#The Shackles of Belief We just got a new story and I can tell you it is more than surprising. There is quite a few twists in there with some interesting hints being made. Here is the link for everyone to read: https://universe.leagueoflegends.com/en_us/story/shackles-of-belief/ https://i.imgur.com/CxcdL5v.jpg[]

Story Let's talk story! Sylas is desperate and out of ideas as to how to conquer Demacia by himself so he and his mages decide to venture north and look for "great and terrible sorcery" to help him in his fight. Well if he was looking True Ice he definitely found it. Vrynna, who you may remember from the LoR cards, and Thorva a shaman were on a mission when they saw a figure and the figure happened to be Sylas. As they saw him he fell to the ground, he was alone since all the other mages died from cold or from the wild beasts killing them.. Sylas had a severe case of frostbite but when he fell to the ground he managed to absord Thorva's immunity from cold and render her ineffective in the process. Vrynna and the other Iceborn gathered around Sylas with Brokvar who is a great iceborn warrior with a legendary weapon of true ice. In any case Sylas and Brokvar fought each other when Sylas grasped at the true ice sword and the cold was about to kill him as it spread to his heart but Brokvar stepped too close when he picked the weapon up again and Sylas grabbed him and absorbed the power of true ice from him instead of touching the sword directly. As he now temporarily became an iceborn, he was able to create a barrier of ice so Vrynna did not manage to kill him. Thorva stepped in and said that the old gods wished for him to live and then she talked to sylas because she is able to speak demacian. While she was speaking to him she translated what he said into lies to deceive Vrynna that he was an ally. He proposed attacking demacia together and then they ventured off back into the Winter's Claw hideout.

Thoughts and Questions The writing was stunning and I liked the turbulence of the story as I was able to really imagine how things went down. I do have questions tho, why did the shaman lie? She said to Vrynna that the old gods wished for him to live but then later on she lied to Vrynna about what he said because she finds Sylas attractive (No wonder Lissandra wants to kill shamans when they're that dumb and easily deceived :')). Another weird thing is, Winter's Claw still praise the Three Sisters... I thought that was not the case anymore but if it is, it makes me wonder if there is still frostguard priests around their sites.

“The Three!” breathed Brokvar in reverence. “He speaks of Avarosa, Serylda, and Lissandra!” The other Winter’s Claw warriors murmured in surprise and awe, many of them touching holy totems hanging around their necks.

A very interesting thing to note here is that any mage is in danger right now. Sylas can literally suck peoples magic up and render them useless, the question is tho, will they remain magic-less permanently or temporarily?..

In any case, I think that letting Sylas infiltrate Freljord was very foolish of them, Vrynna was right to distrust him. This also shows how much of a problem freljordians are who are not under Lissandra's immeditate control and oversight. No wonder she wants to kill them when they invite the enemy right into their home. I believe that the Winter's Claw will help Sylas but there will be a moment where Sylas will use that against them and it that case we can at least hope that Sejuani dies, so there is one positive in all of this.

i think thorva lied because she believed the gods wanted him to survive. she just made sure that vrynna wont kill him by telling he dreamed fo the 3. and not only because he is a cutie :3*[sg-lux]*

I liked the story. It also shows that Sylas may truly act to liberate his people but he also really, really likes the power he gains from hijacking magic from others.

-Why she lied

Thorna absolutely believes that the gods want Sylas alive. She also knows that Vrynna's warriors are superstitious. She lied to preserve Sylas' life, because there's no way for him to know about the sisters. So the "fact" that he saw them in a dream tells them that he was led here by the gods. Speaking of which...

-The Three Sisters

While the Winter's Claw are not worshippers of the Sisters in the way that the Avarosans are, they still hold the three in reverence. They're old figures, and anyone in the Freljord will know their names and know them as heroes. It's a place of myth more than reality, and names like theirs have a lot of weight. Hence why Ashe is using Avarosa's name to recruit.

-Permanence of magic drain

Sylas' magic drain is temporary, and limited by touch. Else Lux would no longer be a mage. It's possible that Lux regained her power because of all the petricite in Demacia, but that seems a stretch imo.

-Sylas, enemy of the Freljord?

I wouldn't say that Sylas is an enemy of the Freljord or the Winter's Claw. While he's definitely driven by the singular goal of crushing Demacia, we don't know his opinions on other powers in Runeterra. His interactions suggest that he hates Noxus as much as Demacia (IIRC), for example. He's primarily after their magic, but he could still prove a staunch ally (if a self-centered one).

The mage rebellion allying with the Winter's Claw is definitely an interesting development regardless... hmmm...

Maybe I'm just a shipper at heart but I love that Sylas now has an ice queen to melt :P This entire story was great.

Thorva appraised him, giving him a look from head to toe. He was handsome for a southerner. A little lean for her tastes, but he was clever, and there was power in him.

She leveled a finger at him.

“But never touch me again,” she warned.

The outsider smiled wryly.

“Not without your permission,” he replied, and Thorva turned away so he did not see her smile.

all the Sylas X Lux shippers gonna be maaaaaaaaaaad overall though a good story

He proposed attacking demacia together and then they ventured off back into the Winter's Claw hideout.

Small nitpick-y correction, they went to raid Avarosan territory for Sylas to prove his worth.

“Fight with us. Prove to the mother of scars your worth,” she said. “Fight strong and you may live to have your alliance.”

Sylas is an idiot. I mean really. It's a weird thing, I like how he's written. A bumbling fool who's own ambition is so driven by one goal that he doesn't actually get the world around him. But I hate how he's made out to some great character and a big leader when anyone following this fool should be killed like he should.

He has prime role in how Demacia works, redefining Lux, J4 and Garen, multiple stories flung upon him and he's just not likeable. I like Magneto as he is a complex villain of years of character progression but even then he had charisma, charm and poise, Sylas doesn't have any, he's a lucky lieing idiot.

EDIT: How the Freljord folk were written was great though. More of them, less of Sylas please.

I liked the story. But if he touched Ashe I'm rioting.

DOES THIS MEAN WE GETTING A FRELJORD Sylas SKIN?

Gods damn it Freljord people stop giving magical All for One for more powers before he kills us all! But at least Sylas hasn't found Ryze's world rune tree.

I wonder if there's any magic in particular that Sylas is looking for. His journey to the far north would suggest that he wants the power of Dark Ice, but the power is also described as "primal" which could mean he is in search of a demigod. I wonder if he would actually survive absorbing the power of Ornn or Volibear, and whether the gods would actually temporarily lose their magical properties. He could also be going north of Frejlord as hinted by the LoR cards with They Who Wander/She Who Watches. I wouldn't be surprised if these massive creatures were also primal and godlike.

I dislike the story for the simple reason that Sylas' venture to the north feels like defeat to him. So far demacia seems to have a record of somehow being unbeatable and this event just stirrs that rough assumption more towards being true, and I honestly dislike it. Sure, Sylas got further than any noxian ever did, starting a civil war and getting the king killed and forcing lux to reveal herself as a magician, but I don't think he should have had to retreat gen north to begin with.

Althoe, if the changes start bringing him devastating victories, why not? It would certainly create a build up towards a climatic finale if Sylas begins to seriously win against Demacia thanks to the Freljordians, forcing them towards the south when they aren't really united yet. It would push Ashe and the Avarosians in a place of diplomatic dispute with Demacia as well as force her hand for good against Sejuani and Lissandra, which means that this event just might finalize Ashe's arc and whether or not Freljord will truly be united or not. Furthermore, it might actually cause Ashe to side with Demacia to stop the Winter's Claw, which might change her view on the southerners and loosen her up to peace negociations.

Overall I see this as a massive potential for the final development for all of Freljord.

Whether that was intended or not will be a different question entirely.

Would Riot be bold enough to have Sylas kill Sejuani? It'd be an interesting move. I'm still not sure if Riot is ready to kill a champion yet.

I loved that they include characters from LoR and this opens up tons of opportunities (that are probably already in the works) for more characters to become important to the lore.

What struck me most about the story was the establishment of different languages even moreso than we already knew. Maybe there are stories I haven't read before where this was the case, but I don't recall any where there were translators and clear obvious different languages. The most I recall is mentions of the Shurima language.

I am very glad to see Riot moving forward with stories in the timeline. I just hope they move on to other factions and areas too since we've had a lot of Demacia/Freljord focus for a long time now.
