Argh! Why did the writers do Morgana so dirty like that in the immortal journey line?!
So, the surrenderAt20 has the following text for the 3 new immortal journey skins:
Skin bios for some of this cycle's skins were added: Splendid Staff Nami: "When the demigoddess Irelia was bested by a heavenly empress, the seal over Talon's draconic power began to weaken... allowing some of his magic to leak into the world. Once a mere fish who dreamed of being a dragon, Nami has received some of this power, and has found her true form beginning to awaken." Valiant Sword Riven: "Riven trained with Morgana in the arts of politics and war for many years, but where Riven walked the path of justice, Morgana envisioned a world ruled by the gods alone-- ultimately defeating their master and assuming the title of empress. Now tasked with bringing her friend to heel, Riven must face Morgana in combat... or join her." Majestic Empress Morgana: "A feared sorceress queen from the heavenly kingdoms, Morgana looked on with disdain as Irelia sealed away the power of a dragon. Crushing her in combat, Morgana soon realized the young demigoddess had hidden that power away, and now ruthlessly searches for a way to return it to its rightful owner."
All I have to say is:
ARGH.
In many instances, characters with multiple skins often retain who they are throughout their skin bios, even as particular circumstances around the plot change. For instance, base Jinx is a Zaunite rebel that loves blowing things up. And in Odyssey and Star Guardian, even though instead of a criminal, she's squarely a good girl, she still retains her, well Jinx-iness--her rebellious nature, her shoot first, ask questions later carefree attitude that makes her so lovable as a character. Heck, even in her dark PROJECT incarnation, Jinx still retains that unpredictable and crazy aspect of her personality (whereas most of her other skins take her playful and rebellious aspects).
Another example: Kai'sa. Say what you will about her being a one-dimensional character, but throughout all her skins, she retains her forthright sense of kindness and justice. Bullet Angel steals a suit that's too dangerous for the Royal Space Military to retain, Arcade Kai'sa is obviously on the good guy side, and K/DA Kai'sa is the team's big sister; she made Akali's mask, and cooks the meals for the other 3.
Heck, let's even take Evelynn. Sure, in her other skins, she's no longer a demon hellbent on just wantonly murdering people, but she still keeps that alluring aspect of her personality in her K/DA skin.
And obviously, Irelia just retains her goodness-above-all-else theme (sometimes to her own detriment with nightblade) in all her skins (maaaaybe infiltrator is the exception? But that skin seems to be a direct shoutout to Catwoman and Black Cat--both notable heroines, at least some of the time, in their respective universes).
But Morgana? Her base personality is "I love humans; I think they should be given chances to pick themselves up, even if they screwed up in the past." She willingly binds her wings to live among them, is far more empathetic than Kayle, and despite looking somewhat goth-y and having dark powers, is still this absolutely wholesome ball of preciousness.
Meanwhile, Majestic Empress Morgana? Apparently a godlike being that let the power go waaaaaaay to her head, beats the crap out of Irelia for getting Talon to go on a journey for self-improvement/humility, and thinks that gods should rule over humans, even to the point that Riven might have to face her in combat. Suddenly, instead of the immortal journey line being a case of "good vs. good" and conflict between genuinely reasonable people arising from slight misunderstandings, instead, we have Morgana going on such a power trip that she's basically certainly cast as the antagonist, if not outright tyrannical and despotic.
Oh, one other thing--on Riven's bio--two friends training together in the same technique under a master, one goes off the deep end and defeats their master in their quest for power...hello...Gouki, is that you?
But in any case...this...personality she has of "beat the crap out of anyone first, ask questions never" just seems so completely antithetical to, well...every bit of who the new Morgana actually is. Like if base Morgana were to meet this Morgana, she'd be disgusted.
Riot...
Why did you have to do Morgana so dirty by throwing out her entire personality? I think a gentler approach could have been taken while still retaining all the elements of conflict without making Morgana into a power-hungry empress that could have evoked sympathy for all involved, rather than "well, I hope Riven and Irelia just smack Morgana straight, and then give her a harsh talking-to, so she comes to her senses."
Or, TL;DR:
Many sympathetic characters retain their base character's persona as a running theme throughout many of their skins--Jinx's playful, rebellious nature; Kai'sa or Irelia's goodness, Eve's alluring confidence, and so on. But this incarnation of Morgana throws out every shred of her base personality and turns her into a one-dimensional antagonist on a power trip who bears more in common with Gouki/Akuma than her own classic self. And that makes me sad and disappointed.
