Superbeings vs normal people.
For many this will be a complete non issue, nonetheless I think it's an interesting topic to discuss the fantasy of superbeings that fight against just gifted, normal people. I know lore is disconnected from gameplay and that “normal“ is pretty relative in LoL.
However, I always found that LoL's fantasy never completely felt right when you think about gods, giants, space dragons and so on fighting against gifted, but in comparison puny, soldiers, adventurers, ninjas...etc.
Something about the idea of for example Draven throwing his axes at a being which could wipe out cities with a simple gesture just never sat right.
I always liked how fighting these superbeings felt like in the souls series. Where an essentially weak undead has to fight against beings with the power to shape new dimensions or alter entire landscapes and so on. And the game does a good job of letting you know that the odds are heavily stacked against you. Yet in the end the undead beats them all. Sure the undead is immortal in a way and gets strength from enemy souls, but nonetheless the idea is there that even a weak being can topple gods. Not through matching power, but by channeling what power there is for a singular purpose with absolute clarity (not for broadly influencing the world like a god would do for example, but on a much smaller scale for destroying whatever entity gets in the way).
Personally I think there is also something about superbeings, when not the antagonist or deus ex machina mechanic, that just doesn't make for the best fantasy. Take for example Marvel and DC superhero stories. On one side you have these god like beings like Superman or Thor which make for great stories about saving the planet, sharing a world of wonder on a grand scale. While these stories are awesome, the scale on which they operate are often just too huge for immersion. My favourites will always be on the other side of the coin, the more street level heroes like Daredevil or Batman. The scale they take is much smaller and often takes a much more personal route with a darker setting (although there are a lot of exceptions). That's because the issues they face have a much more raw nature. There is no magical hammer flying in to save the day, there are no planet-destroying/saving superpowers which come and go as the story demands. No, they have their fists and smarts and often have to face the limits of their power. The fight they fight is in many ways much more gruesome and risky, with death only being a bullet away.
The champions of LoL feel very similar in that regard and I wonder sometimes if Riot hasn't taken into just a tad too far with some of the godly beings in the roster.
I guess I kinda jumped from topic to topic there, bit I'd like to hear your thoughts about this and a broad theme makes for a more vivid discussion from time to time.
Are really fun for me and I would love to see more champion designs like that in the future. Not everyone has to have magical powers able to change the nation or being an immortal spirit that is on the earth for centuries.
will never fight
and
, these 3 champions can all are human champs that can kill an Ascended/ Aspect, because they wield Ascended weapons. However, this fact does not make the fight a fair one, it simply means it is possible for them to win, and this is all that's necessary for a story. Often unless the odds are 50-50 people will complain about the outcome, but this is not how probability works.
because they are a healer or messenger and not a fighter. Even in the case of some fighters, just because you have powerful characters does not mean their presence will be the focal point of the story.
