds. I think the universe building suffers a lot from this - there's simply just never any secondary characters of any consequence and those that are introduced (like MF's first mate Rafen) are shown to be incompetent.
Reading through the lore I'm kinda curious what's league definition of god, demgods are. Why is Ornn seen as a demigod when he's feats cold fully made hin define as a god.
So the other day two very similar but with opposing perspectives threads came out. Both of the seperate discussions were about the lore shift in Volibear, with the one here on SA&S being more optimistic about Voli's future LU while the one over at GA GD was much less so.
Checking most recently it seems that based on upvotes alone the optimistic people are the minority with half the number of votes (70 to 30). So, is the new direction a bad shift in the Storm Bear's character? To steal from another commenter: is this the new "Mah Viktor is not a villian!" ?
Edit: As someone who's on the fence but prefers the new approach only because I never really cared for his old lore, this debate from players has me very curious.
